PREFACE.

In presenting the accompanying compilation to the Public, its compiler and publisher, with pleasurable feelings, acknowledges the universal politeness of those citizens of Washington with whom he has come in contact in its preparation, and which was so essentially conducive to an agreeable performance of the duty he assumed.

For the portions of matter which it contains relative to the Gen- eral Government, he also tenders his acknowledgements to those connected with its several Departments for their courteous facilities of information, which he has so often witnessed heretofore when their official associate, but the full value of which can only be known to a recipient.

To those who purchase this book or advertise in it, he will say, that he hopes and believes that the means of information which it contains, and its extensive circulation, with the advantages thereby that will accrue to them, in the general diffusion of their business cards, will amply compensate them for their flattering custom.
