The county seat and the second larg .. est city in the state, known as the "Gate City," situated in the cen- ter of the old Fort Hall Indian reser- vation, which extends for 25 miles in either direction, but which has now been opened for settlement and is rapidly becoming the home of sub- stantial settlers. Located the main line of the O S L, at the jnnc- tion of the Ogden & Butte branches, 170 miles n of Salt Lake City, Utah and 244 s e of Nampa and also on the Port Neuf river, which flows into the Snake river, 18 miles w. The O S L railroad shops and offices are located here, and are the larg- est of their kind between Omaha and the Pacific coast, employing about 600 men, their monthly pay- roll exceeds $150,000. It is also & passenger and freight division point for the east, west, north and south. The city derives its name from the famous chief of the Bannosks, this being the headquarters of the tribe.

and the county is named after his tribe, thus perpetuating the name of the once great warrior and his famous tribe. The city was first settled in 1882 and incorporated in 1889. Among the public buildings are a two-story public fire station, well equipped with up-to-date ap- paratus, and represents an invest- ment of $16,000; an opera house, which cost $30,000; two school houses, $70,000; St Joseph's church, a hospital, an academy, a college, a fine court house and numerous busi- ness blocks. Has also a fine water works system, which is capable of throwing water direct from the hy- drants over any building; an elec- tric light plant, which brings its power 25 miles from the Snake river at American Falls, and there gener- ates a .power of 4,500 horsepower, and represents an investment of a quarter of a million dollars, and can furnish power to industrial uses of ¡all kinds; a gas plant, a commercial club, a public library, 5 banks, several hotels, 2 creameries, 2 brick plants, a brewery and a planing mill, 2 newspapers the Tribune (daily and semi-weekly) and the Chronicle (daily) are published. - The Congregational, Baptist, Metho- dist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Chris- tian Scientist, Catholic and Latter -
