PREFACE

We herewith submit our first issue of the St. Peters- burg City Directory, confident that we have placed before the public a complete exhibit of the information relative to the inhabitants, manufacturing, commercial, monetary and social interests of the city.

The miscellaneous department, beginning on page 49, contains full information regarding the state, city and county officials, churches, societies, secret and social organizations, etc, Beginning at page 57 will be found the Directory of Householders, or street guide, containing a complete list of the streets, alphabetically arranged, giving the number of the house and the name of the occupant of every building on the street. Following this department is a complete al- phabetically arranged list of the residents of the city.

The information contained in this issue of the directory will be a valuable aid and assistance to the business men of the city and an incalculable accomodation to the thou- sands of visitors who spend their winters in this, beautiful city. To further aid in this department of information the publishers of this directory will place on file at the Board of Trade rooms, for the use of the public, directories of the towns in Florida and also of the prominent cities in the northern states.

In addition to the St. Petersburg Directory will be found Clearwater, Tarpon Springs, Gulfport, Largo, Dun- edin and Pass-a-Grille.

The Classified Business Directory, the last department in this volume, is a complete list of the manufacturing, mercantile, professional and other business interests of St Petersburg and the surrounding towns, compiled alphabet- ically under their respective headings.

POPULATION

In estimating the population of the city on the basis of the number of names contained in the city directory, the multiple of 2.5 is the lowest used in any city. There are 4,662 names in the alphabetical list of this directory, which would indicate a population of 11,655, exclusive of winter residents.

This estimate is not confined strictly to the residents within the corporate limits of the city, but includes the ter- ritory outside of the limits, where the residents are as much identified with the city as though they resided within.

The census of 1900 gives the city population. 4,127

Unofficial for 1911 5,400

Unofficial for 1913 8,000

City Directory estimate for 1914 11,655

In conclusion the publishers desire to extend their thanks to the merchants, manufacturers and business men of St. Petersburg for their support and to the citizens in general for their co-operation and uniform kindness in fur- nishing the necessary data to our solicitors and enumerators ; and to assure the public that we will strive to make each succeeding issue of the Directory more worthy of their commendation and patronage.

Respectfully,

R. L. POLK & Co.
