CONVENTION CITY

Jacksonville is a most popular city for holding State and National con- ventions. Its magnificent surroundings, ample hotel facilities and splendid means of transportation, in addition to its wonder climate, make it an ideal city for holding all large gatherings. The Jacksonville Tourist and Convention Bureau was organized for the specific purpose of securing conventions and handling them after they are secured. This bureau is working energetically along this line for the benefit of its members and the city in general.

MUNICIPAL DOCKS

Jacksonville is just completing and will open in the next few months her municipal docks, owned and paid for by her citizens. These docks, including ground, railway sidings, and all facilities of a modern plant of that kind cost around $1,500,000. The completion of these docks will mean that ships from all parts of the world will always find docking facilities at this port. They will be equipped with all up-to-date loading and unloading facilities, warehouses, ample trackage connecting with all the railroads running into the city, and all other conveniences usually found at a place of this sort.

WHOLESALE BUSINESS

Jacksonville's location renders it a most advantageous point for the wholesale business. The city is splendidly represented in many industries of this nature, which do a total business of about fifty million dollars a year,

while the business done by the numerous manufacturing concerns located here amount to about thirty-five million dollars annually.

BANKS

Jacksonville is justly proud of her banks, which are among the strong- est in the entire South, with a capital and surplus of some $6,000,000, and deposits of about $25,000,000.

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Chamber of Commerce of the City of Jacksonville is one of the larg- est and strongest organizations of its kind in the South. It is ever on the alert to look after the interests of the city in every way possible.

DIRECTORY LIBRARY

A library of City Directories is maintained by the publishers at the Chamber of Commerce for the free use of the public. These directories are kept up to date and are of great value for reference. The Jacksonville City Directory is placed in other directory libraries throughout the United States, where it serves the public as a valuable book of reference, and is a splendid advertisement for the city. There is no other publication which conveys an idea of the size, business and commercial importance of Jacksonville as does the City Directory.

POPULATION

The customary means of estimating the population of a city, is to mul- tiply the number of names in the City Directory by 23 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the Alphabetical List of Names. In the present volume there are 37,786 names. By use of the multiple of 23 a population of 94,465 is indicated for Jacksonville.

In conclusion we desire to express our acknowledgement of the support accorded the work and to extend the promise of every effort to fill the field in the future as in the past.

Respectfully, R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
