Concerning Names Not in the Directory

A few remarks about those whose names are not in the Directory will be permissible.

Do not hold the compilers respon- sible for every omission, for the fault is not always theirs.

There are people who do not wish to have their names in the Directory and they exert themselves in every way to keep away from the name- takers.

While it is certainly no reproach upon people to have their names in the Directory, there are a number of reasons why some wish to have their names kept out of the Directory, all of which reasons are good reasons

why the public should find the names in the Directory.

Included in the "Keep-out-Clan" is the super-sensitive person, suffering from false pride, who shrinks from the exhibition of name and occupa- tion before the public. To this class belong many young ladies and women who are holding respectable positions in the business houses of the city.

Then there is the person who be- lieves that the appearance of his name in the Directory will cause him to be assessed dreadfully by the tax- man, so he prefers to dodge the is- sue -- and the taxes.

Then there is the man or woman

who owes some one and is so fearful of the creditor finding the address that all sorts of subterfuges are re- sorted to in the endeavor to keep out. Sometimes a real criminal is hid- ing from the authorities of this or some other city and he considers the Directory man an enemy.

Really, if you are not living at home with your parents and your name is not in the Directory, it is somewhat of a reproach upon you, for if you are living at a respectable address and employed at a decent place, it is to your advantage to have the fact known. The City Directory establishes a respectability for peo- ple. It classifies them as having a regular address in the city, guaran- tees the correct delivery of mail and gives them something to refer to in case they need identification.

It ofttimes happens that the rea- son a name isn't found is because the seeker doesn't know how to spell it. Directories are arranged in exact alphabetical order, and many names of similar pronunciation have widely different spellings ; as fol- lows :

Cadle, Kadle, Keadle

Cain, Kain, Kane

Caldwell, Colwell

Calhoun, Colhoun

Camp, Campe

Carey, Cary, Karie

Carnes, Karns

Carr, Karr, Kerr, Korr

Maier, Meyer, Myer

Rhein, Ryan

Schmid, Schmidt, Smith, Smyth Shane, Schane, Scheine

And numerous others, so the per- son, you are looking for may be in the book if you know how to spell their name.

The City Directory is a matter of great importance to the community, for it clearly portrays the city and its people and institutions and the growth and progress as no other work can. Every individual is inter- ested and should be represented in it and it is a matter of vital import- ance that he be accurately repre- sented.

This, the Official Atlanta City Di- rectory, has had the advantage of a large force of trained, competent and industrious directory men, and every facility was provided and maintained for making the work a model of com- pleteness and accuracy. We take every precaution known to our busi- ness in order to miss no one, and our great care in visiting every house, of- fice and place of business, together with the publicity the work has and the knowledge the public has of the regularity of the work each year as- sures as accurate a census as is pos- sible to attain,
