GAB-BOOK.

PREFACE.

The getter up of this little book has endeavored to give its purchasers full value for their money. As it is ostensibly a Business Directory and City Guide of the greatest railroad city on the continent, it should, in this respect alone, give the full price of the book in satisfaction. The literary matter is all original, and contributed by several of our leading celebrities, while the other " fillin'" is really valuable to every well-regulated family. As it might not be generally known just what were the motives that called into existence this little volume of usefulness, the author wishes it distinctly understood that it was solely to fill a long felt want.

CITY GUIDE.

YANKEE DOODLE.

Father and I went down to camp Along with Captain Goodwin, Where we see the men and boys As thick as hasty puddin'. There was Captain Washington Upon a slapping stallion, A giving orders to his men- I guess there was a million. And then the feathers on his hat, They looked so tarnal fina, I wanted Pockily to get To give to my Jemima.

And then they had a swampin' gun As large as log of maple, On a deucid little cart- A load for father's cattle.

And every time they fired it off It took a horn of powder, It made a noise like father's gun Only a nation louder.

I went as near to it myself As Jacob's under pinnin', And father went as near ag'in- I thought the deuce was in him.

Cousin Simon grew so bold I thought he would have cocked it; It scared me so I shinked off And hung by father's pocket.

And Captain Davis had a gun, He kind a clapped his hand on 't, And stuck a crooked stabbing iron Upon the little end on 't.

And there I see a pumpkin shell As big as mother's basin, And every time they touched it off They scampered like the nation. And then I see a little keg, Its heads were made of leather, They knocked upon 't with little sticks To call the folks together.

And then they'd fife away like fun, And play on cornstalk fiddles, And some had ribbons red as blood All wound about their middles.

The troopers too would gallop up And fire right in our faces, It scared me almost half to death To see them run such races.

Old Uncle Sam came then to change Some pan-cakes and some onions, For lasses cakes to carry home To give his wife and young ones. I see another suarl of men A digging graves, they told me, So tarnal long, so tarnal deep, They tended they should hold me. It scared me so I hooked it off, Nor slept as I remember, Nor turned about 'till I got home Locked up in mother's chamber,

T. B. SPRATT'S Court House Lunch Room AND RESTAURANT, No. 14 NORTH DELAWARE ST.

First-Class in every respect and conducted on strictly temperance principles. Pure Java Coffee, at five cents per cup. Fine Cigars a specialty.

IT is announced at Washington that the appropriation bills are in danger, and that the Indian supply is already exhausted. Good gracious. What will Crook and Terry do in such an emergency ? Anybody might have seen that, with the reckless manner in which they have been wasting this great American product, the supply couldn't last forever.

THERE is a minister on the southside who is quite deaf, ordinarily, but when on the cars, or amid any kind of tumult, he can hear the slightest whisper. This seemingly unaccountable phenomenon can be explained, scientifically, on a very simple hypothesis. His ear is like an opheclide-once get its cavernous recess filled and an addi- tional breath, however slight, is clearly apparent.
