PREFACE

The seventeenth annual edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Jacksonville City Directory, herewith presented, is issued with the assurance that all the varied information desirable in a modern, first-class directory to a growing city is given with specific accuracy and that it is everything which the best skill in directory making has been able to produce.

The actual worth of the City Directory is becoming more and more gen- erally understood every year. Its value as a book of reference and as a guide to all the residences and business houses, streets, public buildings, churches, schools, banks, societies and organizations, and, in fact, all the institutions of the city, has always been recognized. As a history of the progress of the city and as an unequalled advertisement of its resources, the directory is growing in popular favor year by year.

The scope of this volume has in nowise been reduced and embraces all the features heretofore familiar to the directory user. The canvass has in- cluded all of "Greater Jacksonville" and even the more remote suburbs, such as Ortega, Murray Hill Heights, New Riverside, Moncrief, Panama, South Jacksonville, etc., for, while all of these places are not within the corporate limits, their residents are so closely identified with the industrial and busi- ness life of Jacksonville as to render their inclusion most desirable in a Di- rectory of the city.

The following interesting data has been prepared by Mr. George E. Leonard, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce:

Jacksonville is a city of beautiful homes. It is the metropolis of Flor- ida, and its streets and avenues compare favorably with those of any city of its size in America. It has the greatest hotel capacity of any commercial city of its size in the United States, a number of its hotels being of most modern construction, affording their guests all the comforts and luxuries of the large hotels of the big cities.

Eighteen miles from the city is the world's most beautiful ocean beach. It is connected with the city by a paved boulevard and electric railway con- nections, which make it very accessible. At the beach are beautiful hotels, golf links, tennis courts and other forms of amusement, while the beach it- self at low tide offers a natural automobile drive which cannot be surpassed.

Our river front is one of the most beautiful in America, offering won- derful opportunities to the fisherman, the motorboat enthusiast, and camper.

TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES

As a transportation center, Jacksonville ranks second to none in the en- tire Southeast. The following railroads make up through trains which run to Jacksonville over their own lines and connections, most of these trains being made up into other trains at Jacksonville and running to all portions of the State:

Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co. Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railway Co.

Central of Georgia Railway Co.

Florida East Coast Railway Co. Georgia Southern & Florida Railway Co.

Illinois Central Railroad Co.

Louisville & Nashville Railroad Co.

New York Central Lines. Pennsylvania System.

Southern Railway Co.

Seaboard Air Line Railway Co. Frisco System.

Jacksonville receives as high as 110 trains a day, and is one of the larg- est centers for handling Pullman cars in the United States. There are more people handled at the Union Depot in this city than in any other city south of Philadelphia.

In addition, Jacksonville has water transportation, ocean steamers leav-

ing almost daily for Savannah, Charleston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. It also has regular steamship connections with Miami and Florida East Coast points, as well as a very heavy traffic on the St. John's River. In addition to this, schooners and steamers arrive daily from all points of the world loaded with freight which they unload, receiving cargoes sent in here from the interior of Florida, Georgia, and other Southeastern States.

SCHOOL SYSTEM

Jacksonville is justly proud of her most excellent system of public schools. It recently voted a bond issue of one million dollars to erect mod- ern school houses, and these are now being constructed under the super- vision of one of the leading school architects of America, in conjunction with local architects. At the beginning of the school term in the Fall of 1916 this city will be equipped with modern fire-proof schools which will be as fine as any buildings of similar kind in the country.

In addtion to the public schools the Florida Military Academy is located at Jacksonville. Students from nearly every State in the Union are in at- tendance at this school. Not only is the scholastic work of a very high standard, but the military department is under the direct supervision of a graduate of the West Point Military Academy. There is also located here the Flagler School for Girls, as well as nunerous other well conducted pri- vate schools. The Y. M. C. A. conducts a day and night school, and there are several business colleges in the city.

CLUBS

Jacksonville prides herself upon her hospitality, which is well exempli- fied by the many prosperous and beautiful clubs of this city. Among them are the Seminole Club, the Country Club with its fine eighteen-hole golf course and tennis courts; the Germania Club, the Yacht Club, the Business Men's Club, Rotary Club, Traffic Club and numerous others.

PARKS

This city has many beautiful parks, which are splendidly maintained under the supervision of the Park Department. Public tennis courts and playgrounds are features of these parks, being maintained under the direc- tion of competent playground experts.

MUNICIPAL PLANTS

Jacksonville is justly proud of her municipal plants. Her electric light plant is one of the most completely equipped in the country. It furnishes electricity as low as two cents per kilowatt for power with a minimum monthly charge of fifty cents per meter. The water plant is also munic- ipally owned, the water being secured from artesian wells hundreds of feet in depth and being absolutely pure. These plants are both models of their kind, and in addition to rendering the city this satisfactory service, pay an annual profit of close to half a million dollars.
