GENERAL BUSINESS INTERESTS!
DES MOINES BOARD OF TRADE .- The Board since its organ- Szation, September 14, 1860, has been an active agency in all important affairs of our city, and through its enterprise has been the means of securing to Des Moines many benefits. The association is composed of 200 of our leading public spir- ited citizens, who truly have the best interests of the city at heart, and who will use every effort to advance the growth and beauty of the metropolis of Iowa, The best evidence of the usefulness of this Board of Trade is in the fact that it is, next to our city press, the principal cause of the increased spirit of orterprise among bur citizens, and it affords us great pleasure to say that from all points we have the' evidence that Des Moines has made great advances in population, manufacturing, wholesale trade, public and private improvements, during the past three years which have never been equalled in any like ·period.
Any information with reference to the Business of Manufact tilring interests, or inquiries from anyone desiring a new home of business location, will receive prompt attention by addressing the Secretary.
NEWSPAPERS .- Des Moines is especially favored with pro- gressive newspapers, and to this live, enterprising fraternity the city owes much for its ipresent prosperity. | Perhaps in fino department of business has more rapid progress been made Han in that of journalism, which is a sure indicator of the intelligence and progressive spirit of a people.
The press is a potent agency in Des Moines, and is earnestly and intelligently lat work to promote the best interests of the cily. : There are now four daily papers, ten weekly papers, one semi monthly, and eight monthlies published in the city. They ane edited with ability, and with a just appreciation of the prominent position they occupy as public educators.
POST OFFICE-The United States Court House and Post. MOffice is a fine structure built of Joliet stone, three stories and ! basement, at an expense of $206,000, and is occupied by the post office department, the United States Courts, and all United [States officers residing here. This building is noted as a model post office in every detail, and although the amount of business transacted here is very large, yet so systematically and effi- ciently is the work of transmitting the mails conducted, that it deaves no cause for complaint. " The postal business of the city Has increased so largely as to necessitate greater space, and for

BANKS,-Des Moines has a solid financial status, and com- parative statements rank us far in advance of any other city in the west of the same population, in number and amount of sur- plus deposits. A commercial city is always in a great degree dependent upon its banking facilities. The exhibits of the Des Moines banks have proved this to be a greater financial center than many suppose. The banks of Des Moines draw from the principal mercantile and corporate institutions throughout west- : ern and northern Iowa, and furnish a safe deposit for the banks and merchants in the counties of central lowa, Eas- : tern exchange sold by Des Moines banks amounts to millions annually.
LOAN ASSOCIATIONS. - There are six of these associations in our city, which loan not only the surplus money of o r capital- ists, but also of Eastern corporations. Money can be obtained at a low rate of interest. These associations are included with the banks among the solid financial institutions of our city!
BUILDING ASSOCIATIONS .- There are five first-class loan and building associations in Des Moines, all of which have ren- dered valuable assistance in building up our city. The object of these organizations is to aid any of their stockholders in their efforts to secure a home, by lending money to them at a : low rate of interest, to be paid in weekly, monthly or yearly installments. The money is loaned only . to stockholders. There are hundreds in Des Moines to-day dwelling in their own "homes, who, but, for these institutions might not be thus for -. tunațe.
REAL ESTATE -The transactions in real estate during the year assumed large proportions. | City property is in good de- mand, and large operations in real estate, for manufacturing purposes, etc., are recorded. There are numberless' inviting locations surrounded by native groves, overlooking beautiful scenery, or the business portions of the city, for residences; and lots, though in great demand, can be obtained at reason- : able rates in a desirable location for business or manufacturing purposes! | | The rates of taxation on real estate, on the cash valuation is 2,2 per cent.

ILOTELS !- Our hotels are |noted for their excellence in' all those essentials |which pertain to first-class' accommodations. The locations, accessibility, and general management have brought them a reputation second to none in the west .; Their tables present the very best viands the market affords, served in unexceptionable style. While our hotel facilities are excel- lenty they are no more than we need for our daily business, and it often occurs during the year, when State meetings of var rious organizations are held here, that they are unable to proper- ly accommodate all who come. And this need is becoming more and more imperative with the increasing demand cause: ed by the growth of business in our city. The erection of a large hotel which, shall be first class in all appointments, is con- templated this year, and it is to be built, not only with a view to more fully supplying the present demand, but to afford 1 sufficient hotel accommodations for the city for several years . to come,.
OPERA HOUSES .- Des Moines has three fine opera houses, which have a seating capacity of about five thousand. These are well arranged for comfort and convenience, having fine scenery, elegant proscenium boxes, handsome frescoes and comfortable seats. 1
CHURCHES + Des Moines has thirty-eight churches, many of which are strong in members, wealth and influence. Most of the organizations have good, and in many instances large and handsome houses of worship. The church property is valued at about $600,000 and the membership is about 9,000, Fully as many more non-members are found in our churches at . the regular services, which indicates a large church-going pop-, ulation.
YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION. - We have a flour, ishing association, having a membership of about two hundred which is in efficient working order, and is accomplishing much good.
COLLEGES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
The educational advantages afforded by Des Moines are a ma ter of pride and pleasure to her citizens, believing that the

