PLANING MILLS,-"The manufacture of sash, doors and blinds, inside finish, mouldings, etc., is an important factor in the bus- iness of the city, and engrosses the attention of three firms, whose trade is widely extended throughout a large territory of the northwest.
POTTERIES .- The superior quality of clay found in the vicin- ity of Des Moines for the manufacture of stoneware and tiling, as well as its great advantages as a«distributing point, has in- duced the establishment of several works for the production of these goods. The combined annual product of these works is hundreds of thousands of gallons of ware.
" SPICE MILLS.We have one firm which is located in a spa- cious business block, fully equipped with the latest improved machinery, and appliances for roasting and grinding coffees, and manufacturing pure spices and baking powder. The process used at these mills of Tone Brothers insures absolute purity, while they retain the original strength, and the most pungent and valuable qualitfes, and from personal knowledge of their spices, coffees and baking powders, we feel warranted in the statement that for these qualities they are very popular where -! even, they are known. Their baking powder has been pro- nounced by actual test to be of the highest standard of quality in the market .. Their business has increased year by year since it was established in. this city.
VINEGAR AND PICKLE WORKS. "-This industry is represented in Des Moines by the firm of Menig & Slater, who do a large. business in this line, supplying the wholesale trade here with these commodities as well as various kinds of table sauces. Large quantities of apples, also cucumbers and other garden products, find a ready market here for the production of vine- gar, pickles, etc.
BREWERIES .- Des Moines has four breweries, which have an extensive trade not only in the city, but. along the various. Mines of railroad leading out of Des Moines.
DISTILLERIES .- Two very large Des Moines within the last few
distilleries have been built in years, which have a capacity for the consumption of nearly ten thousand bushels of corn per day, and the revenue to the government upon the product of these establishment is very large. In connection with the works are sheds of sufficient size for the accommodation of eight hundred head of cattle. Most of the alcohol manufactured here is shipped directly to foreign ports.

the business of dying cloths. These works are operated by steam power, and the proprietors do a good business not only in custom work, but also in re-coloring shelf goods for mer- chants and milliers.
SHIRT MANUFACTURERS. - There are three establishments of this kind in Des Moines. These firm's do all kinds of work in their line, employing a number of traveling salesmen who take orders from the trade as well as from individuals. They guar- antee all work, and the trade in this line is rapidly improving and ere long will be one of the leading industries of the city.
KNITTING FACTORIES .- There is no question as to the value of knitted good as a marketable commodity, and the goods pro- duced by the Des Moines knitting factory command a ready sale. They have. all the necessary appliances for manufactur- ing jackets, mittens, leggings, scarfs, hosiery, underwear and all! discriptions of knitted goods.
CIGAR FACTORIES .- The tobacco business in this country, from its magnitude, must be considered an important interest, and the manufacture of cigars form one of the prominent indus- tries of Des Moines. " Eight houses are devoted to this branch of industry. The cigars placed on the market by these houses are equal to any known to the trade, while their business agt gregates hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly.
COOPERAGE. The extensive pork packing establishments and the immense distilleries, together with numerous other fach tories of various kinds in the city, create a very great demand for goods of this class, and a large barrel factory is in operation in this city: which employs one hundred men, and is a decided acquisition to the manufacturing interests of Des Moines .!!
SOAP FACTORIES .- The Des Moines Soap Works are fur- nished : with first class machinery, and specially arranged for the manufacture of soaps of all kinds, and it is their intention to make done but the best quality of staple and fandy soaps.
TRUNKS .-- Des Moines has one house devoted to the manu- facture of trunks, and as they make all grades of trunks, valises, traveling bags and other articles belonging to this line of goods, they are meeting with well-merited success, and the business is increasing.
. BOOK BINDERIESI-This has become an important industry, four firms being engaged in the business. These binderies are doing everything in their line, from rebinding old books to the finest class of work on printed or blank books, and are also manufacturing blank books for the trade.

LITHOGRAPHING, STEREOTYPING AND WOOD ENGRAVING .-- Lithographing is carried on by two firms; stereotyping by two firms, and wood engraving is done in, first-class style. There are two factpries for the production of paints in the city, thoroughly equipped and furnished with' all the machinery and appliances for the manufacture of pre- pared paints of all colors and shades. In their general appoint- ments these houses will compare favorably with any in the west, while for quality and reliability of products they have gained an enviable reputation.
WOOLEN MILLS .- One firm, which about two years ago established a large woolen factory in Des Moines, has been eminently successful in their undertaking? They manufacture a fine quality of woolen goods, in cloths, cassimeres, blankets, yarns, etc. with which their large ware rooms are filled, and their products are highly esteemed by the trade.
MERCHANT TAILORS .- The establishments in this line in our city are first-class; displaying the latest styles, and keeping the best fabrics, both in domestic and foreign goods.
", BROOMS. - The manufacture of brooms engages the attention of two houses in' Des Moines. The business has grown to be an important industry in the city, and the product of these fac- tories is unexcelled by any, in the market. :
STARCH FACTORY .- The Gilbert Starch Works is the most 1 extensive factory operated in Des Moines. Their five story. buildings were elected at a cost of $100,000, while their machinery necessitated a correspondingly large outlay, and their works have a capacity of 3,500 bushels of corn per day. They have an elevator connected with the factory having a capacity of 150,000 bushels. "The reputation of the Gilbert Starch, for purity and general excellence, is established far and wide, and it is one of the brands which is most in demand for the trade, The company have built homes for their operatives and this settlement has been incorporated into a town under the name of Gilbert, which is immediately adjacent to Des Moines - `on the south-east.

