Fire Department.
The Atlanta paid Fire Depart- ment was organized July 1, 1882; now has a chief engineer and insurance inspector, six foremen and two assistant foremen, three engineers, seventy men, three steamers, one hose wagon, four two-horse reels, two hook and ladder trucks in service and one in reserve, twenty-three horses and 13,500 feet of hose, onê double tank, two-horse chemical engine. The annual expense in connection with fire alarm is about $65,000. The force is paid as follows: Chief, $3,000 per year ; foremen, $80 and $85 per month; assistant foremen, $75 per month; engineers, $80 and $85 per month ; drivers, $65 per month; runners $50 to $60 per month. The Gamewell fire alarm system is used with 49 street boxes:
Chief-W. R. Joyner ; office 25 South Broad.
When fire is proclaimed, the alarm will be sent in from the box nearest the location of the fire. On opening the box direc- tions will be found inside for giving the alarm. After pulling the hook once let go and under no circumstances touch it again.
The fire bells to announce an alarm from box 24 for instance, will be struck twice, and after a short pause, four; then in about a minute the alarm will be re- peated until four alarms have been struck. Keys to box may be found in house nearest the box.
