WAR SERVICE RECORDS

Because of the difficulties and uncertainties of identifying soldiers who served in the Colonial and Revolutionary Wars, it has been deemed wise to omit such records from the genealogical statistics that constitute the body of this work. A few pages, however, at the end of each volume, will be devoted to war service records.

THE PEQUOT WAR

The Pequot War, fought in 1637, the year before New Haven was set- tled, was participated in by 130 Connecticut men of whom not more than 95 have been identified. The best authority on this subject is James Shep- ard's pamphlet entitled "Conn. Soldiers in the Pequot War," Meriden, 1913. The following veterans of the Pequot War later became proprietors of New Haven :-

1. HALL, JOHN (1610 ?- 1676); enlisted from Hartford; of New Haven, 1640; of Wallingford, 1670; m Jane Woolen; 7 children.

2. MERRIMAN, NATHANIEL (1614 ?- 1694); enlisted from (Wethersfield ?); of New Haven, 1640; of Wallingford, 1670; Sergeant of New Haven train band; Ensign of New Haven Artillery Company, 1662; Lieutenant (rank- ing officer) of Wallingford train band, 1672; Captain of Dragoons for New Haven County in King Philip's War, 1675; m Joan - ; 11 children.

3. MUNSON, THOMAS (1612-1685); enlisted from Hartford; of New Ha- ven, 1639; Sergeant New Haven train, 1642; Sergeant of New Haven Artil- lery Company, 1645; Ensign of train band, 1661, and Lieutenant of same, 1665; member of Conn. Council of War, 1673 (trouble with the Dutch); served in King Philip's War, 1675; Capt. of New Haven County troops, 1676; m Joanna - ; 3 children.

4. PATTERSON, EDWARD (1615 ?- 1670); enlisted from Windsor; an origi- nal proprietor of New Haven, 1639; m - ; 2 children.

5. TURNER, NATHANIEL ( -1646); of Lynn, Mass., 1630, where he was Constable, 1634; enlisted from Lynn; an original proprietor of New Ha- ven, 1639; Captain (ranking officer) of New Haven train band, 1640; m ; 6 children.

6. WHITEHEAD, SAMUEL (1613 ?- 1690); of Cambridge, Mass., 1634; an original proprietor of Hartford; enlisted from Hartford; an original pro- prietor of New Haven 1639; Corporal of New Haven train band 1642; Ser- geant of New Haven Colony troops raised to go against the Dutch, 1654; m (1) - ; no issue; m (2) Sarah Gregson, widow of John Gilbert; 2 children.

KING PHILIP'S WAR

King Philip's War, which broke out in 1675, was the most distressing of all the Colonial wars. Several hundred Connecticut men served during the course of the war. A winter campaign was waged, and the Conn. troops were in the thick of the Great Swamp Fight, which practically won the war, although desultory attacks and fighting occurred for a long time thereafter.

(1) NEW HAVEN SOLDIERS

In 1680, the third division of New Haven land was laid out, the ap- portionment being determined by three considerations: (1) number of heads in family; (2) amount of taxable estate; and (3) service in the late war. A careful analysis of the apportionment shows that 4 acres were al- lowed for each member of the proprietor's family, and 1 acre for each £5. of taxable estate, with the exception that a minimum of 20 acres was al- lowed to each original proprietor. Any surplusage of acreage, therefore, must be attributed to war sevice; the total of such surplusage comes to about 200 acres, and the record states that 200 acres were set aside for soldiers, thus checking the accuracy of our calculation. The number of acres allowed to each soldier depended upon length of service.

The following list has been prepared with the greatest care, and in- cludes all who received an acreage in excess of the normal allotment, with two exceptions. "Widdow Andrews" and her son Timothy Gibbard re- ceived their allotment together, and the same is true of Jonathan and Mark Fowler. In both cases, an excess acreage is apparent, probably due to war service. Excess allotments of less than one acre are also omit- ted, since they may have been due to practical considerations in the divi- sion of the land.

1. ATWATER, JOHN (1654-1748), 7 acres excess; m (1) 1682 Abigail Mans- field, 10 children; m (2) Mary (-) Beach; no issue.

2. BASSETT, SAMUEL (1654-1716), 6 acres excess; m 1677 Mary Dicker- man, 10 children.

3. BETTS, ROGER (1652- ), called a soldier and was permitted 4 acres although not a formally admitted inhabitant; apparently belonged in Branford, his birth-place.

4. BROWN, SAMUEL (1645-1691), 3 acres excess; m 1667 Mercy Tuttle, 5 children.

5. HANCOCK, JOHN (1645-1712), 6 acres excess; died unmarried.

6. HILL, JOHN (1650-1710), 5 acres excess; m (1) 1681 Hannah Grannis, 6 children; nı (2) 1693 Hannah - , 4 children; m (3) 1703 Mary (Mans- field) (Wise) Turhand, no issue.

7. HOTCHKISS, JOSHUA (1651-1722), 6 acres excess; m (1) 1677 Mary Par- dee, 3 children; m (2) 1686 Hannah Tuttle, 8 children; m (3) 1719 Mary (Sanford) Ashburn, no issue. -

8. HOTCHKISS, SAMUEL (1645 ?- 1705), 4 acres excess; m (1) 1679 Sarah Talmadge, 6 children; m (2) Hannah (Thompson) Moulthrop, no issue.

9. How, JEREMIAH (1614-1691), 412 acres excess; m Elizabeth -; 9 children. This Jeremiah was old for active service, yet his son Jeremiah resided in Wallingford and cannot be intended; possibly the figures are in error.

