FOREWORD
In presenting this Manual and Directory of the Brookside United Brethren Church, we hope that it will be a blessing and that it will serve some definite ends. First: We trust that it will acquaint you with the history and traditions of the church and familiarize you with the present organization and member- ship. Second: We believe that it will draw us closer together in the Master's work and create anew in us that old time custom of being neighborly. Third: We hope it will make the Church and her activities become more sacred to our lives, as involving duties to be performed and privileges to be enjoyed.
?
This Manual and Directory can be of great value to the membership of the Brookside United Brethren Church and it is our sincere wish that you preserve this copy in some convenient place where it will be accessible for constant use. You will find herein listed all of the officials of the Church and the organiza- tions. A directory of the membership, alphabetically arranged, with addresses and telephone numbers will be found in the clos- ing pages. That there should be mistakes and omissions in this list is possibly inevitable. However, we hope that these errors have been reduced to the minimum, and if there have been omis- sions, the pastor will appreciate it, if you will notify him. In this connection, let us urge that you notify the pastor of any people moving into our community, or of people that should be won for our Christ and Church, and also of any members of the church and community that are sick or in distress.
We want to thank those who have helped in a special way in preparing and publishing this Manual and Directory. We are indebted to Mr. Clem C. Voorhis for taking the pictures; to Mr. Walter Latz, of the Standard Printing Co., for his advice and courteous service; to Mr. Robert Kopp of the U. S. Photo En- graving Company for his splendid service; to Mrs. Goldie Breed- love and Mrs. Alta Hall for their fine work in securing adver- tising; and to others who have helped in many ways.
PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS
We ask you to read the ads and to patronize those who have helped to make the Manual and Directory possible. If a church decides to secure advertising to help pay for its pub- licity, it ought to have the same determination to make such ad- vertising valuable to those who invest in it. Thus we urge you again to patronize our advertisers and please tell them that you saw their ads in the Manual and Directory of the Brookside United Brethren Church. We also ask you to notice and to use the directory of advertisers in the back of this book. These ad- vertisers are for us and we are for them.
"What develops a church or an individual, is identification with a Great God in a great cause."

THE BOOK OF LIFE is THE BIBLE BEAUTIFUL
It is the Bible re-created to tell the life story of each of the great Bible characters. It is NOT a book about the Bible. It is the actual language of the Bible, the King James Version; beautifully printed, attractively illustrated, and arranged to conveniently bring out all of the matchless beauty, the poetry, the romance, and the complete story of the Bible itself and of its characters.
Gene Stratton Porter said, "Our children need to be taught the love of God. To my mind, the wave of lawless- ness, immorality, and irresponsibility sweeping the country today is directly the result of taking the Bible from the school and neglecting it in the home."
YOUR CHILD WILL ENJOY READING THE BIBLE "THE BOOK OF LIFE WAY."

A Church with a purpose and a program
THIS IS MY CHURCH
Here through helpful services I come close to God and to my human comrades in worship.
Here in many ways I learn the truths by which I live an earnest, happy, useful life.
Here I gain the strength by which I become that which I have learned I ought to be.
Here I find comfort in my sorrow, courage in my struggle, joy in my victories.
Here I come into union with Christ, my Master and Friend.
THE GREATEST PATH
The greatest path in the world is the path from your door to the door of your Church.
If all of us faithfully used this path and were guided by its radiant influence, the nation would be safe, crime subside, busi- ness prosper, and all hearts have peace.
For this path was made by the Son of Man for the sons of men, that walking humbly into His Holy Presence in the Church they might afterwards walk together as brethren in the world.
Are you using THE GREATEST PATH?
"The church is the tabernacle of the Most High and He asks you to meet Him there."

