POWERS, CALVIN. (Deceased.) Bounteous and numer- ous nre the blessings hestowed by Nature upon this locality, and hitherto they havo been conferred upon a community by whom they wore recog. nized and appreciated, whose energetic labors have developed its latent wealtb, and converted thousands of seres of wild lands into productive

farms. But most of our pioneero have passed sway, and their places are filled hy snother generation. Let us trust their successors may have inherited their many virtues, and that their lives will he marked by the same energy, industry and piety which charneterized the lives of their forefathers; and that the trials through which their ancestoro passed to secure the blessings of s free home, muy ever he held in grate- ful remembrance by them, inciting them to the accomplishment of good and noble deeds. Calvin Powers was one of Steuben's first settlers, and, us a consequence, had to endure the many privations so inseparable imm the life of a pioneer ; but, like ull his contemporaries, he came with a mind fully reconciled to the difficulties he was to encounter, and his purpose was to meet and overcome them. He was born in Farm- ington, Ontario Co., N. Y., March 5, 1808, and was the youngest in a fumily of five children viz., Stepheu A., Winn, Clark, Josiah aud Calvis Powers. His parents, Josiah and Hannah (Church ) Powers, were natives of Massachusetts, where they were married January 6, 1799, and immediately moved to Oncida Conoty, N. Y., and, in 1805, to Ontario County, of the same State, where Josish died five months after the birth of the subject of this sketch. Calvin's mother was again mar- ried, September 29, 1811, to George Jenks, by whom she had three children-Laura, Joanna and Goorge, her husband dying November 30. 1820. Here, in Ontario County, N Y., Calvin Powers grew to man- hood, receiving a fair education. He was married in Palmyra, N. Y., September 12, 1835, to Maria Emeline Corey, daughter of Ruhert and Elizabeth (Smith) Corey, natives of New York. Mrs. Powers was born in Cazenovia, N. Y , June 2, 1817. In the spring of 1836, he, with his brother Clark, came out to Steuben County, Isd., and, that summer, entered a large tract of land in York Township. They returned to New York, where Calvin remained until the early part of' 1837, when he, with his brothero Stephen and Winn, started overland witlı their families for Steuben County, Clark having come out a few months previous for the purpose of building a cabin on the lund entered. Stephen and Winn arrived at the cabin July 8, 1837, hut Calvin was detained on the road in Ohio hy the sickness of his wife, and did not arrive in York Township until the latter part of the month. He settled in the southwest part of the township, and there hegan the hsttle of life, in which he succeeded so well. He remmined where he first settled but a short time, moving to the southeast quarter of Section 29, in the same township, where the most of his life was spent. By his marriage were horn the following children-Alonzo, born August 6, 1836; Lorenzo, October 9, 1838, (died December 11, 1839); Harriet, September 30, 1840; Elizabeth, January 15, 1842; and George, September 30, 1844. Mrs. Powers died September 22, 1848. Mr. Powers was again mar- ried, April 6, 1851, at Pleasant Lake, Steuben Co., Ind., to Luey A. Gilbert, who was born is Loroin County, Ohio, July 4, 1829, to whom was born two children-Emma R., July 31, 1852, and Frank M., April 6, 1860. In April, 1877, Mr. Powers and family moved to Angola, where he died January 6, 1878, and was buried in the " Powers Ceme- tery," in York Township. The greater part of his life was spent in the vicinity of his final resting-place. It is unnecessary to state to those who are at all acquainted with the history of Steuben County, that he was prominently identified with its growth and development. Coming into it nearly half a century ago, he found an almost unbroken wilder- ness stretching around him. In the midst of this unbroken forest, he began tbe laborious task of founding a home, and the perseverance and industry he displayed in this undertuking, those who knew him need not be reminded of. " The Free Church," of York Township, stands as a monument to his zeal in the good cause, he and his brother Winn having been the leading spirits in the movement that gave the neigh- borhood an edifice of which all may well feel proud. In polities, he was a firm Democrat ; was a County Commissioner from 1844 to 1847, and held the same position from 1856 to 1859. He was a man of

large public spirit ; prudeut and frugal in his business affairs, yet henev- oleut, with heart and hands ever open to the needy, and for the support of charitable enterprises. In society, he was highly companiosable; in conversation, thoughtiul and witty ; at home alike in the circle of the old or young. Few persons at the close of life left a larger circle of friends than he. Though positive and outspoken, he was courteous and regard- ful of the feelings of others, always appearing to respect honest convie- tions, however different from his own. In religion, though connected with no church, he openly professed his faith in the wisdom, justice and merey of God. In his last sickness, he would often say : " I am trying to be patient ; it must all be for some good end that I am called to suffer." A few hours before his death, he said : " My sufferings sro almost over. I am just waiting for the last link to be broken, and I shull be free from pais " When asked how he felt about the future, he replied . " I do not know how I shall hold out ; but I do not feel in the least afraid." Thus passed uwuy a noble old man, amid tears of genuine sorrow, to rest with his fathers. He was a member of the Masonie Fra- ternity, and a warm temporanee advoente. By his death, the family lost a kind and cossiderate husband and father, society, s valued and respected member, and the poor, a friend in their udvercity. Calvin Powers, alike with all, was subject to mistake and error; and yet, as we follow him to the verge of the cliff that overhungs the unseen world, we look back upon a life of more than ordinary worth, rich in qualities fit to be remembered and imitated.
