Stealing ponies, howerer, while it might have been profitable for those engaged in it, was an occupation that had its risks and dangers. The Indianslearned to keep a closer watch over their property ; andi thongs it is doubted by some whether they ever discovered the mysterious traps, yet the gang in seve- I'ni occasiony were closely persned, and narrowly escaped with their lives. One of thein, Wicks by name, had lived among the Indians a large part of his life, and having adopted their dress and halts, was hardly listinguishable from one of the tribe. About 1410, he disappeared mysteriously, and it has always been supposed met with summary retribution at their hands,
This band of quay thieves had their head-quarters in a hut on the form now owned by Lewis bailey in Section 20.
Tudian ponies in those days were worth frina fifteen to twenty dollars each, Though much too fight for farm work, they were vriy tough and hardly, and from the searcity of better aumnals wire often maisde use of hy the settlers.

Mr. Morrow parted with these specimens, and as the excavation had been made for the purpose of getting water for his stock, no further search way made for other parts of the mistodon.
To what strange queies of annnal these teeth belonged, no opinion is ventured, that ollice being left to the scientist. It is certain that tio such creatures are now found upon the earth, and the occasional discovery of skeletons more or less incum- Idete is the inity evidener we have that they ever existed.
North Manchester .- This important and thriving towu bas a must beautiful natural location, being situated on a level plain elevateit sinne thirty feet above Bel River. The first town plat was laid out in 1837 by Peter Ogan and William Nett. A saw-mill, and soon afterward a grist-uall were built, while a store and tavern were soon in operation.
For many years merchandise and surplus prisluets of this Hace were received and shipped from La Gro by canal or rail. Thu, freight had to be hauled in wagons, and a plunk road was built to facilitate transportation.
In Isil, the efforts that had been made for an many years to secure railroad facilities were at last crowned with snecess; and almost at the same time, hoth the Detroit. Eel River, ami Illinois Railroad, and the Cincinnati, Walsh, and Michigan Railroad were put in operation ; and thus by opening up rendy and cheap facilities for travel and transportation the town began to improve rapidly. Population increased, buildings were put ap ; und in a short time the place had more than doulded in sizeand importance. It has, at present, two newspapers, three hotels, one bank, three hardware stores, a lumber yard. planing mills, several saw and grist-mills, hub and spoke works; besides the usnal variety of dry goods, grocery, boot and shoe, drog, and furniture stores, which have a large and inerensing trade. In addition to the railroad facilities at present enjoyed, efforts are being made to make the town a point on other lines.
Liberty Mills. - This village was founded by Judge Comstock, in 1837, who built a saw- nud grist-mill about this time. It is situated on the east hnal of Eel River, and is a station on the Detroit, Eel River, and Illinois Rattroud. The village has a considerable trade, having a number of establishinents iloing o general trade in dry goods, groceries, etc., the most prominent among them being Dr. Benksand Robert Carson. A con-nder- able part of the trade here comes froot Kosciusko County.
LA GRO TOWNSHIP.
For some time previous to the organization of Wabash Co. La Gro was a township of Huntington Co., and long before Huntington County had an existence the Indian village of La Gro, or Les Gros, as they then spelled it, was known to the voyageurs, the Freneb missionaries, and the early English traders. At the treaty held by General Casa, on the Wabash, in 3426, it was stipulated, among other matters, that a sub- stuntial brick house should be built there for the chief of that anine, and this was accordingly ilone in 1928, Moses Seott being the bnibler. The brick for the purpose were burned on the ground, and the building is still standing, in a very good state of preservation. It was unplastered, and contained two rooms and a fireplace. In this the old chief lived and died ; and he now lies Imried in a valley to the north of it, near the corner of the Odd Fellows' Cemetery. His death touk place about 1831.
The first white man who lived in the village for any length of time was probaldly one Lewis Rogers, an Halian trader; who moved into the house oernpied by La Gro soon after his death. Ilere he trul his stock of trifling trinkets-much more highly prizel by the Indians than money-heplayed in the end of one of the rooms, and the usual barrel of whiskey in one corner. Such way the Indian trader's usual stock at that day, nor lins it ever materially changed.
In the spring or summer of 1832 Robert MeCture came to the jdace and put up the first log cabin, which was located near where the east end of the sailrundt trestle over Izat tiro Creek now 14. He cultivated the open piere of ground which had formerly been In tiro's cornfield, comprising an extent of about ton neres. C'hampion Helvey settled near by soon after- wandy, and these three families constituted the La tter settle- ment in the fall of 1832, when William T. Rowe, in company with fifteen others under Capt. Johan It. News, passed through in their way to a point tom miles west of Rochester to guard the government storey there. They supplied themselves mainly by ushing nt that time, having a fish-trap in the Wabash River nene where the freder dam is at present,
In 1944, when work cummethod on the Wales and Erio Canni, a large number of persons settled there, along the line of the ranal, though hat few of them emme there to stay The following ore the names of the settlers during and up to that tunc, so far ay known !---