A BIT OF HISTORY
Brookside forty-five years ago or in 1885 was a separate community, outside the corporation limits, and known as Spring- dale, having a few scattered families. Feeling the need for re- ligious training, these people began holding meetings in their homes. Realizing the need for a place to worship for the com- munity, Rev. J. A. Bushong, Thomas Hurley, a Mr. Lampton, their wives and others organized in 1889 a class and built a one-room frame building with a balcony across the rear. This was dedicated as Springdale United Brethren Church. Later a vestibule and belfry were added. Rev. Bushong drove a horse and wagon to Greenfield to get the bell. The structure was heated with stoves and lighted with oil lamps.
Among the early members and active workers of the church, including various officers, teachers and other leaders, were A. M. Springer, S. A. Lapham, Thomas Campbell, George Geddis, Harry Burns, S. B. Phenegar, a Mr. Wolfgang, Elmer Casady, their families and still others.
The church, at that time, was located near Thirteenth street on North Rural street. The Home Missionary board gave financial assistance to the support of the pastor. Those who served during this period were the Reverends D. O. Darling, Frank Hunt, J. E. Shannon, J. E. Paddock, M. O. Jarvis, George Meyers, Rev. Dickensheets and Rev. Reynolds.
In 1901 a lot at the corner of Dearborn and Eleventh streets was purchased and the church moved across the commons to this site, where it was known as the Second U. B. Church. Rev. Darling was then the pastor, followed by Rev. C. N. Broughman, Rev. Z. C. Mower and Rev. M. K. Richardson. The latter serv- ed six years, during which the present location, Olney and Eleventh streets, was acquired and a brick building erected, the name being changed to Brookside Park U. B. Church.
Dr. James B. Parsons, now Superintendent of White River Conference, was pastor six years, followed by Rev. C. P. Martin and Rev. A. Bash Arford, each serving three years. In recent years adjoining property was acquired and the present edifice was completed during Rev. Arford's pastorate. Rev. Forest A. Reed, the present pastor, is serving his third year.
During the years of beginning and during the years of building, there was much sacrifice and hard work for those who were carrying the heavy burdens of the congregation. But God has blessed and the present membership numbers about 800. The Sunday School has grown until it averages more than 400 per Sunday. The facilities of the present church plant make it possible to carry out a fourfold program of Christian Education. The great crowd of young people and children that belong and attend inspires and challenges the membership to plan and work for a greater and better Brookside United Brethren Church.
The program of Brookside Church is one of soul winning and character building. The Brookside Church tries to help lift the moral temperature of the community and endeavors to stand for the right. There have been more than 200 accessions un- der the present pastorate. The Missionary spirit is kept fer- vent by the Missionary organizations, and Brookside Church pays her Benevolence quota monthly. Brookside Church was one of the three churches of the 165 in the conference to meet the standard last annual conference, and according to the statis- tical secretary, Brookside church had the best report of the conference.
"The greatest asset you have is your relationship to Christ and His Church."

SOME FACTS ABOUT OUR CHURCH
The United Brethren Church as a denomination is the oldest American Church. It was founded the same year that Washington was inaugurated President of the United States and within a short distance of where his inaugural took place. "The United Brethren Church was founded in Baltimore, Mary- land, in 1789 by a conference of seven ministers, presided over by Philip William Otterbein. These ministers believed in "ex- perimental" religion and they founded a religious society for the purpose of helping one another and promoting "heart-felt" Christianity, little thinking that their organization would be the beginning of a great denomination. Seven other ministers soon joined the society. The Church thus founded was not a schism or an offshoot from another denomination but was com- posed of German speaking people of the Reformed, Mennonite, Moravian United Brethren, Lutheran and Presbyterian persuas- ion. The German language was used in preaching and writing until the year of 1830, when the introduction of English-speak- ing people into the church made it necessary to use both languages.
The Government of the United Brethren Church resembles the government of the nation. The ideal of the United Brethren Church is that in which all the people bear a part, both in minis- try and laity. Such a government is of the people, by the people, and for the people.
The United Brethren Church has always been very evan- gelistic. It had its inception in the great religious awakening and revival of 1755. The United Brethren Church has faithfully stood for the "faith once delivered to the saints." The growth of the Church has been great in the last quarter of a century. At the present time the United Brethren Church ranks third, numerically, in Indiana.

