DIRECTIONS FOR GIVING AN ALARM OF FIRE.
1. To give an alarm, go to the near- est box, break glass, turn key, open door, pull the hook to the bottom of the slot once and let go; leave door open.
2. Do not pull the hook if the fire bell or small bell in the box is strik- ing as that indicates that an alarm has already been given.
RATES OF FARE AUTHORIZED BY CITY ORDINANCES RELATIVE TO PUBLIC CARRIAGE, ETC.
Section 13 of Section 507 of 1900 revision. That the owner or driver of any omnibus, carriage, cab, herdic, or other vehicle licensed under this chap- ter, shall be entitled to demand and receive not to exceed twenty-five cents (25c) for each passenger conveyed any distance not exceeding one mile.
For each passenger over one mile and under two miles fifty cents (50c). For each passenger with trunk one mile and under two miles, seventy- five cents (75c). Each additional pas- snger of the same party, twenty-five cents (25c). Provided, that sixteen blocks shall constitute one mile. And they shall be entitled to add to the above rate between the hours of 12 o'clock at night and 6 a. m., twenty- five cents (25c) for each passenger. And are entitled to charge when em- ployed by the hour, one and 50-100 dollars ($1.50) for the first hour, and

for each additional hour one dollar ($1); and they are hereby required to convey any passenger carried by them to such part of the city as he or she may require.
Children under five years of age ac- companying any person who has paid full fare shall not be charged fare, and children between the ages of five and ten years shall be charged half fare. Any person violating any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be subject to a fine of not less than five nor more than one hundred dollars.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
The Independent School District of Des Moines under the consolidation law embraces all of the territory and school houses within the corporate limits of the city. Seventeen districts enter into this consolidation. Twelve of these were partly in and partly out and those portions of the districts in- side the city are now a part of the consolidated district. The territory of the other five districts was wholly within the city so that three districts were taken in entire.

WARD BOUNDARIES.
First Ward-The first ward shall embrace all of that part of the city lying west of a line described as fol- lows: Beginning on the south line of the city in the center of Section 20, Township 78, Range 24, running thence north through the center of Sections 20, 17 and 8, Township 78, Range 24, to the middle of the Rac- coon river; thence easterly along the middle of said river to a point in line with the center line of West Nineteenth produced south; thence north along the center line of Nine- teenth to the center line of Grand av .; thence east along the center line of Grand av to the center line of Seventeenth, thence north along the center line of said Seventeenth to the
center line of University av; thence west along the center line of Uni- versity av to the center , line of Twentieth; thence north along the center line of Twentieth to the cen- ter line of Mondamin av; thence north along the center line of Twen- tieth produced to the middle of the Des Moines river; thence northerly following the middle of said river to the north line of the city.

Second Ward-The second ward shall include all of the territory lying east of the first ward, north of the Raccoon river and west of a line de- scribed as follows, to-wit:
Beginning at a point in the middle of the Raccoon river, thence it is intersected by the center line of Ninth; thence north along the center line of Ninth to the center line of Market; thence west along the center line of Market to the center line of Tenth; thence north on the center line of Tenth to the center line of Pleasant; thence westerly along the center line of Pleasant to the center line of the north and south alley between Lots. 1 and 2, of Holland's Sub-division of Lots 3 and 4 of Rose's Addition; thence north along the cen- ter line of said alley to the center line of Park thence east along the center line of Park to the center line of Twelfth; thence north along the center: line of School to the center line of Twelfth north; thence west along the center line of Twelfth north; thence north along the center line of said Twelfth to the center line of Jefferson av; thence west along the center line of Jefferson av to the line between Lots 11 and 12, Official Plat of the southwest quarter of Section 27, Township 79, Range 24, produced south; thence north along said line to the middle of the Des Moines river; thence west- ward along the middle of the said river to the east boundary line of the first ward.
Third Ward-The third ward of the city shall embrace all the terri- tory lying east of the boundary lines of the first and second wards above given and west of the following line:
Beginning at a point in the middle of the Raccoon river, on the center line of ninth; thence easterly follow- ing the middle of said river to a point in line with the center line of Sev. enth as originally located; thence northerly along the center line of said Seventh as originally located to a point where the center line of said Seventh intersects the center line of Sixth av; thence northerly along the center line of Sixth av to the center line of Elm; thence east along the

Fourth Ward-The fourth ward shal consist of all that portion of the city lying east of the east bound- ary line of the first and third wards and west of the following line:
Beginning in the center of Section 22, on the south line of said city; thence north through the center of Sections 22, 15 and 10 to the middle of the Des Moines river; thence nor- therly up the middle of the Des Moines river to Sixth av bridge where it crosses the river.
Fifth Ward- The fifth ward shall consist of all that portion of the said city lying east of the east boundaries of the third and fourth wards and lying west of a line as follows, to- wit:
Beginning in the middle of the Des Moines river, where it is intersected by the center line running north through Section 10, Township
87, Range 24; thence eastwardly along the middle of said river to a point opposite Seventh; thence north on Seventh to Locust; thence east on Locust to Pennsylvania av; thence north from Locust on Pennsylvania av to Maple thence west on Maple to the center of Pennsylvania av; thence north on Pennsylvania av. to Fremont; thence east on Fremont to Twelfth; thence north on Twelfth to Washington av; thence east on Washington av to the east section line of Section 35 above referred to; thence north on the east line of said section and upon the east line of Sections 26 and 23 to the north line of the city.
Sixth Ward-The sixth ward shall be composed of all that portion of territory lying east of the east boun- dary lines of the fourth and fifth wards and west of the following lines:
Beginning in the center of Section 23, on the south line of said city, Range 24, thence north through the

center of Sections 23, 14 and 11 to the Des Moines river; thence up the middle of the said river to a point opposite and south of the southern terminus of Sixteenth; thence north on Sixteenth to Walker; thence northeasterly on Walker to Eigh- teenth; thence north on Eighteenth to North av; thence east on North av to the center line of Delaware street extended south; thence north on the line of Delaware street to the north line of the city.
Seventh Ward-The seventh ward shall comprise all that portion of the city lying east of the east line of the sixth ward as above fixed.
VOTING PRECINCTS.
First Ward. First Precinct-The first precinct shall embrace all of the territory lying south of the Raccoon river and west of the center line of Sections 21, 16 and 9, Township 78, Range 24.
Second Precinct-The second pre- cinct shall include all of the terri- tory bounded on the east by Forty- second, on the south by Raccoon river, on the west by the corporation line, on the north by the center line of Sections 1 and 2, Township 78, Range 25.
Third Precinct-The third pre- cinct shall comprise all the territory lying north of the Raccoon river, east of Forty-second and Forty-second produced to river, west of Twenty- eighth and Twenty-eighth produced to river, and south of the center line of Sections 5 and 6, Township 78, Range 24.
Fourth Precinct-The fourth pre- cinct shall include all the territory lying east of Twenty-eighth and de- scribed as follows, to-wit: Beginning in the middle of the Raccoon river, on the west line of Section 8, Town- ship 78, Range 24, thence north along the west line of Sections 8 and 5, Township 78, Range 24, to the center line of Section 5, Township 78, Range 24; thence east along the center line of said Section 5, Town- ship 78, Range 24, to the center line of Seventeenth; thence south along the center line of Seventeenth to the center line of Grand av; thence west along the said center line of Grand av to the center line of Nine- teenth; thence south along the center line of Nineteenth produced to the middle of the Raccoon. river; thence westerly along the middle of said Raccoon river to the place of be- ginning.
