HISTORY OF WABASH COUNTY BY TOWNSHIP'S,- - CHESTER - LA GRO.
(Contond from page 1%)
Kel Giver. Helvey had previously lived in La Gro, where he bad kept tavern in the brick house bandlt by the government for the Inthian chief of that name. He afterward hi pt tavern in North Manchester.
Peter Dgan, who is still living in the State, also came in Isit, and Imult him n valun im the north Jenek of Eel laver. near where the post office is now located. John Ogan settled about the same time on the south sale of the nter, int far from the present village of Manchester. Peter Ogan land ont the original town plat of the village in 1997. Agrist-hill and a saw mill were put in operation there at about this time. .
James Abbott entered the land where the village of Liberty Mills now stands, in isda, atul moved on to it the following year. In to ad, he sold out to I. In Constunk, who still re-ides there. Two of Abbott's sons who necumpemnied him when he came to the comtry are still living in the township.
John Sinonton come in 1935. He came ap Eel River in a boat, landing at the site of the present village of North Man- chester, on the first day of Vetoleer of that year, and settle.1 on Section So on the farm where Frederick Naher now lives. Ilis son John moved to Section 35 m Town. 30, where he still residles.
At this time there were no mills bearer than in Elkhart County, and is tonk three days to make the trip. Simonton and Abbott got an Indian guide to show their the way, and with the assistance of their stalwart sons spent a verk in eutring out a rua borthward through the woods to the mills. After reaching Turkey Creek prairie the severest in' their labors were over.
Among the other earlier settlers were ,faeuh Harter, who settled in North Manchester in 1-34, and John l'omstock. The latter vame on the 20th of June, 1 -36, to Liberty Mills. During the first season he only cleared a quarter of an acre, but on the following spring began a mill-race, and on Jannary Ist. 1838, bal a saw-mill in operation. This mill was destroyed by fire the following. April, but was immediately rebuilt. In 1539, a grist-mill was put in operation. He bought corn ou Turkey Creek praine and sold the meal at the mill,
Curtis l'auling. settled in Pleasant Township in 1937, and moved to North Manchester in 1:39, where he lupt store for many years .- He afterwards removed to Section Is, where be Dow residles .. Me. Pauling is one of the lending citizens of the township and also of the county. having sera ntuch of the world in general, and being universally respected for his sound jurigment and personal worth.
Oee of the first settlers outside of the immediate neighbor- bood of Eel River was Peyton Daniels, who came from Fay- ette County in 1837. At the time of his arrival there was but one house between his, which was on Section 23, and the vil- lage of La Gro He died December, 1874, aged seventy-seven years.
Other Early Settlers .- Among the other early settlers may be mentionel Josiah Pratt, Judm Shanahan, A. II. Simpson, Lewis J. Lanz. G. W. Richards, Charles Fudger, George Grief- baugh. Lot Harris, Rudolf Crisher, John Brindle, Andly Fins- hour, Joe Singer, and William and Themons Thetn.
Mail Traces Road .- This roul extends from Liberty Mills to I.n Gro, and is noted as passing through a very fine country, much of that part in Chester Township owned by that thrifty seet known as ferman Baptists, popularly nicknamed " Punk- arts." The rond derives its name from the fact that at sa early day it was near the site of an Indian trail, along which Jolin Simonton carried the mall from Liberty Mills in North Manchester. Ile " want it afoot and alone," and it took him two days to make the round trip.
The road was " brushed ont" some time prior to 1939, hut not cleared of lurgre timhur autil 1 >44, when it was ent out by the volunteer labois of those pioneers alung its cuprar.
Land Sates .- The land in this township was not subject to entry by pre-emption, but was sold at public sale, and in this way much of it fell into the handy of speculatory.
At the varions sales. in order to prevent this, the settlers resorted to various pretexte, anine of them perlen not strictly honest. One of them was to atletel the sale in a horly, and when the land was offered, eun ap the price In a figure lugter than the spectator dare offer, whether they had any intention of buying or ind. Though, in the lathy case, the land way get up again the following day. another would agent the prime until the spectator herame disesgrated and waldrew, he often being nualde to distinguish between a bona fide hid and one Tande piciy to worry Jim.
