Mrs. Emma Smith
WAS born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1860. Moved with her parents to De Soto, Ill., in 1867. Studied in the common schools of Illinois and married in 1885. She moved to Chicago in 1886, where she has since lived. She has been a member of Bethesda Baptist church for 31 years.
MRS. EMMA SMITH Founder and President of the EASTER LILY CLUB and the WOMAN'S MAYFLOWER CLUB 2928 Federal St., Phone Douglas 2991 CHICAGO, ILL.
q Mrs Smith had been connected with the various fraternal organizations among our people for years before she conceived the idea of independent clubs among women. She saw where our fraternal organiza- tions fell short of the real need, particularly among our women. According- ly she organized the Easter Lily Club May S, 1913 with five members. This club has since grown to more than three thousand, making it the largest single organiza- tion of colored women in the world.
" On April 19, 1916, having found it impossible to take more members into the Easter Lily, Mrs. Smith called together nine women and founded the Woman's Mayflower Club. This club has grown rapidly until now it has a membership of 400. Recently the second anniversary celebration of the founding of this organization was held with great success.

BLACK'S BLUE BOOK
PREFACE
This is our new 1919-20 dircetory of the colored business and pro- fessional people of Chicago and vicinity.
We are a little late, and should be embarrassed to issue it at this time were it not for the fact that many of the large directories, including the Chicago City Directory, will not be published this year at all, due to unsettled conditions resulting from the war.
So that we may felicitate ourselves in that despite the war, recon- struction and the riot, we are able at this time to present Black's Blue Book for 1919-20, bigger, brighter and better than ever.
Meanwhile permit us to hope that the book may be of some ser- vice to you, and so justify the labor we put into it.
THE COMPILER.
EXPLANATION
This edition of our directory is very differently arranged from that of last year. We have made an effort to facilitate its usc.
For instance, most of the names are arranged alphabetically on the right-hand pages of the directory. On the left pages are those progressive men and women who believe that after having "goods of quality," the next important thing is to let the public know it. This they do by advertising, and so, are classified on the left pages of the directory. Many people not in business will be found in the General Directory or alphabetical list on the right pages of the book.
When you want to find a man in the real estate business. for instance, look for him first under that classification, the index will give you the page. If he is not there, he is not advertised : so look for him in the General Directory or alphabetical list on the right pages If he is not there he is probably not in the book. But many important people will be found connected with the different organizations. For instance, the Appomattox and the Phalanx Clubs have together over 700 members which are listed herein.
The General Directory or alphabetical list will eventually grow to include all the substantial colored people of Chicago. To that end we shall hope that all will cooperate with us-the business man. by keeping his ad standing from year to year in Chicago's only colored business book, and the man not in business whose name. address and telephone we will insert free for the benefit of the public.

Metropolitan Daily Paper Praises Black's Blue Book
The Chicago Daily News writes :
"731 NEGRO BUSINESS HOUSES HERE
"In other lines of business colored men and women have been active. Black's Blue Book for 1917, which is published by Ford S. Black, as a 'directory of Chicago's active colored people and guide to their activities,' enumerated 731 business houses in sixty-one differ- ent lines. Not all of them are on the south side. A restaurant and delicatessen is in Broadway at Lawrence avenue. Many are run by women. They even have their 'lady barbers.' Factories, stores and offices are run by colored men. Each employs from one to forty persons.
"There are two colored licensed building contractors and a num- ber of carpenters, plaster bosses, bricklayers, decorators and others in building trades. Olivet Baptist church, one of the largest in the city; St. Monica's Roman Catholic church, Fort Dearborn hospital. the Crescent hotel, the Ford hotel and a number of apartment and store buildings, were erected by colored contractors, artisans and laborers.
"The largest manufacturing establishment makes face powder and toilet preparations. Anthony Overton, its president, is head of the Chicago branch of the National Business league.
"The classification is as follows :

BLACK'S BLUE BOOK
BUSINESS ACUMEN
Find your vocation and follow it. This bit of business philosophy has come down to us through the centuries, and its significance grows with the years. Thousands of dollars are spent by the government in the promotion of vocational training. Also there are special schools whose business it is to help people find their vocation in life and to guide them in their pursuit of it.
Find your vocation and follow it. Never mind about that fellow who is coining money in the cafe business while you plod along with your tailoring. If that's your calling, hang on to it until you reap success. Chances are you couldn't run a cafe, anyway ; you were not "cut out" for that. Many people come to Chicago with money, which they soon invest in the business that seems the most lucrative, with- out considering their own fitness for that business. Failure is almost . inevitable under such circumstances.
Again, don't worry about the man of the other race who is get- ting more business than you. Chances are he's got you "skinned" on something. Find out what it is and cope with him. Compete with him in prices, quality of goods and courtesy of treatment. Even go him one better, if you can, and soon you will see the business coming back your way. Comenius, one of the old educational reformers. once said: "If your pupils do not learn, look unto yourself for the cause." So, we may say to our business mien: If your customers go away and do not come back, look into yourselves for the cause. Ex- pect nothing on sympathy, but everything on merit.
Have you learned the art of pleasing? Here is a solution of the whole matter. Don't carry a chip on your shoulder, study yourself as well as your competitor, and forget not to study your customer. to please him. Study human nature and you have the key to business- getting and trade-holding. Don't be indifferent to that customer just because he belongs to your own race. Make him feel that you are interested in him, that you like him and are always pleased to see him. Make a fuss over him. His nature calls for that.
EVIDENCES OF BUSINESS
After being in business the next important thing is to seem to be in business. You have the lease for the corner grocery store, get your name and business on the window, right away. Get your busi- ness cards, bill heads, letterheads and envelopes made up ready for you when you enter on the first. Don't figure on selling a lot of groceries before you buy your stationery ; better work on at your old job a little longer until you can enter your grocery like a regular business man. No, it's no disgrace to begin small, neither is it any disgrace not to begin at all in a business where you cannot get up enough speed to make a showing.
A few statistics from our canvass of last year will show an appalling neglect in this respect. Visiting colored business places. I found in East 35th street, 31 with business cards and 13 without On 39th street, I found 7 with and 6 without. On State from 47th to 51st, I found 9 with and 10 without. From 120 to 3000 S. State street, I found 27 with and 30 without.
These are the simplest evidences of business and are essential even at the beginning. Later, of course, will come bigger stock, brighter lights, finer stationery and wider advertising.
