PREFACE.
HE Thirteenth issue of the CHICAGO BLUE BOOK possesses some
IT 4 features which we trust will entitle it to retain the high place in public favor that has been accorded its predecessors. We desire especially to thank our lady patrons for their cordial appreciation of our efforts.
Neither time nor money has been spared to make this work as complete and valuable as possible. The difficulty attending the com- piling of such a book can be easily appreciated; and we therefore trust that any omissions will be brought to our notice, that they may be corrected in future. We keep the entire work standing in type, that such corrections can be made promptly, and in this way we hope to make the CHICAGO BLUE BOOK as nearly perfect as it is possible to make such a volume.
While retaining all the old features, such as Calling Days in the Street List, and Summer Residences in the Alphabetical List, we have added very materially to our Miscellaneous Information, Club Lists, Churches, etc. We shall always be pleased to receive any suggestions from our lady patrons whereby we can enhance the value of this work to them, or any information regarding Social or Literary Clubs and Associations which we have not already incorporated in our volume.
We do not claim the BLUE BOOK is either a City Directory or absolutely an Elite Directory; neither do we pretend to pass upon the social or financial standing of the parties whose names are contained therein. It is simply a compilation of about twenty-four thousand names of the most prominent householders of Chicago and suburbs within a radius of thirty miles, published in the most convenient form for refer- ence by our lady patrons.
.
The title, "BLUE BOOK," is given the work because of its blue cover. It does not refer to blue blood, as many people suppose. Webster's

PREFACE.
definition of Blue Book is as follows: "BLUE BOOK-A parliamentary publication, so called from its blue paper cover, such being commonly used; also, a book containing a list of fashionable addresses."
The data for this work have not been compiled from circulars or from other Directories. Experienced men, particularly adapted for such work, have been assigned to each locality, and the greatest care has been used in selecting these names. In order to issue the book before the Holidays, it is necessary for us to commence our annual canvass early in Septem- ber. We would therefore deem it a great favor if those absent from their homes after October Ist would send us each year the information they wish inserted, in order that the work may possess that accuracy and completeness we have taken so much pains to secure.

TWIN-SCREW EXPRESS AND PASSENGER SERVICE To Plymouth (London), Cherbourg (Paris) and Hamburg
The Twin-Screw Express Steamers DEUTSCHLAND, AUGUSTE VICTORIA, COLUMBIA . and FÜRST BISMARCK leave New York Thursdays for Plymouth (London), Cherbourg (Paris) and Hamburg, returning from Hamburg via Southampton (London) and Cherbourg (Paris). The S. S. Deutschland holds the record for fastest time, having maintained a speed of over 23 1-2 knots per hour across the Atlantic. The other three vessels of this service are also among the finest, fastest and largest ships afloat.
The steamers GRAF WALDERSEE, PRETORIA, PATRICIA, PENNSYLVANIA, MOLTKE and BLUECHER (the latter two having been built in 1901-2) of the Twin-Screw Passenger Service, which sail from New York Saturdays, for Plymouth (London), Cherbourg (Paris) and Hamburg, returning to New York via Boulogne and Plymouth, have a ton- nage of more than 13,000 tons. They have become very popular with the traveling pub- lic, owing to their unusual steadiness even in the roughest seas, so that seasickness is a thing almost unknown on board of these steamers.
