The Connecticut Retreat for the Insane was opened for the reception of patients, April 1, 1824. Since that period, 3135 have been received, of whom 1484 were male, and 1651 female. Of these, there have been 2926 discharged, of whoni 1536 have recovered, and 1066 were more or less improved. At this date, May 1st, 1857, there are 209 patients in the Institution. This is the full number the house ean accommodate. Valuable additions have lately been made to its conveniences, and oth- ers are now in progress, and two buildings, with all the modern improvements, have also been ereeted for Lodges. The Re- treat must depend chiefly for its means of usefulness, on the liberality of individuals who ean appreciate the high benevolent objects it aims to accomplish.
