Orrin Smith and others from 1849 to 1853; afterwards engaged in the confectionery business; is now a teacher of music and paper hanger ; mar- ried July, 1848, Mrs. Corinda Howard ; they have five children: Margaret, Richard, Virginia, William and Louis.

Moore became a partner, the firm name continuing as before; Mr. Crawford was Alderman of the Third Ward one term; he is a Director of the Merchants' National Bank; he married Jane Ritchie Oct. 26, 1842; she was born near Ballibay, Ireland; they have four children : Agnes, now Mrs. Isaac F. Second and Lafayette Streets; born in Carlisle, Pa., Oct. 17, 1817; in 1834 went to Montgomery Co., Tenn .; lived there until 1840, when he moved to St. Louis; remained there until 1843, then came to Galena ; was a partner from that time un- til 1852 with Wood, Howse & Co .; then entered into partnership with Nicholas Stahl, and they continued together until the death of Mr. Stahl in 1876; Mr. F. was Alderman from 1857 to 1860; for three years thereafter lie was president of the School Board; he has been an Elder in the South Presbyterian Church from the time of its organization, in 1846, to date; his first wife was Mary Campbell, of Albany, N. Y .; they were married Feb. 27, 1845; died in Aug. of same year; second wife was Cynthia Torode, of St. Louis; married Aug. 31, 1848; she died April 4, 1855; they had three children; lost one son ; the living are : Annie H. and Geo. FOWLER BENJ. F., M.D. Office in Merchants Bank Building; residence corner High and Wiglit Streets; born in Steuben Co., N. Y., April 2, 1825; he was educated at Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, at Lima, N. Y .; graduate of Geneva Medi- cal College, class of 1850; practiced in Geneseo, N. Y., from 1850 to 1856; he then removed to Hanover, Jo Daviess Co., Ill., and practiced there until he came to Galena in 1861; was Alderman of the Third Ward three terms, 1872, 1873 and 1875; was Pension Surgeon here from 1862 to 1865, when he resigned; was re- appointed in 1874, and still acts in that capacity; he is also County Physician, has held that position for several years- about ten years in all; married Ann A. La Salle Oct. 19, 1853; she was born in Birdsall, Allegany Co., N. Y .; they have five children: Allie M., Annie L., Chas. A., Benjamin F., Jr., and Jennie P .; Mr. F. and family are members of the South Presbyterian Church.

of East Galena Tp .; he is a member of German Catholic Church and of the Ger- man Benevolent Society: married Mar- garet Yunker Nov. 12, 1861; she was born in Germany; they have four children living: Philip, Josephine, Anna and Paul; lost one daughter.
FRENCH JOHN B. City Clerk; born in Charles Co., Md., Dec. 12, 1820; he taught school in Maryland five years, and was engaged in mercantile business there one year; came to Galena in May, 1849; from June, 1849 to 1860 he was with Nicholas Dowling in hardware business; after the death of Mr. Dowling, in 1860, he continued to assist the estate in conducting the business until 1862, when he engaged in same business for himself and carried it on until 1871; in 1870 he was elected City Treasurer, and held that position until Aug., 1877; he also acted during the same period as City Clerk, pro tem, with the exception of two or three short intervals; in Aug., 1877, he was appointed City Clerk ; married Mary L. Jones, Feb. 9, 1847; she was born in St. Mary's Co., Md .; she died Sept. 12, 1863; they have five children living: Wm. T., Eugene E., Mary H., Josephine C. and Walter H .; lost three; Mr. French's present wife was Mary J. Delahunt; they were married Jan. 18, 1865; she was born in Ireland ; two children by this marriage, Caroline M. and Chas. H .; Mr. and Mrs. F. are members of the Catholic Church.

FRITZ JOHN, Proprietor of Sash, Door and Blind Factory, corner Perry and Water streets; residence on Third Street, corner Adams; born in Germany Feb. 4, 1823; came to Galena in 1846; worked at cabinet making business twenty-three years; engaged in present business in 1873; married Regula Blumer Oct. 14, 1847; she was born in Switzerland; they have three children: Susan Louisa, John.
