Camanche is located on the west bank of the Mississippi river, six miles southwest from Clinton. It was laid off in 1846. In 1860 it met with a terrible calamity, when a hurricane literally swept it out of exist- ence. Thirty-two people were killed outright, and sixty were wounded. This retarded the growth of Camanche for a long time, but of late years it has picked up, until now it has become quite a business center. There is a saw-mill, grist-mill, soap factory, and mitten factory located here.

LOW MOOR.

Low Moor, located in Eden Township, ten miles west from Clinton, on the Chicago and Northwestern, is too close to the city to ever be- come a large place, though great hopes of it are entertained by its san- guine citizens. The town is close to timber and has water in abundance, which, perhaps, are the best advantages the town affords.

This place was among the first to be laid off after the railroad was built. Its first projection entered the minds of its founders in 1856, and Low Moor, like thousands of others, sprang into existence-on paper. The place was laid out on liberal plans by different parties, and as their ideas did not conformn in regard to the width and number of streets, the different additions do not join together as nicely as possible.

Low Moor has become quite a grain and stock shipping point. The two principal merchants in that line of business are Mr. Hart and Mr. Dannatt.

The principal establishment in the town is the General Store of Messrs. Vandever & Brazell, who have a very large stock of Groceries, Boots and

" They are also extensive dealers in Agri- cultural Implements, and especially " The Gorham Cultivator, " which is believed to be unrivalled for the work which it performs: We commend these gentlemen to the residents of Eden Township.

P. J. Schuyler & Sons also carry on a general merchandise establish- ment. There are several saloons, the principal being carried on by Mr. Thos. Fatchett, another by George Francis Train, (not the original.)

CALAMUS.

place one has a view of the beautiful country for a dozen miles around him.

Calamus was first settled by R. S. Dickinson, in 1860, but the town was not laid out until 1864. The town first began its career on the north side of the railroad, but in a few years the " business center " was trans- ferred to the more favorable location on the south side.

This, and indeed all parts of Clinton County, are unrivaled in the cul- ture of corn. Especially about Calamus does corn grow well. Other grains are raised extensively, but corn seems to attract the more particu- lar attention of the farmers.

Calamus is growing very rapidly, is a very neat looking town, and the class of citizens are enterprising, embracing the following business houses :

Lyssand & Pearson have a very complete and well assorted stock of general merchandise.

M. W. McCarthy & Co. keep on hand Stoves, Tinware and Hardware in great variety. Their stock of stoves being entirely new will be found to embrace all the latest improvements. They are also workers in Tin- Copper and Iron, and propose to buy all old metals and rags for sale by the surrounding farmers.

C. W. Brown manufactures a superior line of Ilarness, and has a neat store embracing everything in the Saddlery line, such as Blankets, Col- lars, whips, Robes, Blankets, &c., &c.
