Beaman, Gameliel C. Of revolutionary stock. His grand- father gave his life for the country that was yet to be. B. 1799. Became a Christian at the age of 24. Union C. 28. And. Sem .. 31. Ord., 31, Pres. N. Y. Labored in hard fields in Ohio till 46. Came to Iowa. Org. Montrose, Croton, Dover, and other churches. Preached wherever he could find a hearing. He wrestled with the Mormon power at Nauvoo, and saw its down- fall. Later he fought the infidelity that followed. On the border line he endured the trials peculiar to the Civil War. At the battle of Athens confederate bullets whistled over his head.

These are jottings he made in his old age :

"By the grace of God, I have been able to preach over 4,000 sermons. Have organized or assisted in organization of 8 churches. Admitted by letter 116 members; on examination, 207. Attended 300 funerals. Married 227 couples. Fees $434." (Marrying was a cheap luxury in his day.)

As to the help he had, A single expression from his wife must do: "The new western home was a log cabin 16x18 fitly furnished. Entering with her husband, she looked smil- ingly around, and said, "Yes, I agree to live here one year with- out grumbling." In old age she wrote, "There is no part of our married life I look back upon with more pleasure than our first years in Iowa." Her maiden name was Eliazbeth Jacobs.

HISTORY

Bell, Launcelot G. This honored pioneer veteran, not a seminary graduate, left his Virginia home, coming with his own covered wagon all the way to lowa, in 36. We find him connected with Burlington, Madison, Shiloh and Fairfield. His work was everywhere; and ended only with his life. B. in Va., 1789, soldier in War of 1812; Teacher, Ruling Elder. Lic. in 36. Gave to Iowa 32 years of diligent and successful ser- vice. He established two female seminaries; organized 28 churches, 3 Presbyteries and 1 Synod.

In his old age he twice revisited the western churches he had organized, involving a horseback journey of 700 miles.

In spring of 68 he visited Nebraska City, where he had or- ganized his last church. Returning, he reached Afton, where he was to hold Communion. Was taken ill the night after his arrival, and said: "Brother Sipe, I have come to your house to die." And so from that loving home he passed to the house not made with hands, beloved and honored by the churches he had served, and a real Father Bell to his companions. D. in 68. Age. 79. G. p. 69.
