OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HISTORICAL NOTICE.
IN June, 1855, the First Congregational Church of Chicago opened a Mission Sabbath School on West Washington street, near Wood, and in the following autumn erected a plain wooden building, designed with reference to its possible nse, at some future time, as a place of worship.
In 1859, by an agreement made between the officers of the First Church and the Board of Directors of the Chicago Theological Seminary, the building was removed, at the expense of the Sem- inary, to its grounds, corner of Reuben street (now Ashland avenue) and Washington street, and enlarged at the cost of $1,200; and it was stipulated that the ownership of the building should be conveyed to a Congregational Church whenever one should be formed in that then sparsely settled neighborhood. In October, 1859, the Seminary took possession of it, while the main audience room was devoted to mission uses on the Sabbath.
On the first Sabbath in January, 1860. the Seminary Professors, Haven, Fisk and Bartlett, commenced holding regular Sabbath services in the chapel.
On the 18th of April following, a meeting was called with re- ference to the formation of a church, and it was unanimously voted to proceed at once in the matter, and a committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements, including the call ing of a council. At a meeting held May 7, this committee reported a Confession of Faith and a Covenant, and also recom- mended that the rules of the Church goverment be substantially the same as those laid down in " Punchand on Congregationalism," which recommendation was adopted
The Council for the organization of the Union Park Congrega- tional Church couvened in the Seminary chapel on the 22d of May, 1860. It was composed of pastors and delegates from the Congregation # Churches of Chicago. Rev. Jeremiah Porter was

chosen Moderator, and Rev. J. H. Dill, Seribe. The Moderator propounded the Creed and Covenant, and Rev. W. W. Patton ex- pressed the fellowship of the churches. Nineteen persons, whose names are given elsewhere, then entered into covenant with the Church.
C. H. Stoughton was elected Deacon.
The Seminary Professors continued to supply the pulpit until the first Sabbath in October, 1866. They were succeeded by the Rev. Mr. Helmer of Milwaukee, who had accepted a call, the previous August, to become pastor of the Church. He was installed December 20, 1866.
In 1865 the Church building was removed from the north to the south side of Washington street, corner of Ashland avenue, and remodeled and enlarged. It was again enlarged in 1867; but was burned to the ground on the night of February 21, 1-69 The cornerstone of the present commodions and elegant structure was laid Angust 7, 1869 It was dedicated November 12, 1571, and cost about $200,000.
NorL .- When Mr. Helmer was installed, the entire number of members that had been received into the Church was 211, of whom six had died and 30 had been dismissed to other churches, leaving 122. When he resigned his charge the members admitted had reached 906, of whom 21 had died and 282 had been dismissed, leaving 600.
Dining Mr. Vanderveer's term of service the number of members received was 115. There were 10 deaths and 92 dismissions to other churches leaving the whole membership 613.
