PREFACE.
In presenting this work to the public, I have been delayed by a combination of circumstances beyond my power or control; among the most prominent of which is the laborious task of numbering the buildings, which is now completed as far as it could be, which will enable me to avoid most of the errors and imperfections of past editions. In this, my first, I have endeavored to make it, every part and portion, correct and unobjectionable. The work will on examina. tion speak for itself; it needs no praise from me. That there has been a steady increase of business and population in our city is seen and felt by us all; and when we look around and behold the great number of buildings being erected -- cotton and bagging and rope factories, white-lead works, furnaces, steamboats, public buildings, &c .- springing up as- if by magic-we may justly anticipate that the
QUEEN CITY OF THE RIVERS
Will yet be the second city in the Union. Look back twen- ty-five years, with a rail fence and stumps on Main street, with a population of about 1600; then anticipate twenty- five years to come: should we continue to increase in the same proportion, in the year 1870 this city will contain a populatian of 200,000, with Shippingport and Portland vil- lages, submerged in our lengthened streets. Many obsta- cles, however, may be in the way of our rising greatness One very great detriment will be found in our water accom. modations. Many objections have been made to the estab-
lishment of public water-works, and a newspaper war kept up on the subject, each party contending for their position. To each citizen of the conflicting parties we would respect- fully say: rid yourself of all prejudice, and go in for the public weal-take a view from the centre of the city, and we are confident your mind will be made up that water-works are not only practicable, but that they must and shall be es- tablished here. When this shall be consummated, an im- mense impetus will be given to the growth of Louisville. THE AUTHOR.
