OUR LEAGUE BASKET BALL TEAM
Back Row-Slack, McCleery, Grove, Coach Ross, Bailey, Hol- lingsworth. Front Row-A. Kopp, Cullen, R. Kopp, Gilson, Wickes
Since Brookside United Brethren Church has a splendid gymnasium it should be expected to have a real athletic pro- gram during the fall and winter months. Last season all the young people and boys and girls were given opportunity to use the gymnasium and almost every period in the evening found some group playing.
The United Brethren League of the city played on twelve Tuesday nights and the tournament was won by the University Heights team with the Brookside team winning second honors.
There was also a church league composed of teams from the Young Married People's Class, Brookside Christian Build- ers, and the Minute Men. This league played on Saturday night.
A girls' team from the Loyal Daughters class played several games with other teams.
Primary and Junior boys and girls had the use of the gym- nasium after school hours on certain days of the week. Inter- mediate classes had play periods in the evening.
Every group had a chance to play and the recreational program at Brookside Church helped many boys and girls and young people to find recreation and wholesome fellowship.
A banquet was held at the close of the season with the United Brethren City League teams and the Brookside Church League teams as guests.

THE GIRL AND BOY SCOUTS
We are glad that Girl Scout Troop No. 39 and Boy Scout Troop No. 41 have their headquarters in the Scout room of Brookside United Brethren Church. The Scout movement is a world movement and is a builder of democracy, patriotism and loyal public servants.
Girl Scout Troop 39
There are about forty girls in Troop 39 under the leader- ship of Captain Lelia Kennedy. These girls are energetic and purposeful. They take hikes, learn to swim, run errands, seek to be courteous and helpful. For two winters they have sup- ported an aged family by their own self-denials. About twen- ty of the girls learned to swim last summer.
Boy Scout Troop 41
Troop Committee-Forest A. Reed, H. W. Johnson, C. B. Murphy, Charles G. Mitchell.
Scoutmasters-Charles E. Noble, and Milton G. Reed.
Officers of Troop-Senior Patrol Leader, Charles Bowers; Patrol Leader of Silver Fox Patrol, Albert Hughes; Patrol Leader and Assistant of Flying Eagle Patrol, Robert Hendrick- son and James Keene; Troop Bugler, Millard Brown.
Report of Scoutmaster Reed :- "Boy Scout Troop 41 closes a very gratifying year in scouting. In the city rating system as adopted by all the city troops, we have been standard for the last official year ending June 1st and for this rating the troop is awarded a standard ribbon. The troop has been on eight hikes as required to qualify as standard. The troop en- tered first aid, signalling, and knot tying teams in the February District Rally. The troop also entered two boys in the June Athletic Meet in the 50-100-220 yard dashes. Scouts Albert Hughes and Marion Morris have advanced to Star Scouts. First Class Scouts, Lawrence Gaston, and Charles Bowers and Second Class Scout, Robert Hendrickson, have added their quota of merit badges during the year bringing the total above thirty. There are at present 16 registered, active scouts."
THE SCOUT OATH
On my honor I will do my best-
1. To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law;
2. To help other people at all times;
3. To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

WHAT WE READ BECOMES A PART OF US
Emerson in his great "Essay on Books" said: "There are books which take rank in our lives with parents and lovers and passionate experiences, so medicinal, so stringent, so revolu- tionary, so authoritative." Certainly we should daily read the Bible which is "given by inspiration and is profitable for doc- trine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works,": (II Timothy 3:16-17). and there are books and periodicals that should be read. A good book put into a boy's hands at a certain- hour, saves him for time and eternity. Another book of opposite character leaves the boy a skeptic and sends him through life a foe to man and a hater of God. Every home ought to have plenty of good reading ma- terial. Religious papers and magazines are of paramount im- portance.
THE RELIGIOUS TELESCOPE
This great Religious Journal for United Brethren people should be in all United Brethren homes. It is our "trade" paper. The Sunday School and Christian Endeavor helps are sp_endid. It tells what other churches are doing and challenges the readers to be better Christians. It costs only 4c a week or $2.00 a year. Give your subscription to the pastor and bless yourself and help him to reach the quota of 80 subscribers.
THE EVANGEL
The monthly missionary magazine ought to be read by all the women and girls of the church, and can be read with great interest and profit by the men and boys. It is full of inspira- tion and it costs but 50c a year.
.
"The Watchword" is a paper for the young people and is second to none, and "The Friend" is a most excellent paper for boys and girls. These papers and our Sunday School literature should be read by all our people.
Every official should secure the "Discipline" which gives the rules of our church. It costs 50c.
There are many good books that can be secured at a reason- able price and the pastor will be glad to loan books and to help you to secure the best books.

HELPS FOR YOUR PRAYER LIFE
A Child's Prayer:
"Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Bless Papa and Mamma and all my friends And help me to be good, For Jesus' sake. Amen."
Grace before Meals: "Our Father, we thank Thee for this food, Bless it to our good; Feed our souls on the Bread of Life, And help us in our daily life."
"Gracious Master, we thank Thee For these and all the benefits of life, Forgive our sins and failures And help us to do Thy will in Jesus' Name. Amen."