' CRACKER MANUFACTURERS .- Des Moines has two firms engaged in the manufacture of crackers for the trade, and the goods sent out by them are unexcelled by any in the market, and with an established reputation for excellence, the demand for them is constantly increasing.

Des Moines is rapidly gaining a reputation as a commercial city, and during the last few years has made immense strides in seduring and rettining the trade of the northwest. Our , pro- gress has of late been most marked in the direction of wholesale trade as well as manufacturing. New business houses are springing up, and all have orders from home and abroad to their fullest capacity. :
Des Moines reaches the trade of a vast territory naturally `tributary, in the most productive area on the continent, and in :one of the best stock-raising and grain-producing regions of the world. The business portion of the city is becoming solidified :by the grection of handsome and substantial business blocks Business men in large numbers have come within our borders during 1883, many establishing large industries, and many more expecting to locate there as soon as time and circumstances will `permit.
The immense trade that centers here is supported by! the country for hundreds of miles in extent, reaching out into the territories beyond!" The trade next year we have reason to believe, will be largely increased, as we understand there is to be another elevator built, and! from increased facilities for ship- ment, a larger number of dealers will be engaged in business. FLOUR AND PRODUCE. The extent of the flour and produce commission business transacted in this city is not generally appreciated by the public, but there are a number of houses engaged in this business whose annual transactions aggregate an Immense sum. For several years the commission business has shown a large annual increase which is due to a great degree to the unrivaled facilities for shipment enjoyed by our
city. The farm, garden, orchard and dairy products of one of the richest agricultural regions in the world, are pouring into

The trade of the six houses has been augmented by the opening of new territory tributary to Des Moines upon the advent of new railroads here. FURNITURE .- One of the most important branches of com- merce is the trade in furniture of various, grades. Three houses in Des Moines wholesale furniture. NOTIONS AND FANCY, GOODS .- Perhaps there is no term ap- I pied to a business of industry, which is so peculiarly American hathat of "Yankee Notions," and while it would be almost im- pressible to enumerate the various articles which. come under tha: designation, it includes an almost unlimited variety, which are essential in some way to every productive enterprise and every household. These must have their supply from our im- portant jobbing and manufacturing centers, and we find four extensive establishments in Des Moines engaged in supplying the demand for fancy goods and adtions.'

WALL PAPER .! Many of our readers may not be aware of the fact that we have one house in Des Moines which ranks fourth in the United States in the sale of wall paper.
PAPER. - The amount of newspaper used by our various newspapers and publishing houses, is simply immense; then the trade of a large territory tributary to our city, has made the business in this line important. There are five houses in this branch of trade, !
CHINA, GLASS AND QUEENSWARE. - Two houses in Des Moines are importers and jobbers of these goods, buying di- rect from the factories, and wholesaling to the trade, and their system of buying enables them to enter into direct competition with eastern houses, duplicating their goods in quality and in price .: They employ a: large force of traveling salesmen, and, command the trade of an extensive territory of the Northwest.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. While we have no exclusively wholesale house in the sale of this, class. of goods, there are. three firms which sell both at wholesale and retail.
DRUGGISTS .- There is nothing which contributes more to the metropolitan character of a city than the establishment of enterprising and reliable jobbing houses, thereby inducing trade to the source of supply. The wholesale drug business is represented in Des Moines by three houses. By such, as are not directly connected with it, the importance of this business is scarcely realized. The trade of these houses extends over a large tract of territory, and amounts to hundreds of thousands bf dollars annually.
PROPRIETARY MEDICINES .- There is but one firm who are exclusive' Manufacturers and Pharmacists. They are conduct- ing a large business, their preparations are among the most popular, and find a ready sale in almost every city, town and village in the great northwest. Since their removal to this city their sales have more than doubled. This might be taken. as an example of what can be accomplished by men of high qualifications, push and enterprise.

The wholesale druggists, also a number of the retail houses, are manufacturers of standard preparations of their own, in the line of medicines, perfumes, etc., which are highly appreciated by the trade.

OILS. - There is only one wholesale house dealing exclusively in oils, and they handle all varieties of illuminating and lubri- cating pils. They employ a large number of travelling sales- men, and their business extends through the western states and territories ( Ou wholesale druggists and grocers also deal in oils of various kinds.

BOOTS AND SHOES! - In this line of trade Des Moines mer- chants supply a large extent of territory in the North-west, two firms doing a business which is exclusively wholesale, while two other houses do both wholesale and retail business, and, all these houses are destined to a continued increase in trade. i.
LEATHER AND SADDLERY HARDWARE .- We have three houses, in Des Moines who wholesale leather and saddlery hardware. | These firms are among our most enterprising busi- Iness men.
HATS, CAPS AND FURS .- There is but one exclusive whole- sale house in this line, although (two firms are doing some wholesale business in connection with their retail trade.
SEEDS .- The two firms here are known throughout Iowa as among the oldest houses in this line of business in the State, and have become ivell known as the leading seedsmen in this section of country. Both these houses have obtained a reputation for fresh and pure farm, garden and flower seeds. Besides these two houses, several agricultural implement firms deal in seeds. AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENTS. The production of agricul- tural machinery has made wonderful revolutions in farming, every farm being now supplied to a greater or less extent with these essentials, and Des Moines has located within her midst five enterprising business houses, who wholesale this class of ' goods.
JEWELRY -- Des Moines has but one house whose trade in Njewelry is exclusively wholesale, but this is the largest house #west of Chicago and north of St. Louis. He imports his goods
