ERRORS IN NEW HAVEN VITAL RECORDS
Errors in New Haven Vital Records.
A. ERRORS IN THE ORIGINAL RECORDS
Original vital entries should never be "corrected" unless they can be proved erroneous beyond the shadow of a doubt. There are unquestiona- bly a few mistakes made by careless clerks in the New Haven records, and the following corrections are made for the benefit of genealogists who might otherwise be inisled. For convenience, page references refer to the page of the recently published New Haven Vital Records, and not to the page of the original.
Page 231. Nathanael Tuttle and Mary Todd married 16 Jan 1737/8. Enos Tuttle Junr. and Mary Todd married 23 Apr 1741. The marriage rec- ords of these Tuttle brothers were probably entered at the same time, and the careless clerk gave the same bride to them both. Other records prove that the bride of Enos Tuttle was Martha Brockett.
Page 248. John Eliot and Lydia Daughter of Jeremiah Atwater married 22 Oct 1730. Lydia Atwater divorced her first husband, Alexander Wol- cott, in 1740, and married Eliot shortly after. The year 1730 is an error for 1740.
Page 271. Susanna daughter of Simon Tuttle born 15 Aug 1740. The el- der Simon was dead at this time, and the younger Simon only a boy. Other records prove that Susanna was daughter of Isaiah and grand- daughter of the elder Simon Tuttle.
Page 413. Samll Woodin Jr m Rachel Ford 16 Feb 1770. It was Samuel Cooper Jr. who m Rachel Ford, as numerous records attest. Saniuel Wooding Jr. m Elizabeth Punderson in 1767, had 3 children by her, and was killed in 1779; Elizabeth survived him and remarried.
Page 174. Baszel the son of John Munson Junr born 23 January 1729/30. Baszel was son, not of John Munson Jr., but of the latter's brother Joel. (See The New Eng. Hist. & Gen. Register, vol. 39, p. 384).
Page 264. ffrancis the son of Henry Tolles Junr born 30 Dec 1733, This child was actually a daughter Frances; she joined her brothers and sisters in a deed as wife of Josiah Scovill of Haddam, where her death is record- ed 2 Mar 1806 æ. 72.
Page 181. Dorothy daughter of Henry Tolles Junr born 17 Sep 1731.
Probably the name Dorothy is an error for the Deborah who m 3 Jan 1750 /1 Nathaniel Tolles, and died 4 Sep 1751 æ. 20 (gravestone). Henry Tolles had a later child named Deborah, b 27 July 1751, who however was not baptized until 25 Oct 1751, more than a month after (the first) Debo- rah died.
Page 283. Sarah daughter of Amos Peck born 30 Sep 1747. Sarah's (prob- ably twin) sister Mary was baptized with her; Mary m Stephen Good- year & died 29 Oct 1832 æ. 85 (gravestone). Her name is omitted from the birth record.
Page 213. Caleb Atwater and Abigail Bradley married 18 Dec 1729. Other records prove conclusively that it was Stephen Atwater, brother of Caleb, who m Abigail Bradley; Caleb m in 1727 Lydia Benham (page 210) & they had 11 children.
Page 407. Timo: Goodyear and Mary Ives married 29 May 1760. The
505

bride was Ruth, not Mary Ives, as proved by the church entry of identi- cal date and by other records.
B. ERRORS IN THE PRINTED COPY.
The vital records of New Haven, 1649-1850, have been published in two handsome volumes ($18.00) by the Connecticut Society of the Founders and Patriots of America. The copy was made and verified with the great- est care, and great pains were taken to ensure tlie accuracy of the printed version.
Some of the early clerks in New Haven who originally wrote these vi- tal records were careless in their writing, and at times a name will be found which it is impossible to decipher unless the expert reading it has an inti- mate knowledge of New Haven names and families to supply a clue to the correct reading. Because of this, a few errors, despite all precautions, have found their way into the printed version.
Noting a few misreadings in the first volume, I pointed them out to a member of the Publication Committee, and offered to verify my reading of these entries and send them to the Committee for insertion in the second volume. The second volume has recently appeared, and contains no cor- rections. I have verified my reading of such printed entries as I believed to be in error by consulting the original records again, and give below a list of corrections. In practically every case, my reading is substantiated by reference to other sources, such as churcli, land, and probate records.
The percentage of error in the printed volumes is very slight in com- parison with the magnitude of the work. These volumes are of great val- ne as reference books, and should be in every genealogical library.

BROCKETT. (Page 324). FAM. 1,7, vii & viii. The births of Benjamin & Josiah were not found by the compiler in Wallingford Vital records, but were so entered in the Brockett Genealogy. On reconsideration, it ap- pears that the birth-date assigned to Benjamin really belongs to his cousin Benjamin, s. of John, and the date of birth of this Benjamin is unknown. It is also probable that the date assigned to Josiah (viii) is a second and faulty reading of the birth of Josiah (v), and that the latter was father of FAM. 7.
