BLACK'S BLUE BOOK

PREFACE

Herein is a collection of the most progressive business and profes- sional people of Chicago. The list of names and addresses has not in- creased to any considerable extent but has taken on somewhat more of class. "Fly-by-nights," or those businesses that open today and close tomorrow, so to speak, have been eliminated and the more stable busi- nesses included. We intend to emphasize this from year to year because we believe the public will appreciate it.

Stringent war conditions caused the prices of printing and material to soar, so that our rates for advertising were necessarily higher this year. Notwithstanding, we have more and better advertising this year than last, indicating that the progressive business people realize that they cannot afford to be without representation in Chicago's only colored business book. Numerous favorable compliments upon the 1917 edition attest to the general appreciation of the book. Many calls for copies of the 1918 edition long before it was ready show its increasing demand. All these things tell us of the need of the work and augur its permanency.

Much valuable information is recorded in the appendix, including our own article on "Places You Ought To Visit," and "Sights To Sec." We have placed the Index to Classification nearer the front, so as to make it more easy of access. Also we have striven to make it almost minutely inclusive so that any matter of information can be easily found by con- sulting the index.

We are grateful for the interest you are taking in our publication and trust we may continue to merit your good will.

BUSINESS ACUMEN

Find your vocation and follow it. This bit of business philosophy has come down to us through the centuries, and its significance grows with the years. Thousands of dollars are spent by the government in the promotion of vocational training. Also there are special schools whose business it is to help people find their vocation in life and to guide them in their pursuit of it.

Find your vocation and follow it. Never mind about that fellow who is coining money in the cafe business while you plod along with your tailoring. If that's your calling, hang on to it until you reap success. Chances are you couldn't run a cafe, any way ; you were not "cut out" for_that. Many people come to Chicago with money, which they soon invest in the business that seems the most lucrative, without considering their own fitness for that business. Failure is almost inevitable under such circumstances.

Again, don't worry about the man of the other race who is getting more business than you. Chances are he's got you "skinned" on some- thing. Find out what it is and cope with him. Compete with him in prices, quality of goods and courtesy of treatment. Even go him one better, if you can, and soon you will see the business coming back your way. Comenius, one of the old educational reformers, once said : "If your pupils do not learn, look unto yourself for the cause." So, we may say to our business men : If your customers go away and do not come back. look into yourselves for the cause. Expect nothing on sympathy, but everything on merit.

Have you learned the art of pleasing? Here is a solution of the whole matter. Don't carry a chip on your shoulder, study yourself as well as your competitor, and forget not to study your customer, to please him. Study human nature and you have the key to business-getting and trade-holding. Don't be indifferent to that customer just because he belongs to your own race. Make him feel that you are interested in him, that you like him and are always pleased to see him. Make a fuss over him. His nature calls for that.

EVIDENCES OF BUSINESS

After being in business the next important thing is to seem to be in business. You have the lease for the corner grocery store, get your name and business on the window, right away. Get your business cards. bill heads, letterheads and envelopes made up ready for you when you

xvi

BLACK'S BLUE BOOK

enter on the first. Don't figure on selling a lot of groceries before you buy your stationery ; better work on at your old job a little longer until you can enter your grocery like a regular business man. No, its no disgrace to begin small, neither is it any disgrace not to begin at all in a business where you cannot get up enough speed to make a showing.

A few statistics from our convass of last year will show an appalling neglect in this respect. Visiting colored business places, I found in East 35th street, 31 with business cards and 13 without. On 39th street, I found 7 with and 6 without. On State from 47th to 51st, I found 9 with and 10 without. From 120 to 3000 S. State street, I found 27 with and 30 without.

These are the simplest evidences of business and are essential even at the beginning. Later, of course, will come bigger stock, brighter lights, finer stationery and wider advertising.

SUCCESS

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way : But to act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today. -LONGFELLOW.

Am I succeeding? Am I making progress? Is my life a success ? These questions often occur to the ambitious, in their moments of sober thought and calm reflection. "I wouldn't know" is the answer. We may see evidences, but evidences are sometimes misleading. You are the best judge of your own progress because you know what you are striving for. When a man first begins to think, he becomes conscious of certain ideals. He pictures to himself a state in which he would be happy. The goal is ever before him, and he strives to reach it. He is a success in the degree. in which he approaches it. But even though he may be ever so far from his goal, if he can discern that he moves towards it, ever so slowly. he is succeeding-he is making progress. Read again that line from Long- fellow-that's all The Maker expects of us.
