INTRODUCTORY.
WE present. you herewith the first volume of the NEW ALBANY DIRECTORY. The canvass has been thorough, and we believe ac- curate ; the compilation of names careful and systematic. The Directory contains 5,434 names, which multiplied by four-the lowest multiple used by any publisher in the United States-will give an estimated population of 21,736.
* The lack of proper numbers for residences, over a large portion of the city, and the bad system of giving the same name to two and in several cases three streets, in as many different sections, has proven a source of much trouble to the compiler in his endeavor to locate citizens, and will prove as great an inconvenience to the seeker after information within these pages, and it can only be said in this connection that, under the circumstances, the best that could be done has been done.
The publisher does not claim for his work an absolute freedom from errors or omissions, but he has guarded against them carefully and to the best of his ability, and believes the book will give gen- eral satisfaction.
Mr. A. E. Sholes has had charge of the canvass, and as a partial recognition of his long and faithful services the Directory has been named SHOLES'S NEW ALBANY DIRECTORY, and will continue to be published in his name. Mr. Sholes has taken unusual interest in the publication of this volume; and in trying so diligently to satisfy himself, we have no doubt he has satisfied the public in this, the first issue of SHOLES'S NEW ALBANY DIRECTORY.
