PREFACE

This is the thirty-fourth (34th) year of continuous publication of the Official Atlanta City Directory, in it we present all the new streets that will be in Greater Atlanta after January 1, 1910; also the first official map of Greater Atlanta showing the new ward and city boundaries, which was made exclusively for us by W. T. Wilson, assistant city engineer, and is corrected to Dec. 1, 1909, showing every change of street name to that date.

We are pleased to say that after 6 years of agitation on our part, and the recent efforts of Councilman Steve R. Johnston, Atlanta is about to take a long step towards modernization, by having her houses numbered on the centinary plan, and all dupli- cate street names changed; we hope to see this action taken by council early in 1910.

We assume that everyone realizes how vitally important it is that each and every citizen should be correctly chronicled in the city directory a thing that costs them nothing but may be of immense value in case of accidents, telegrams, letters, inquiries- of relatives, delivery of goods or the many unexpected conditions that arise in the course of human events, in fact a person who neglects to have correct and complete information accorded to himself places himself, his friends and all whom he has dealings with at a serious and sometimes costly disadvantage.

We desire to thank all those who have aided us, in our earnest efforts to give correct and complete information.

We have carefully selected our advertisers, and commend all of them to our readers, as being worthy of their patronage and confidence; they are representative of the most progressive busi- ness houses of Atlanta.

POPULATION .206,427

There are 78,270 names in the alphabetical department; 26,090 carry the wife's name; we also give 4,230 names of residents of adjacent towns compiled separately, making a total of 109,500 actual names recorded in this book. Multiplying the 78,270 names in the alphabetical departments by 21/4 gives 176,107 and adding to that the 26,090 wives' names, and the 4,230 residents of adjacent towns gives a grand total of 206,427 living in and around Atlanta.

By a careful calculation made from the original canvass, we estimate the population within the new city limits to be between 135,000 and 140,000, certainly not under 135,000.