school system of this city is equal in management and results to thit of any city east or west. [. The Board of Education is com- posed of men of broad and liberal views, in pursuance of which thely employ the best teachers at a liberal compensation, and as a result the public schools are conducted in a highly satisfactory manner. In the three colleges of the city, the curriculum of instruction is thorough and comprehensive, and in the various. private- schools the results accomplished are not only theo- rețical but practical.
UNIVERSITY OF, DES MOINES. This, the oldest of our col- . leges, was established a number of years ago by Iowa Baptists, " and is located in the northwestern part of the city, on an emin- ence commanding an extended and beautiful view of the city- and its surroundings! A full collegiate curriculum is main- tained, it aims to keep pace with the scientific methods of modern instruction, and its corps of instructors is energetic and ambitious, and fully alive to the demands of the State and the ·age ..
CALLANAN COLLEGE .-. Callanan College was established here through the liberality of Mr. James Callanan, who gave for the purpose $20,000, while other citizens also contributed liberally.
The college aims chiefly to afford a liberal education to young. ladies, and the boarding department is restricted to them, but it also prepares young gentlemen for college or business. It is thoroughly christian, but entirely undenominational. . It occu- pies central and beautiful, yet somewhat secluded grounds over- looking the city, and is admirably located for such an institu- tion!
DRAKE UNIVERSITY. - This is the youngest of our colleges, and is under the auspices of the Christian denomination. |It is located in a beautiful grove in the extreme northwestern por- tion of the city, the 'college building is a handsome structure and there has been erected a fine commodious building called the Student's Home, besides several elegant residences for the professors, and a number of other buildings. This school has : been greatly assisted by the generosity of Gen. Drake, of Cen- . terville, who gave $20,000 in aid of the enterprise .. The plan of the institution contemplates literary, medical, law, business, theological, art and musical courses of study.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS .- The system of public instruction in Des Moines is very complete and of a high grade. The school " buildings, fourteen in number, are of the finest order, and would

do honor to any large city of the country, and the schools are under the care of able and competent instructors. Men of broad and liberal views compose the board of education; and to them is due, in no small degree, the prosperity of our schools.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS .- Besides our public schools, we have a number of private institutions of learning, which are largely attended, and possessing excellent school buildings centrally located.
BUSINESS COLLEGES. + The two institutions here impart instruction in book-keeping, penmanship, business arithmetic and law, telegraphy, stenography, and those, branches which especially prepare young men and women for active business life. The knowledge obtained in these schools is not only theoretical, but practical as well, fitting the student for the busy scenes of real life, and putting this knowledge to use as fast as it is acquired.
Pose Scio
MUSIC SCHOOLS .- The advantages offered by our music schools for the acquirements of a thorough musical education 'are unsurpassed in the west, and whether the student is desir- ous of obtaining a theoretical or practical knowledge of music, instrumental or vocal, the instructors in these: schools are fully competent to, impart the information desired. These institu- tions are all in pleasant and accessible locations, and are largely attended by advanced pupils, as well as those commencing the study of music.
LAW SCHOOLS. - The Iowa College of Law was located here last year. . Des Moines cannot be excelled as a location for legal training. As the capital of the State, it affords the student rare advantages. | The biennial sessions of the General Assembly give him opportunity to witness the process of legis- lation !. The student has free access to the State Library, which contains about ten thousand volumes of law books alone, includ- ing the reports of all the States and England complete, and one of the fullest collections of legal text books in the west.
The aim of the faculty is to give thorough instruction, and we understand the final examination will be strict, requiring faithful work of the student in order to graduate. --
MEDICAL COLLEGES .- There are three medical schools. here, which offer excellent advantages for the acquirement of a thorough medical education.
PUBLIC LIBRARIES .- One of the most beneficial and .com- pletelsources of entertainment, progress and culture, is afforded .
