While thorough work is required, the amount is proportioned to the ability and health of each pupil. Two courses of study are pur- sued: One of four years, fitting for entrance into any of the higher colleges for women; the other, general, and elective by the student. Special advantages are offered in the study of

MODERN LANGUAGES.

SOLD ONLY BY SUBSCRIPTION.

R. L. POLK & CO., PUBLISHERS, TRIBUNE BUILDING, DETROIT, MICH.

Siemon & Bro., Booksellers and Stationers, 50 Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1883. by R. L. POLK & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTORY.

The eighth volume of the Fort Wayne City Directory is herewith presented to the public, with the belief that it accurately represents the mercantile and manufacturing interests of this important and growing city of the State of Indiana. That portion devoted to miscellaneous information (pages 13 to 42 inclusive), as well as all other matter con- tained in this volume, has been thoroughly revised and cor- rected to date.

The directory proper is embraced in pages 45 to 430, and shows an increase over the edition for 1882-83, of 24 pages.

The publishers have, at considerable extra expense, included a full and complete business directory of all the important towns within a radius of some 30 miles of the city, with the belief that such names will be found of much value to the patrons of the directory.

Among the new features of this year's volume is the map of Fort Wayne, which has been corrected to date expressly for the present edition of the directory.

For the liberal patronage bestowed on the work the pub- lishers return thanks to the subscribers, and trust that the publication of their next annual volume may find the com- mercial prosperity of Fort Wayne as satisfactory as that which now exists.
