AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY.
· Preface.
compiling this work it has not been the a to ape other Blue Books which may be in existence, but to give a comprehensive view of the achievements of the colored people in Chi- cago. Therefore more stress has been given to the business side rather than social.
We have tried to make it a handy book of refer- ence. The Church, Club, and Society Directory may not be complete in every case but we think it is for the most part correct, except where there have been recent changes.
The Classified Business Directory is not as com- plete as we should have liked, but we ask our patrons to send in their names and any changes or corrections which they may desire and we will get them in the next edition.
The regular editions will be issued once a year.
The next one will be considerably enlarged and will not be confined to business alone.
We wish to express many thanks to the many who have rendered us service in bringing forth this first edition.
Hoping that the public will be pleased with the work.
. We remain sincerely yours,
D. A. Bethea, Compiler.

HOWARD'S MUSIC STORE
RACE ENTERPRISE THAT IS A CREDIT TO CHICAGO
3105 STATE ST. CHICAGO, ILL.
Beginning about three years ago as solicitor, Mr. C. Eugene Howard has worked earnestly with the object of giving to Chicago an up to date music store, owned by the race. So well has he succeeded that his store is one of the first places visited by strangers in the city and is referred to with great pride by members of our race in Chicago.
A glance at this store from the outside would sug- gest an establishment that has been open for ten years in- stead of one year and when you step inside you are n.ore than pleased. Surrounded by pianos, graphopones, sheet music of all kinds, and all that makes a music store. you will always find Mr. Howard with his assistant busily engaged either preparing the mail orders or wait- ing on the many customers. So well has this store be- come known that scarcely a day passes.that they do not receive mail orders from all over the country and Canada. The music writers of our race recognize this place as one · place where their songs are displayed as well as the other fellow's. Mr. Howard intends to still improve his store until as he says, "It will be second to none."
