PREFACE:
The publishers take pleasure in presenting to the citizens, this, their tenth volume, of the Des Moines City DIRECTORY; and trust it may meet with approval. The city has been thoroughly and faithfully canvassell, every residence and place of business having been visited, and neither care nor expense has been spared to make the work as reliable as possible.
The first of January, 1884, as ascertained by the canvass, we had 11,816 families, which, estimating 81/2 to the name (and this has been found by actual count to be the average), gives us a population of +1,365, indicating a most healthy growth, as the the census of 1880 gave our population at 22,696.
The DIRECTORY contains a review of the resources and Indus- tries, trade and commerce, and the various interests of the city, a complete resident and business directory, a full list of, the churches, educational institutions , orders and societies, the names of all residents of our suburban towns, also cards of the leading, enterprising business houses of Des Moines.
The rapid growth. of the city necessitates the publication of the DIRECTORY' every year, hence we shall hereafter, issue it! annually
To all who have so kindly assisted us in procuring the in- formation, and to, those who
have so liberally supported the work by their subscriptions and advertisements, we extend hearty thanks
THE PUBLISHERS.

GROWTH AND POPULATION.
Great as was the growth of our city in 1882, the improve- ment for 1883 far surpassed it, as well as that of any previous year in our history, and presents a record which no city of ; twice its population can equal. The array of facts and figures relative to the progress of Des Moines, is marvelous, and our people just begin to realize the wondrous advance we are mak- ing toward the foremost rank among the cities of the Union. The feeling of pride will be shared by all our citizens who have labored to make the city what it is, and who have adver- tised to the world our superior advantages, which has attracted -- the attention of the entire country, giving us a reputation for energy and business activity, and making Des Moines the theme of 'comment almost every where.
This is the necessary result of a combination of favorable circumstances, of which our wide awake, enterprising citizens have taken advantage, and which have made us the metropolis of our glorious common wealth. . Our growth In the future is. assured. 'This city is to-day the greatest railroad center west of the Mississippi river, whose lines of road extending in every ; ! direction, are opening up new territory whose supply depot ; must be Des Moines. Its growth is but just begun, and the

possibilities of the future can hardly be calculated, while the most sanguine scarcely realize the rapid advances being made in transportation facilities, trade, commerce, manufacturing, mining and other industries, which are simply increasing in the same ratio as the country tributary, and there is no city in the United States with a greater extent of rich and rapidly devel- oping country surrounding it, as there is no dity in the coun- try with more natural advantages and so few disadvantages,
.
The first survey of the town was made July 8, 1846. On the 22d day of September, 1851, the citizens voted to have it in- corporated as a town, and articles of incorporation were adopted by the people on the 8th day of October, 1851. The first election occurred October 20th ot . the same year. This was ratified by the Legislature in 1853, and in 1854 an act was passed by which Des Moines became the capital of the State. In 1857, the archives of the State were removed here from Iowa City and deposited in the new State House. Dur, ing the same year, also, Des Moines was incorporated as a city.
The following figures demonstrate the advance in popula- tion made by Des Moines; in 1850, the town contained 502 in- habitants; in 1860, 3,965; in 1870, 12,035; in 1875, 15,782, in, 1880, 22,696; and to-day we claim a' population, January, 1884, of 40,000. Des Moines is the largest city in Iowa, by many thousands, and we doubt not the next State census, 1885, will give between 45,000' and 50,000; and the next United States census will show her population to be at least 75,000 to 100,000. The progress made during the year 1883, is a matter of pride to our citizens.| New railroads were added to our excellent transportation facilities, new factories and business houses were established in our midst, and trade in all departments was very prosperous. Numerous, elegant land commodious buildings were erected, for business or residence, and five thousand' strangers from abroad located in our city.
During the past year the improvements were greater than during any year in our previous history. The orders received by our manufacturers and wholesale merchants last year ex- deeded their capacity to meet the demand, and there is urgent need of largely! increased facilities for trade, and present indi- dations warrant us in saying that more industries will be added to the business interests of the city, and our trade and commerce will be more widely extended during 1884. In proportion to the growth and prosperity in business circles, are the improve- ments in the residence portion of the city. Schools and col-

leges are enlarging, and in all departments of the city's life there is a steadily increasing development.
Des Moines is in the center of the richest agricultural region in America, populated by as energetic, wide awake, enterpris- ing and thriving people as exist on the face of the globe. The city is remarkably healthy, having an invigorating atmosphere, which is one of the inducements to strangers to locate here for a permanent home.
