The first election was held at Earl's Tavern, in r836, only 30 votes polled. First Justice of Peace was John Henderson, the first saw mill was huilt by Earl & Gilmore, in r849, run hy steam; the first Postmaster, John Henderson ; the first school-house was made of split logs, on Moon's farm; the first church, Methodist Episcopal, north of Lakeville, one mile. There are two churches in the township: Methodist Episcopal and Christian. First child born was George Linehack, November 9, 1834.

Stuckey on Section 19, r836; Menzo Wehster on Section 23, in 1834 ; David Soosomen came in 1841, on Section 19, and Jacob Chearhart in r845, on Section 30; Gideon Drapier, r832, on Section 3r. The first school-house was Stover's, on Section 28. The first church, Notre Dame, Catholic, on Section 36, Section 26; John and Peter Cripe on same Section in 1830; Peter and Jacoh Eaton on Section 13, in r831 ; Thomas Longley on Section ar, in r830; Evan Chalfaut on Section 3r, in 183r ; Wm. Smith on Section r4. John H. Smith, son of Carmon Smith, some say was the the oldest settler. Joshua Johnson came about r83r ; John C. Stutsman on Section 24, r832; Evan and Thomas B. Mr. Cline and Mr. Bennett were among the oldest settlers in this township, on the Anthony farm, | Joseph Myer on Section 14. Three or four families of the Zimmers were in before 1848, Anthony the former on Section 19, and the latter on Section 18. One Palmer was in quite early, 1842, also Albert, Adam Layman, Joseph Zeiger, Michael Smith, and Mr. Andrews settled some of them in the Yellow River county. The first school-house was huilt on the Bennett farm, the zd at Woodland. Allen Mead and Mr. Bennett were the first justices. The first law-suit was held in Mead's house suit concerning the shooting of a deer, - both parties heaten. There are four churches in the town Mr. Ratherford. Among the earlier emigrants to this region were Longley, Crow, Philip Mclellan, Strope, Crowell, Washhurn, Clugston and Levi Knowlton. Philip, Jacoh and John Marker arrived here about 20 years ago. Daniel B. HARRIS TOWNSHIP.
This township took its name from Jacob Harris of Ohio who came in 1830, and settled on Harris Prairie. His son-in-law Samuel Bell came with him. Adam Miller, a Baptist preacher, came in 1830 or 1; also, Adam Ringle and settled on section 15. The first settlers erected cabins on this prairie. David and Josephus Baldwin and family came in 1830. Joseph Buel and his son-in-law, Jacoh Myers, came in 1831, and settled on section 15; Arhogast Zaehnle came in 1831, settled on section Henry Augustine put in an appearance on section 15, in 1831; also, Jonathan Hartzel the
same year on the same section. Robert Kennedy arrived in 1833, and hunt his cahin on section 14; David Ringle and his sons, Samuel and Levi, came in 1833 or 4, and pitched their cabins on section 14. The first school-house was a log structure up near the grave-yard, and Robert Ken- nedy was one of the first teachers. The first church was the Presbyterian which stands in. the woods near Mr. Irvin's.

HARRIS TOWNSHIP.
This township took its name from Jacob Harris of Ohio who came in 1830, and settled on Harris | same year on the same section. Robert Kennedy arrived in 1833, and bunt his cabin on section Prairie. His son-in-law Samuel Bell came with him. Adam Miller, a Baptist preacher, came in 1830 14; David Ringle and his sons, Samuel and Levi, came in 1833 or 4, and pitched their cabins on section 14. The first school-house was a log structure up near the grave-yard, and Robert Kich- nelly was one of the few teachers. The first church was the Presbyterian which stands in the woods near Mr. Irvin's. or 1; also, Adam Ringle and settled on section 15. The first settlers erected cahins on this prairie. David and Josephus Baldwin and family came in 1830. Joseph Buel and his son-in-law, Lacoh Myeri, ende in 1631, wad settled on section 15 ; Arbogast Zachnle came in 1831, settled on section Henry Augustine put in an appearance on section 15, in 1831 ; also, Jonathan Hartzel the

MADISON TOWNSHIP.
Mr. Cline and Mr. Bennett were among the oldest settlers in this township, on the Anthony farm, | Joseph Myer on Section 14. Three or four families of the Zimmers were in before 1848, Anthony the former on Section 19, and the latter on Section 18. One Palmer was in quite early, 1842, also Mr. Ratherford. Among the earlier emigrants to this region were Longley, Crow, Philip Mclellan, Strope, Crowell, Washhurn, Clugston and Levi Knowlton. Philip, Jacob and John Marker arrived here about 20 years ago. Albert, Adam Layman, Joseph Zeiger, Michael Smith, and Mr. Andrews settled some of them in the Yellow River county. The first school-house was built on the Bennett farm, the ad at Woodland. Allen Mead and Mr. Bennett were the first justices. The first law-suit was held in Mead's house suit concerning the shooting of a deer, - both parties heaten. There are four churches in the town tion 34; Eli Leslie on Section 24; Christian Grose on Section 21 ; Adam Keifer on Section 23; I ship, Lutheran, Dutch Reformed, and Albrights.
