The twentieth volume of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Des Moines and Valley Junction Directory is Herewith presented, with the assurance of the publishers that it will be found even more complete and useful than any of its predecessors, and | in all essential respects equal to any directory published.

In the present volume there are 44,486 names of individuals who resided in Greater Des Moines at the time the information was secured. Multiply this number biff -to allow for the names of women and children represented by fends of families- and we have a population of 111,465.

Government-The city is under the operation of the Des Moines Plan : of Municipal Governmenter Under the Des Moines Plan the entire gov- ernment of the city is vested in a commission of five. One of this number is the mayor and the entire body constitutes the Council. Each member is elected from the city at large upon a non-partisan ticket. The function of government is divided into five parts, each commissioner being the head of the department. The mayor is the executive of the Department of Public Affairs by virtue of his office, The initiative, the referendum and the recallare combined with government by commission in the Des Moines Plan.