POWERS, CALVIN P. This gentleman was born in Allegany County, N. Y., January 19, 1833, and is the son of Winn and Betsy Powers, and the fourth in a family of seven children. His youth was spent in York Township, Steuben Co., Ind, whither he came with his parents when hut four yeurs old. He was married in Reading, Mich., January 1, 1860, to Nunoy Jane Clark, daughter of Horatio N. and Eliza ( Bailey) Clark, natives of New York State. Mrs. Powers was boru in Williams County, Ohio. September 23, 1840, and hy her mar- riage hus the following children : Lola A., born February 15, 1861 ; Mora A., August 10, 1864; Lila A., September 4, 1866, and Milo A., September 18, 1868. Mrs. Powers is a pleasant, affable lady, and makes her home bright and happy. " Put " Powers is one of the best farmers in York Township, and at his home every one will find an honest welcome. He is a quiet unassuming man ; of few words, but those are always to the point. He makes few promises, but those few he never breaks ; his word being too sacred to be trifled with. In every duty of a citizen he will be found lacking in none. Politically, a Demo- erat , in religion, liberal-he has hy his honesty and consistency gained the confidence and respect of a wide eirele of Steuben's hest citizens.
WOOD, THEODORE FRELINGHUYSEN, M.
D. The hardy growths of nature are those thut battle the storms, the fiercer the conflict, the more robust hecomes the trunk, and the deeper down do tho roots descend. Man is hut a part of nature. He who struggles with difficulties, und is inured to hardships from child- hood, is the atrosg growth-the successful man. Few professiosal men have the good fortune to win tho honest regard and confidence that Dr. T. F. Wood has gained among the people for miles surrounding the town of Metz. His grandfather, Wood, was a uative of Canada, of English parents, who moved to New York State, where he married, and raised his fumily. The Doctor's father, Joseph Wheeler Wood, was born in New York iu 1801, where he grew up aud was married, his wife dying shortly after the birth of a daughter, whom they called Martha. He was again married, to Miss Sarah Farnham, who was born in Cou- necticut, August 5, 1804, of Welsh origin, who hore him eight children, as follows: Warren, Alphonso, Elizabeth, Sarah, Phedima, Hugh D., Melvina, Theodore F. and Fredrick B. Wood. The Doctor was born in Bainbridge, Chenango Co., N. Y., June 2, 1840, and in 1843 his parents removed to Williams County, Ohio, and iu 1846, to De Kalb
County, Ind., whore his father died February 10, 18fil, his mother dying in the same county is 1859. After his father's death, he went to live with his brother-in-law, Dr. S. S. Stough (who was a practic- ing physician of De Kalb Cousty, and is now residing at Waterloo, Ind.), with whom he remained about seven years, durisg which time he attended the district school in the winter terms, " doing chores" before and after school for his hoard and tuition. He thos " hired out" as a farm hand for one year, and with the money thus obtained ho started to Hillsdale College, where he remained, off and on, four years, putting in his vacations at farming and teaching, devoting the proceeds in paying his way through college, which completed his literory and neientifio education. In the mean time, he put in every spare moment is the study of medicine, having resolved to become s physieinn, while a boy around the office of Dr. Stough. Alter leaving college, he devoted his entire time to the study of his chosen profession-under his brother, W. Alphonso Wood, of Metz-with the exception of teaching a few terms of school in winter. 1u tho winter of 1863-64, he sttended a course of lectures at Rush Medical College, Chicago, Ill., after which he began practicing at Metz, in connection with his brother, W. Alphonse, which partnership continued until 1865, when, his brother having moved to Angola, he remained at Metz and began in practice for him- self. In 1868-69, he attended a course of lectures at Charity Hospital Medical College, Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated the latter yesr, receiving his degree of M. D. In 1870, he spent a short time at Rush Medical College, Chicago, and in 1872-73, he attended a course of lectures in the different medieal schools of New York City and Phila- delphia. He was married in Angola April 12, 1863, to Miss Elizabeth Powers, daughter of Calvin and Maria E. Powers, nee Corey, natives of New York State, a history of whom will be found elsewhere in this work Mrs. Wood was born in Steuben County, Ind., Juouary Ifi, 1842, and was the fourth in the family, her mother dying when she wos a child. She has had three children by her marriage-Lillie (deceased ), Edua and Alphonso Calvin Wood. Mro. Wood is a woman of rare practical sense, plain and unaffected in her munners, kind and courteous to all whom she meets, muking them feel at home and welcome ; free from constraint and cold formality on the one hand, und utter negleet on the other. Such is the home over which she presides, a faith- ful, attentive wife, and a fosd, loving mother. Would there were more such homes, for there is nothing that exerts a better influence on the child and society ut large, or is more beneficial to all surrounding it, than a happy, well-regulated home. Dr. Wood is a member of the Stouben County Medieal Society, of which he has been President and Secretary several terws; is its present Treasurer and ono of the Board of Censors; a member of' the Northeast Indiunu Medieal Society, of which he has heen President, Vieo President und Treasurer, and is now one of the Censors ; is a member of the Williams County (Ohio) Medical Society ; the Indiana State Medical Seciety, and the American Medical Association Heis one of the Board of Censors in the Fort Wayne Medi- cal College ; belongs to the Masonie Fraternity, and I. O.O. F. Asa phyni- cian, Dr. Wood stands deservedly high, and his practice is umong the largest and most lucrativo in the enunty. Ile is an energetic worker and a close student; in the sick-room he is attentive, patient and kind, inspirisg the afflicted with a hopeful confidence in his ability to effect a speedy eure, which hope, in muny cases, is half the battle. The Doctor is a pleasant, affuhle gentleman, well informed on every leading topic, and imbued with a true, proctieal spirit of progress. He is entirely free from that overbearing importance and pompous manner that many professional men falecly imagine will dignily their calling ; is a fluent, ready speaker, expressing his opinions without feur or favor, iu a plain, blunt, practical manner that cannot fail to be understood, and by his straightforwardness and hosesty, has won the respect of his competitors, and the confidence of the community in which he lives.