Sometimes rhyilde tracts romaned withont an owner, par- tirs often feating to perchas. latsd they had aut soru, atel in this way some pires exped attention. An incelen may be related to show how these were sometimes cutered. Mr. James Ridgely, passing through the southernst part of the town ship, discovered that part of See 30 (Town. 25. Rouge 3) was good latel, and hendl sover been efterel.
While looking at the land, another party just in les appear. aw'e with design apon it ulan, ant & berame chen tour-tion Ds to which of them could get to 'hir duul offiez :4. Fort Wayne In the shortest bitaw, The niranger wos afont, att wetting ine pocket compass took a beer-bus for its thatmatom. Mr. Refgady, being imounted, struck down to the Low-truth of the Canal, a more citrunous sunte ; but was fortunate enough to
reach the land office at Fort Wayne about half an hour in alsanee. He afterwards returned to Montgomery County, Ohio, from which point bor wet ont for his near tonie in the finest, where he arrived in September, Ist, bringing with him about a year's surdy of provisions. He found the little hut he had previously built used as a sort of stalde by the hipban ponies. Paring the winter following he occupied hunell' in vlenting upa patch on which to raise rorn the following year "I be top of the fallen trees served as a " browse" for the cattle and horses, and were about all they had to live on nutil grass came in the spring.
Chester Township has long been ranked as one of the fore- must in the conuty not only in the quality of soil, bout in the enterprise of its inhalatants as shown by sufestantial farm inmovements. A large tract of land lying in the southeast part of the township was returned as swamp land, and for many years was entled the " Bear Swamp," and supposed by many to have no agricultural value. But it was taken np hy an industrions and thrifty population mostly of tierman lurth, and through their labors in clearing and draining, it is taking a high rank as one of the best and richest spots in the township.
Pony Creek .- This stream is called hy different names. Near Manchester, where it empties into Eel River, and for several miles shove, it is best known as Ogan Creek, deriving this name from Julin Ogan, who was one of the very first settlers in the township, and built a cabin on its banks in 1834. Further op, and from thenee to its source, it has the name of Pony Creek, by which title it is designated on the maps.
Tradition tells how it received this name, ond the legend seemed worthy of a place in this work.
Years and years ago, at the time when the first pioneers had just begun to penetrate this region, and white settlers were few and far between, while the dusky Miamis hunted the deer through the forest-covered lands of Chester and adjacent towa- ships. a band of white desperadoes organized ami carriedl ont n plan of stealing their ponies, which evinced much ingenuity ; and for a time was very successful.
In the central part of the township extending through See- tions 23 nud 24 in Range 7, and Sections 19 and 20 in Range S. there was a strip of land known as the " Windbrake" in winch all the trees had been blown down by n tornado some years before. au bere among the young timber that had sprung up since, vegetation was more luxuriant than in the surround- ing forest. To this spot, the Indian ponies when turned loose were wont to find their way.
Taking advantage of this eireumstanee, these renegades construeted n trap or pound, with o converging lane le:uling to it, which was so placed as to intercept the trail taken by the pontes on their way to the " Windbrake." Entering the lane, it was an easy matter for them to find their way into the inelo- sure through its narrow opening, but once fairly inside they could not ienlily escape. From here they were taken by the gang, who ran these off to the northward until they came to the ervek, half a mile above, and near the county line. They followel down the bed of the stream "to break the trail," and so elurle pursuit. Keeping the ereek for about a mile andl a halt, and reaching Seet. 19, they secreted their stolen property in a pea on the farm now belonging to Warren Jenks. This pen, like the former, was strongly built, being about eighteen rails high, and inel-el an aren of nearly two neres. When a sutli- vient number of ponies had been brought together in this way. and a favorable opportunity occurred, they were then run off to some remote locality and there disposed of.
