R. depots, passenger cars, freight cars, and under the trees. He

was equally at home in building up new churches, strengthening the weak, caring for the self-sacrificing toilers. When failing strength necessitated his resignation, that was accepted with universal regret.
A brief and successful pastorate at Salem and Tranquility, (fit names for so sweet a spirit), and in his own house in Cedar Rapids, with the companion of his youth, he awaits the sunset call. G. p. 106.

Meanwhile served Mt. Vernon 7 years and Glidden 2 years. Rec. degree of D.D. from Coe College in 86. This brings the record down to 1900. Here, ordinarily, we stop. But a rest- less subject will justify a few words more. With the persistence of a Scotsman, and the versatility of a Yankee, the Dr. is always waiting for something to turn up. And if the thing fails to turn up he turns it. New England was too slow to suit him, Iowa was too flat for his Scotch taste; but he is in love with the Mountains and the Mountaineers. In domestic relations highly favored. Of the first blessed union a son, Dr. Thomas Baird, and a daughter, Mrs. Fordham, remain to cherish sweet and hallowed memories. The second to Miss Jane Ash, of Mount Vernon, brings him to a delightful home among the peo- ple he longest served. Any other would be satisfied; but after climbing the Rockies for thirteen years of these two centuries he responds to the noise of battle and flies to his mountain work. It begins to look as if the man who for forty years has borne so many wayward people on his heart might find a Nebo up there and fail to come down to us. G. p. 71.
