PREFACE 1417846
The time seems opportune for a new History of Delaware County. It is twenty-six years ( 1881) since the "History of Delaware County" was issued by Kingman Brothers, of Chicago. In 1844. "A Portrait and Bio- graphical Record of Delaware County, Indiana," was issued by A. W. Bowen & Co., of Chicago. The publisher, did not claim it was a history. In 1898, Mr. John S. Ellis published a work of 194 pages, entitled, "Our County, Its : History and Early Settlement by Townships." This work, while valuable, · was not comprehensive as to historical matter. -
In the present work the chapter on Military History of Delaware County is contributed by Hon. Asbury L. Kerwood, himself a veteran who entered j the service during the Civil war from this county. The article is historical, exhaustive, and intensely interesting. Mr. Kerwood is to be complimented for the pains he has bestowed upon his work.
Miss Artena M. Chapin, librarian of our City Library, furnishes a valuable resume of the rise and development of our present magnificent library.
Mr. C. H. Church, cashier of the Delaware County National bank has contributed the article on Banks. Ilis well known standing as a banker and contributor to financial literature, is a sufficient guarantee of its value. The Editor has spared no pains, and has bestowed a great deal of time in collecting facts for the Medical Chapter.
Mr. Charles A. Van Matre, County Superintendent of Schools, has generously furnished the material for the Educational Chapter.
Mrs. Edward A. Olcott, daughter of the late Frederick E. Putnam, has kindly permitted the use for publication of her father's diary,-rich in facts relating to the carly history of Muncietown as far back as 1842.
The articles on the History of the several Churches, Lodges. Societies, Chibs, Labor Unions, etc., have been supplied by members of these respec- tive orders and, doubtless, in the main are correct. Generally the illustra- tions of the churches have been loaned for the work by the respective societies, for which thanks are hereby tendered.
A number of interesting features have been added that will attract the attention of the reader. Official records have been searched ; elderly per- sons consulted and their statements verified; correspondence has been car- ried on with persons remotely situated; family Bibles have been consulted, and cemeteries have been visited and inscriptions on tombstones transcribed. In short, every available source of information has been sought ; and while mitch that is valuable has necessarily been omitted, on the other hand it will be found that much that is valuable has been recorded.
In the preparation of this work a vast amount of information has been

discovered that properly belongs to a County Historical Society. Delaware County should not long delay the formation of such a society.
The Editor wishes especially to thank those who have aided this work by the contribution of articles. Also to thank all persons who have so kindly assisted in furnishing information that has contributed to the value of the work. Every name can not be mentioned here, but a few have ren- dered such valuable assistance that it seems proper to make special mention : Judge Joseph G. Leffler, Samuel B. Murphy, Michael Dunkin, James R. Turner, Robert M. Snodgrass, Mrs. Julia A. Williamson, Mrs. Mary Car- penter, William A. Blair, Samuel A. Dickover, William II. Peacock, David M. Bell, Mrs. Mary M. The Editor asks indulgence for all mistakes and errors, hoping they will be overruled, forgotten, and he trusts-forgiven. G. W. H. K.