10. HUGHES, NICHOLAS, called a soldier and was permitted 512 acres al- though not a formally admitted inhabitant; rem. to Stratford. .

11. HUMISTON, SAMUEL (1653-1691), 7 acres excess (if figured on heads and taxable estate) or 2 acres excess (if he was allowed a minimum of 20 acres as eldest son of an original, deceased, proprietor); m 1677 Hannah Johnson, 6 children.

12. JOHNSON, SAMUEL (1653- ), allowed 7 acres, although then un- married and with no estate, almost certainly for war service; m- , 4 children.

13. MANSFIELD, LIEUT. MOSES (1640-1703), 8 acres excess; mn (1) 1664 Mercy Glover, 9 children; m (2) Abigail Yale, no issue.

14. MERRIMAN, LIEUT. NATHANIEL (1614 ?- 1694), although not an in- habitant, was allowed 5 acres on his taxable New Haven estate, undoubt- edly for war servicc; see No. 2 under Pequot War.

15. MILES, SAMUEL (1640-1678); "Widdow Miles" received 6 acres ex- cess; m 1667 Hannah Wilmot, 5 children.

16. MIX, THOMAS (1628 ?- 1691), about 6 acres excess; m 1649 Rebecca Turner; 11 children. Because of his age and large family, we may suspect an error in the original figures.

17. MORRIS, ELEAZER (1648-c. 1723), allowed 7 acres, although then un- married and with but £6 estate (2 acres excess above head and estate), al- most certainly for war service; m 1681 Ann Osborn, 7 children.

18. MUNSON, LIEUT. THOMAS (1612-1685), 6 acres excess; see No. 3 un- der Pequot War.

19. PARDEE, JOHN (1653-1683), allowed 4 acres, although unmarried and with no estate, almost certainly for war service; died unmarried.

20. PRESTON, JOSEPH (1646-1733), allowed 4 acres, although then un- married and with no estatc, almost certainly for war service; m Joanna (Leek) Stevens, no issue.

21. ROSEWELL, RICHARD (1652-1702), allowed 4 acres, although then unmarried and with no estate, almost certainly for war service; m 1681 Lydia Trowbridge, 5 children.

22. SMITH, EBENEZER (1653-1714), allowed 4 acres, although then un- married and with no estate, almost certainly for war service; m Mary -, 8 children.

23. TALMADGE, THOMAS (1650-1733), 7 acres excess; m 1676/7 Elizabeth Alsop, 7 children.

24. TODD, JOHN (1642- ), 3 acres excess; m (1) 1668 Sarah Gilbert, who dicd 1672; a childless widower in 1675; m (2) 1677 Sarah Blackman, 7 children.

25. TUTTLE, JOHN (1657-c. 1723), 4 acres excess; in 1689 Mary Burroughs, 6 or more children; rem. to Lebanon.

26. TUTTLE, JOSEPH (1640-1690), 2 acres excess; m 1667 Hannah Mun- son, 9 children.

27. TUTTLE, NATHANIEL (1652-1721), called a soldier and allowed 2 acres; m 1682 Sarah How, 7 children; rem. to Woodbury.

28. WATSON, JOHN (1656-1714), 2 acres excess; m 1681 Elizabeth Hud- son, 5 children.

29. WINSTON, JOHN (1621-1697), 10 acres excess, quite probably an er- ror in the figures, since those with the longest service received but 6 to 8 acres excess; m Elizabeth , 7 children.

30. WOLCOTT, JOHN ( -1725), called a soldier and was permitted 534 acres although not a formally admitted inhabitant; m 1683 Sarah Johnson, 5 children.

31. YALE, NATHANIEL (1652-1730), allowed 714 acres, although then unmarried and with but £712 estate (2 acres excess above head and

241

estate), almost certainly for war service; m 1692 Ruth Bishop, 4 children.

32. YALE, THOMAS (1616-1683), 3 acres excess; m 1645 Mary Turner, 8 children. Perhaps there is here an error in the figures.

It is believed, on the basis of the record of this land grant and a care- ful analysis of the figures, that all of the above served in King Philip's War, with the possible exception of Nos. 9, 16, 29, and 32. Nevertheless, officers who were over 60 years old are known to have endured the hardships of the winter campaign, and it seemed fair to include these four doubtful cases to inake our analysis of the land grant complete.

In addition to the above, the following were perhaps soldiers, though the evidence is not so strong. David Atwater (1651-1736), Jonathan Atwat- er (1656-1726), and Samuel Bristol (1651-1692), sons of living proprietors, were allowed land in exact accord with their heads and estate; so also were John Humiston (1659 ?- 1696), Thomas Humiston 1656-1715), and David Tut- tle (1639-1693), sons of deceased proprietors, and Edward Keeley, who was an inhabitant, but not an early proprietor nor the son of a proprietor. Since none of these was allowed the minimum of 20 acres which was granted (irrespective of heads and estate) to early proprietors and their representa- tives, these allotments may have been for war service.

12. PRESTON, ELIASAPH (1643-1707), (B).

13. STREET, REV. SAMUEL (1635 ?- 1717), house fortified.

It seems probable that during the absence of Lieut. Merriman on active service, Ens. Munson became acting Lieut. of the train band and attended to the liome defense, while Sergt. Doolittle became acting Ensign. The ap- pointment of Munson as Ensign at just this time was doubtless so as not to leave the town without a commissioned officer in Merriman's absence. This view is confirmed by the fact that Doolittle is referred to as Ensign in a record of 1676, although not formally invested with that rank.
