VOLUME IX. SOLD ONLY BY SUBSCRIPTION.

R. L. POLK & CO., PUBLISHERS, TRIBUNE BUILDING, DETROIT, MICH.

Siemon & Bro., Booksellers and Stationers, 50 Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1885, by R. L. POLK & Co., in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

INTRODUCTION.

In presenting to the public the ninth volume of the Fort Wayne City directory the publishers are confident that it will be accepted as the most complete of the series. The general plan of the work is quite the same as the preceding issues. The first 54 pages are devoted to useful miscellaneous informa- tion relating to the city in general, with lists of churches, schools, City and County officers, institutions, newspapers, incorporated companies, secret societies, etc., etc. Immedi- ately succeeding this is the directory proper, containing 381 pages of business firms and private individuals arranged alphabetically. The remaining 64 pages comprise a classified business directory, containing the names of all persons engaged in business or professions, classified under their respective occupations:

An encouraging increase in population is apparent, and after a careful computation the publishers are able to con- gratulate the citizens of Fort Wayne on the possession of a population of 37,800, a large increase since the last edition of this directory was issued. This fact should be highly gratify- ing to the people of Fort Wayne, and is a tribute to the enter- prise and energy of its citizens.

The publishers desire to express to the business and profes- sional men of Fort Wayne their acknowledgment of the generous support which they have accorded to this work, and in conclusion would say that in the future they will be as unremitting in their endeavors to give satisfaction as they have been in the past, and they ask for liberal reciprocation from the public.
