DE WITT.
De Witt, originally called Vandenburg, is situated on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, at the crossing of the Davenport and St Paul, twenty miles west of Clinton, and is noted as quite a shipping point for grain, stock, and farm produce generally. It was selected in the year 1840 for the county seat, by William Miller, of Cedar County ; Andrew F. Russell, of Scott; and W. A. Warren, of Jackson.
The first sale of lots took place in 1841. The first building erected was
P. S. Towie sells Cloaks, Furs, and Ladies' Suits, Clinton.
a log house, which served the double purpose of being a court house and school, and the first one who taught the young idea how to shoot, was J. N. Wood, who from all accounts gave entire satisfaction., In 1842 J. D). Bourne, the first resident of this county, then sheriff, erected the first frame house.
The town has a decided advantage over the most of our inland towns in the matter of scenery, etc., owing to its high location. In every diree- tion there are broad stretches of noble prairie, beautiful, undulating, and unbroken.
The schools are in a very flourishing condition, unde the able superin- tendance of Mr. Charles Robinson, principal of the High School.
The population is over two thousand.

WHEATLAND.
Wheatland is situated thirty-five miles west of Clinton on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. It was laid ont about twenty years ago, by Mr. John L. Bennett in connection with the Iowa Land Company. The first building erected was the Tucker House, and is still occupied as the principal hotel. The Rogers brothers were the first merchants. It was first known as Yankee Run, but subsequently received its present name from the large quantities of wheat grown thereabouts.
There are some very fine business blocks and residences, among which may be mentioned as the principal, the Petersen Block. Much has been done by the citizens in beautifying the town in other respects, which has served to make it one of the most beautiful little places west of the Mis- sissippi.
The educational facilities are all that could be desired, and the churches are in a flourishing condition.

DELMAR.
Delmar is thirty-three miles from Clinton, fourteen from De Witt. It is built upon the lands of S. S. Norton, E. P. Sparks, William T. Willey, and Amos IInrst-now Adam Kehm-and is located at the junction of three railroads : the D. & St. P., C. & N. W., and the S., A. & D. It is one of the most prosperous and enterprising places in the county, and mainly owes its existence to the liberal and progressive spirit of S. S. Norton, who is regarded as the father of the town. At a census made during the present year, 1876, the population was found to be 416.
