"HE HAWKEYE insures property against fire, lightning and tornadoes; and has done more business, paid more losses and has a larger surplus over all liabilities than any other Iowa company. It is purely a home institution, confining its business to Iowa alone. As to its standing among Iowa people; we refer to the above showing which speaks for itself.

INTRODUCTORY.
. It is with great pleasure that the Publishers of the Des Moines City Directory present to the Public their seventh annual volume of our Great City. , We hope that it will be appreciated by them as we trust it is up to date in every respect., We regret, however, that there are some in all communities who unjustly criticise a Directory when they know nothing of the difficulties experienced in collecting the information and compiling a work of this magnitude. We have very little of this to contend with, however and are content with the knowledge that those who most frequently use the Directory, and are consequently the most competent to pass upon its merits, appreciate our work and are always ready to commend its trustworthiness. The City Directory, if made complete and reliable, is, without exception, the book most frequently con- sulted by the majority of citizens of every class, and hence is the most useful and - indispensable! The information contained in the present volume has been collected with the greatest care by the most competent men accessible; the compilation, proof- reading and printing has been superintended by ourselves, and we confidently believe the work cannot be excelled, either in point of reliability or in its general appearance.
POPULATION.
Des Moines may feel proud of her increase in the population during the past year. While there has been a decrease in some cities Des Moines has added 2,135 people to her population the gain during the past year was 500-more than the annual average in the past four years. This volume contains by actual count 29,509 names; we deduct from this 5 per cent for firm names and removals which leave us 28,034; this number ,multiplied by 2/2, the smallest multiple used, give us a population of 70,085. . Abso- lute accuracy is not to be attained yet every endeavor that care and experience could1 suggest has been made to insure this result.
Nov. 23, 1898.
Yours Respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO.
