St Petersburg is situated on the southernmost point of the Pinellas Peninsula (or Pinellas County), 270 miles south from Jacksonville, Florida. This peninsula is the interrogation point of the State-upside down-thrusting its inquiring outlines some forty miles between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay.
3
«The town is beautifully situated on a gentle slope rising forty feet above the level of the Bay, and extends back- ward in the form of a parallelogram. The streets run east and west and north and south and intersect at right angles. Recently the city has annexed also a strip of land one mile wide and extending westward over five miles through the originally planned city and this "handle," Central Ave- nue, which divides the city into north and south, sweeps east from Tampa Bay, a magnificent boulevard, seven miles long, straight as an arrow, to Boca Ceiga Bay on the west. When the improvements of paving and planting of trees and shrubs along the line of this extension are com- plete, Central Avenue will be one of the famous "show" streets of America.
To the south a large area of partially overflowed land has been reclaimed, and hundreds of valuable city lots form the subdivision of Bayboro, where formerly were only tiny bayous and sand flats. The commercial harbor of the city is here.
St Petersburg is the southern terminal of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad via Jacksonville, and connects with both the A. C. L. and Seaboard Air Line Railways at Tampa via Favorite line of steamers plying on Tampa Bay. Connections are made with Mallory and Clyde line vessels for New York and with' Mallory and Brunswick lines for Gulf ports, also with Peninsular and Occidental steamers for Cuba and Panama.
This seaport is within from twenty-four to forty-eight hours of the great centers of population in the east and central part of the United States, and only three days from other points except the faraway Rocky Mountain sections.
St Petersburg has eighteen miles of brick streets, four and one-half miles hard-surface streets, eighty-seven miles of sidewalks, twenty-four miles of sewers, twenty-six miles of trolley lines. seven beautiful parks, municipal water- works, paid fire department and automobile fire trucks, commission form government, municipal pier forty feet wide, built to twelve feet of water, yacht basin and harbor, commercial harbor, commerce 1913, 329,800 tons; value $10,258.000.

The climate is more even than any other section of the State, in fact the whole Pinellas Peninsula is favored in the matter of climate. This, its greatest attraction, is due to its practically insular position. Summer and winter the climate is ideal. Sea breezes render the summers delight- ful, and in winter the warm winds from Gulf and Bay tem- per to a caress the touch of winter.

Fanned by soft winds which blow from Gulf and Bay. tempering the warmth of summer and banishing winter's chill; with nights cool and pleasant for sweet. refreshing sleep ; with almost every day an "out-doors" day ; and with the purest artesian water for drinking. it is no wonder that physical well-being rises to the highest mark in St. Petersburg. The city has an excellent system of sani- tation, health rules are rigidly enforced. and streets, alleys, and grounds are kept in an admriably neat and clean condi- tion.
Among the chief clfarms of St. Petersburg are the beautiful walks and drives. The eye is delighted with a symphony of colors. In the unique climate of the Pen- insula are grown in perfection not only plants and trees of the temperate zone, but those of the tropics as well. Mangoes and avocado pears, guavas, and papayas or "paw- paws," and bananas and pineapples mingled with the com-

moner citrus fruit trees, such as orange, grapefruit, lime, and lemon. Tall palms grow here, and the magnolia, of glossy leaf and immense, fragrant, creamy blossoms, with oaks and many evergreens. Some of the vines are perfect curtains of glowing colors-the purple bougainvillea, the orange, and red bignonia and trumpet flower, the white and yellow jasmine, and the golden allemander. St. Peters- burg's own special flower is the vivid green and red poin- settia. Hibiscus |and poinciana, many-hued oleanders, rubber trees, and cacti are seen in perfection. Roses bloom all the year, and in the spring the perfume of orange blos- soms is everywhere. This is the season when mocking- birds sing in the moonlight all night long and turn the days to music.
On the Pinellas Peninsula vegetables of every descrip- tion may be grown, together with melons, berries, grapes, sugar-cane, rice, and various forage crops, such as pea vines, bermuda grass, beggar weed, and velvet beans. Owing to its immunity from killing frosts, Pinellas is one of the finest citrus sections in the State. Its grapefruit, especially, are of the finest quality and most delicious flavor. Many tropical fruits may be grown successfully.
For poultry raising there is no better country in the world, and bee culture is profitable.
The soil is for the most part a light, sandy loam, very easily cultivated, with occasional tracts of rich, black, wet muck land. which, when well drained, is the finest of soil for vegetables. Then there are stretches, here and there, of what is called scrub pine land, generally regarded as prac- tically worthless for farming purposes.
Government by commission has recently been adopted as the method of conducting the city's business. Three commissioners transact all business. Police and fire depart- ments are well organized and efficient. The city hospital, the park system, and the municipal library and advertising department are each in charge of a board of commissioners appointed for these purposes.
Much of the fame of St. Petersburg rests ,upon the reputation of the prowess of her fishermen, the actual catches of Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, grouper, trout, snapper, and many other edible fishes being so large as to be almost unbelievable to those unacquainted with the facts.
Cities, like persons, have individuality, and St. Peters- burg's is clear-cut and unique. Whatever the town may be called, it is not colorless or neutral-the earnestness of its citizens may not be gainsaid. They are known, locally and abroad, for their foresight, energy, and enterprise, and particularly for their harmonious, united efforts to advance the common good. And the characteristic of the towns- people most remarked of all is their wholesouled friendliness and unaffected courtesy to strangers.
