FIRE DEPARTMENT


The Atlanta paid Fire Depart- ment was organized July 1, 1882; now has a chief engineer, three as- sistant chiefs, one fire inspector, thirteen captains, thirteen lieuten- ants, one superintendent of fire 112 Baker and Spring


alarm, eight engineers, one secreta- ry, one hundred and seventy men, eight steamers, eleven two-horse hose


wagons, four hook and


ladder trucks in service, sixty-three horses, 1 automobile, four hook and ladder, 25,000 feet of hose, and two double- tank two-horse chemical engines. The annual expense in connection with the fire department is about $198,660.00. The force is paid as follows : Chief, $3,000 per year ; as- sistant chefs, 1st, $1,800; 2d, $1,- 650; 3d, $1,500; captains, $1,320 ; lieutenants, $1,140; engineers, $1,- 140 per annum; hosemen, $65.00 to $75.00 per month; superintendent of fire alarm, $1,500 per annum. The Gamewell fire system is used with street boxes.