Think what a brighter future our child- ren would have. Stop and give this some thought if you continue to trade with the Chain Stores and force all Independent Merchants out of business. Your children will never have the opportunity to go in business for themselves. All they can do is to work all their life for a small wage. Don't force a life of poverty on your children for the sake of trying to save a few cents. Trade only with Independent Merchants and give our boys and girls a chance. It is the future of our children I am interested in."

MY PRAYER
Gracious Master, all this day May I love thee well, I pray; Kept by thee from every wrong, Singing out a cheering song, May I bring to hearts that weep Thine own comfort, sweet and deep, May I gather to thy fold Little children, trembling, cold.
May I thirst and ache dispel With the water from thy well; Feed the hungry, both with bread And the Word that thou hast said ; May I show in look and deed Thee for whom all men have need ; Yea, my Master, all this day, May I love thee well, I pray. -Norman Schlicter
FOREST A. REED, Pastor
I have been happy in my pastorate at Brookside because of the cooperation and loyalty of the members. The success that has come to our church in paying obligations on debt, winning souls, building up the organization, etc., has been due to two things: cooperation and prayer. The Church is made up of indi- viduals and there is but one way to make Brookside Church what it should be-that is for EACH MEMBER to be a conse- crated, devoted servant of Christ and become IN SELF what the church ought to be as a whole. Let us take the slogan "We will work and win with Christ," and let us claim God's prom- ises, expect great victories, be "doers of the Word," love every- body and truly serve our God and fellowmen. As your pastor, I am your servant and if I can help the church or community in any way, I shall count it a privilege to respond.

Only those who have been closely associated with our trus- tees in the building of our splendid church plant and in the financing of the enterprise, can appreciate their untiring efforts in Kingdom Buildng. Their vision for the church and their in- terest in the community helped to secure our present church plant which is a blessing to the membership and an asset to the community. They have carried heavy responsibilities, but they have done it willingly.

THE COMMUNITY AND THE CHURCH
We are aware that a good church building is an asset to a community; it makes property of more value, but a building will not suffice unless there is a "real heart" in the building. The "real heart" of a church is love for humanity and willingness to serve. We are trying at Brookside United Brethren Church to have a "real heart." We are trying to help people to know God and we are interested in the needs of people as many people outside and inside our church could testify.
We are interested in the "makers of our community" ___ those who live in the community, have places of business in the community, and who build up the community mentally, so- cially, spiritually and also financially. Sometimes a business man thinks that although he slams the church, church people ought to "fall over themselves" in trading with him. Both he and the church may be laboring under misunderstandings, but his attitude is not a winning one. We should realize as church people, that our patronage and support should go to those who are loyal hearted to the community. If your church would burn down, you would not go to Chicago to raise money but you would call on your own business men for help, and it would be a rare exception that any good business man would turn down any work for the common good. The Golden Rule is always useable and used in this consideration it means that it is our duty as church people to be for those who have been for us and who are helping the community of which we are a part. Reciprocity is the child of appreciation and gratitude, and flourishes only when the parties concerned understand each other. The church is dependent on its temporal side on the community and the community needs the church for moral at- mosphere, for ideals, for spiritual poise and for the Christ.
The true spirit of Brotherhood ought to prevail in our splendid community. If all live for God and each lives for the other, then all, whether Jew, Catholic or Protestant, can live together in the finest spirit of cooperation and good will. We believe that the church has a very important place in the com- munity. None of us would want to live in a churchless com- munity and yet as Theodore Roosevelt said: "The church is easy to slam and hard to replace. Kick it if you like, but you will be wiser and happier to back it." All do not agree as to the duties and responsibilities of a community church. We want the Brookside United Brethren Church to be a force for righteous- ness in our community as well as in the ends of the earth. Every movement that is for the betterment of our community ought to feel the lift of our people as individuals and count on us as a church to be on its side. We want the forces of evil to know that we are against evil and the more they know it the surer we are that our ideal is being reached.
"It does not require a big soul to criticize or ostracize. but it requires a big soul to sympathize."
