Surveys for these works were commenced Oct. 1858; ground broke June, 1854 and first pumping of water, Oct. 28, 1855. The engines and pumps were used in supplying water to the Garden Street Reservoir from the Connecticut river up to .Jan. 2, 1867, at 2 P. M., at which time water from West Hartford was substituted.


Pumps were started Oct. 8, 1891, 2.30 P.M., and run till Dec. 8th; they were also run Dec. 22d to the 80th inst., to supply a large part of the city, owing to the failure in the supply of the reservoirs. Its hourly ca- pacity is 154,000 gallons for delivering at reservoir, which is at an elevation of 125 feet above the river, and 1§ miles distant from it. The load upon the engine at low water, and with a full Reservoir, is 11,934 pounds.


The pier in the river, to protect the receiving pipe, is where at low water, there is 12 feet in depth, the water running into a well 140 feet from the river.


The ORIGINAL GARDEN STREET RESERVOIR, 97-175 Garden street, is connected by 6,879 feet of 16 inch iron pipe, with Pumps on Water st .; holds 8,600,000 gallons.

THE WEST HARTFORD RESERVOIR was completed and water furnished the city therefrom at 2 o'clock P. M., January 2d, 1867, at which time the pumps ceased working, and have been used since only occasionally.


The receipts from Water Rents collected for the year ending March 1, 1899, amounted to $240,811.09; from sale of pipe, etc., $55,918.82; cash on hand, March 1, 1898, $46,969.60; total receipts, $296,229.91. Disburse- ments as follows: Construction, $41,866.31; repairs, $18,710.86; current expenses, $41,281.02; interest on water bonds, $41,520.00; cash on hand, $152,851.72; total disbursements, $296,229 91.


Total consumption of water for the year ending March 1, 1869, when it was all measured at the pump- ing works, was 700,000,000 gallons. Under the direct distribution from the West Hartford reservoir during 1876 was 1,808,500,000 gallons, equal to 4,954,795 gal- lons per day. During the drought of 1879 the average daily supply from Sept. 22, 1879, to Jan. 28, 1880, pumped from the river, for use in the eastern part of the city, was 3,298,815 gallons, which shows an average daily supply to the city of 6,000,000 gallons; in 1898 the average daily supply was 9,345,056 gallons.


Reservoir No. 1 is five miles from City Hall, and at high water flows 82 acres. Its capacity of 84 feet in depth is 145,985,548 United States gallons. The alti- tude of the reservoir at top water above low water of Connecticut River is 260 feet, and gives a head at the City Hall of 185 feet over the old works.


Reservoir No. 2 is 12 miles beyond Reservoir No. 1, covering a water surface of 49 acres with 41 feet depth and capacity of 288,694,875 gallons. Forty acres of land was purchased in 1890 for additional water shed.


Reservoir No. 3, is located about one mile northwest- erly from Reservoir No. 1, and was completed October 80, 1875, with a capacity, when filled to depth of 86 feet, of 145,595,829 gallons, covering 25 42-100 acres at top water line. Total cost $59,117.78.


Reservoir No. 4, located in towns of New Britain and Farmington. It is 82 miles from the city by the south road. The reservoir overflows 160 of the 188 acres. The land cost $9,764.90; construction. $84,124.86. Its capacity of 20 feet in depth is 601,353,592 gallons.


Reservoir No. 5, on Mine Brook, about half a mile from No. 1, with a capacity 20 feet in depth of 94,132,- 000 gallons; constructed in 1884, at an expense of $18,549 and paid from receipts of water rents.


Reservoir No. 6 is located about 2 miles north of the first water shed, and covers about 109 acres, with a capacity 27 feet in depth of 765,115,175 gallons; it was completed Oct. 1, 1895, and cost $594,781.06.


Making a total supply of over 2,000,000,000 gallons in the six reservoirs.


Mountain Stream Canal has been thoroughly exca- vated, bringing a supply of water from three rivulets into Reservoir No. 2, constructed in 1883.


Brandy Brook Canal, 1} miles long, 16 feet deep, 12 feet wide at bottom, connecting Brandy Brook with Reservoir No. 4, constructed in 1888.


Total amount of cast iron pipe now in use is 115 miles and 1,609 feet; 9,021 service pipes; 1,240 stop gates; 809 public hydrants, and 580 water meters.


The total construction outlay since this water system. has been introduced, has been $3,127,807.18; bonded debt is $925,000.00.


From the commencement of these works in 1856 to March, 1899, the amount received for water rents has been $3,806,894.66. Paid for repairs and current ex- penses, $1,240,412.16; paid interest, $1,887,895.02.

The first organization was at Cambridge, Mass., in 1682; removed to Hartford with Rev. Thomas Hooker as Pastor and Rev. Samuel Stone as Teacher, in June, 1636.


The present edifice was erected in 1807; it is 114 feet in length by 79 in width. There are 150 slips on the lower floor, and 56 in the gallery, which will seat about 1200 persons. Spire is 185 feet in height. The conference room was occupied in 1832. In 1822 this church had the first organ in this city. Services 10.45 A. M. and 4 P. M.

The building is 96 feet in length by 63 feet in breadth, with a portico in front 42 by 12 feet, and a chapel in the rear 36 by 80 feet. The porch is 60 by 16 feet. The audience room is 60 by 77 feet, with galleries. Estimated to seat 1,100 persons.

ASYLUM HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.


PARK CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, (FORMERLY THE NORTH CHURCH,) 890 ASYLUM ST. Organized Sept. 28, 1824. This 2d edifice was dedicated March 29, 1867.


This building has sittings for about 1000 persons, with gallery for organ and choir, cost- ing with land $150,000. Dimensions inside are 115 feet long and 66 wide, height of nave 60 feet, chapel with other rooms in rear and con- nection therewith is 82 by 40 feet with 500 sit- tings. This edifice is of the early English ornamented style with true Gothic windows and doors, walls of brown Portland stone in blocks rough hewn. All of the ornamental portions are of the yellow Dorchester or com- monly called Nova Scotia stone. Services at 10.45 A. M., and 7.45 P. M. 300 members.

It is built of Portland stone; corner stone was laid May 5, 1865; the length of church and chapel is 184 feet; audience room of the church is 68 by 112 feet; 182 pews for 1,050 sittings. The chapel is 42 by 65 feet; seats 250. The spire is of stone, 230 feet in height. Services 10.45 A. M. Young People's meeting 6.30 P.M., and service of praise first Sunday of the month at 7.30 P.M.
