WHAT THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT LAMPS.
All the care it wants is filling and wiping; five minutes a day is enough for that ; no knowledge or skill required-the Pitts- burg.
There are a dozen other central-draft lamps, all troublesome, foul by habit, with dirt-pockets, hard to clean, offensive in smell, exacting, perplexing, one Almost goes alone. must serve an apprentice- ship at them, but they were excellent lamps last year.
The Pittsburg pours forth a flood of mellow light, as much as eighty candles together, and costs two- thirds of a cent an hour for oil, the lamp itself from $2.50 to $50, according to style-the cheapest as good as the costliest-not so pretty -- best in the world. It is indeed a wonderful Lamp and costs no more than the troublesome ones.
You can see it at any good store where lamps are sold-a store six months behind is not a good store.
Two Sizes: One for family use, to hold three pints of oil and burn twelve hours; the other for public use, to hold a gallon, burn eleven hours, and give the light of three-hundred candles.
Three kinds of family lamps as to holders : vases, twenty-inch stands for the dining table, five-foot stands for the floor.
We will send you a primer ; but buy of your neighbor merchant.

CONSTITUTION PUBLISHING COMPANY, 1891
Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1891 by H. G. Saunders, at Washington, D. C., in the office of the Librarian of Congress.
INTRODUCTION.
HANKS to the rapid and excellent work of The Constitution Job Office, we are enabled to issue the ATLANTA CITY DIREC- TORY for 1891 promptly on the first of the year.
The book has been gaining in bulk for several years past. and, in order to keep it from becoming unwieldy, the matter contained has been condensed (not abridged ) as much as possible. It is printed on a much lighter and finer grade of paper, which somewhat reduces the size of the volume, enabling it to be much more readily handled. If the names increase next year in the same ratio as they have in the past-and they undoubtedly will- the next edition of the work (1892) will be printed in double-column brevier type, similar to the directories of the larger cities of the country.
The United States census taken June Ist gave Atlanta a population in round figures of 65,000. but the Directory canvass, made by careful and ex- perienced men and taken five months later, shows the population at this time to be 84,640 within the city limits. Add to this the suburban inhab- itants, and we find a total of considerably over 90,000.
It was noticed that during the canvass the enumerators found a smaller proportion of vacant houses than usual, despite the fact that nearly 2,000 new buildings were erected during the year. Yet, when even these were visited later, the greater number were found occupied, and in most instances by recent comers. Nearly three hundred new families were found to have located here during November and December, quite a large proportion of whom bore foreign (particularly German) names. This is significant, as heretofore the ATLANTA DIRECTORY has shown a smaller proportion of foreign names than any other American city of its size.
There are of course errors and omissions in this volume, although it is thought they have been reduced to a minimum ; but it must be borne in mind that the information contained is obtained from nearly as many persons as there are names in it, and that it is barely possible that some one other than the publisher is responsible for such errors or omissions. This will be more easily believed when it is stated that 75.864 calls were made and over 500,000 questions asked and answered during the enumeration, and 13,690 calls were made to verify information after the regular canvass was completed. The percentage of change in the Directory in the year is 80, and to many it will seem almost incredible that in every 100 names in the 1890 Directory only twenty remain unchanged; yet, it is true.
We desire to call attention to the fact that we have on file in our office, in the Chamber of Commerce Building, a complete Directory library. It is maintained at a considerable expense, and is designed for the free use of the public. Either the existence of this library is not known, or else Atlanta's business community is different from other cities, as the books are very seldom referred to, and then chiefly by traveling men from other places. In other cities these Directory files are constantly used, and there seems to be no reason why Atlanta should be an exception, and we hope that this reminder will save much correspondence with other cities for information which can be obtained from these Directories without expense or loss of time.
Respectfully,
H. G. SAUNDERS, Manager R. L. POLK & Co.
P. S .- We had the following sentence electrotyped several years ago, and just insert it here now as a mere matter of habit. We shall preserve the electrotype so that we can use it again next year :
" We reter to street numbers, and think we are safe in the assertion, that Atlanta is one of the worst numbered cities extant. The outlying streets are the ones which need attention. Ii any one doubts this, let him take a walk down Terry street or Mills, Hunnicutt, Glenn, Georgia ave, Fowler, Pine, Bradley, Orme, McAfee, or inquire of any physician, policeman, mail carrier, Directory man, messenger boy, or any one else likely to have frequent need of finding persons by their addresses alone. We append a diagram of Georgia ave, which speaks for itself. It is all but impossible to construct a reliable Directory in view of such numbering as this, We have, however, done every thing possible to obviate the difficulty."
