Jane Burgess, a native of England, to whom was born ten shildren. Becoming prominently identified with the Washingtonian Temperanca Movement, he moved, in 1841, to Pittsburgh, where he labored zeulously for the snuse of temperance. He was well known throughout the con- tinent of America, as one of the most noted and carnest temperance advocates of the day, and was imbued with every sentiment calculated to reseue and exalt fallen humanity. He continued in this noble work until his death, which occurred in Cleveland, Ohio. Tho subject of this sketch was the second in the family, and was born in Baltimore, Md., September 6, 1838 ; removed, in 1841, with his parents, to Pittsburgh, Penn., and in 1847, to Salem, Colmubiana Co., Ohio, where he grew to manhood and received a first-class literary and scientifio education. In 1860, he entered the office of Dr. B. W. Speer, of Salem, Ohio, remam- ing one year, when he went to Cleveland and continued his studies under Dr. M. L. Brooks, Chief Surgeon of the United States Marine Hospital, wbere be remained as student and resident physician until April, 1864, when he located in Angola. During his studies at the Marine Hospital, he attended lectures at the Cleveland Medicol Collego, graduating in the winter nf 1863. Here industry, learning, talent and genius secure the highest rewards of life. In a word, the true nobility-nature's rulers-come to the front in every walk of life, and the people recognize them. They make our laws, sbape our insti- tutions, and free the minds of the masses from the debris of ancient ignorance that would otherwise trammel intellectual development. In the gentleman whose name stands st the hond of this sketeb, men are forced to recognize a leader ; portly in gait, confident in step, large in stature, in him there is a sleepless activity, a restless energy, ever press- ing forward to the Amoriean's heaven-success. Hugh D. Wood, was born in Bainbridge, Chenango Co., N. Wood, and in 1873-74 he attended a general course of lectures at three different medical schools of New York. By the above, it will be seon that he has had a thorough education in every branch of his profession, but not contented with this, he is an indefatigable student, and by constant study and practice keeps well apace with the best medical minds of the age.
