This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you.
Usage guidelines
Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.
We also ask that you:
+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes.
+ Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.
+ Maintain attribution The Google "watermark" you see on each file is essential for informing people about this project and helping them find additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.
+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.
About Google Book Search
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and to make it universally accessible and useful. Google Book Search helps readers discover the world's books while helping authors and publishers reach new audiences. A CAREFUL examination of the details of our RAILROADS and general Business Statistics, will give some idea of the immense business and trade which now is, and must continue to be con- centrated at Chicago. The natural increase of the laboring and other classes of population in- cident to the various mechanical branches of business, now being conducted or projected, with a similar increase in other pursuits, must give Chicago an aggregate increase in population for the next few years fully equal to that of the past, thus making us, during the Spring of 1856
A CITY OF 100,000 PEOPLE !!!
NO ONE, we think, who looks at the present position of Chicago, and reflects that it is situated at the head of navigation on the GREAT LAKES, within reach of the COAL FIELDS of Illinois, the LEAD MINES of Galena, and the IRON and COPPER of Lake Superior, and surround- ed by the great agricultural fields of the West, making us now

can doubt that she is destined to stand among the GREAT CITIES of this Continent! With these facts so self-evident, and with the knowledge that but a tithe, as yet, of these advantages are practically developed, it is very clear that our city hos but just commenced to grow; and we 1 assert the fact to be, that in no city in the United States are there so good chances for

The arrangements of our House, and our knowledge of the property in this city and vicinity as well as of our acquaintance with the condition of the makers of the Bonds, Notes and Obli- gations offered for sale-are such as to result to the advantage of those desiring to invest here, whether the buyer visits us in person, or gives us orders per mail or otherwise. .

or any of the Chicago Bankers; or by drafts on the Eastern cities-together with such instruc- tions as will inform us of their wishes in the premises.
We ask a calm reading of the facts and figures so amply set forth in published history of our Commerce and Railroads, issued last Spring, calling special attention to the articles on Railroads and the Statistics of Population, and merely to aid reflection, suggest these points :
- 1
1st, That at this time there are arriving and departing over one hundred trains of cars daily. from this our "Garden City."
2d, That all these FOURTEEN RAILROADS AND SOME THIRTY EXTENSION AND BRANCH LINES centering here, have been built so far, and will be nearly all completed en- tire in 1855, without one dollar of expense to the city of Chicago, and giving and aggregate of some eight thousand miles of Railroads.
3d, That the increase in population for the year 1853, was twenty-two thousand persons- equal to fifty-seven per cent. and the census completed July 1855, shows a population of over 83,000.
Particulars about property, or general inquiries from non-residents, promptly answered by mail or otherwise.

CHICAGO DIRECTORY FOR 1856-7.
The high and efficient character of this Annual will be increased, in keeping with the growth of the City and the extended patronage bestowed upon it. In order to allow time for many changes and improvements in the method of taking the names, printing, binding, &c., the canvass for this work will not be commenced till September, 1856, and the first edition issued early in November.

PREFATORY.
Ten present issue of the Directory is the third consecutive publication which has emanated from the same establishment; and it is hoped that an improvement will be observed in its .' various departments, in keeping with the rapid strides of our City, the business details of which it attempts to convey a synopsis, as correct as the changes consequent upon its mar- vellods growth will admit. Such as have taken place since the canvas df the City, will be found in the supplementary pages, which have been kept open till the latest possible moment.
-- .
The Publishers take this opportunity of acknowledging the very liberal support they have received from the advertising portion of the community, assuring them that no exertion shall be spared to render the future publications in every way worthy of the public patronage.
