LAUNDER & HARTER,
MANUFACTUNNNS OF Fine Carriages, Open and Top Buggies, Spring Wagons, Track Wagons, Sulkies, etc.
A large and well assorted stoek always on exhibition at our Repository on MARKET STREET. All styles of vehicles built to order, and all work warranted in every respect for one year.
We make a specialty of Miller's Eureka and Steadman's Patent Two-bow Top. We have adhered strictly to the use of first-class material, and the increase in our trade from year to year encourages us to build only No. I work in the future. The superior quality, extra fine finish, and remarkable endurance of our work must and shall be its greatest recommendations.
NOTE .- Not having room enough in our present quarters, we have purchased ground across the Canal, and are now making preparations for building a more com- modious factory there on the plan shown in the above engraving.

HISTORY OF WABASH COUNTY .- PERSONAL SKETCHES, ETC.
(Continued from page 57.)
CHRIS. EGY
Was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, in the year 1831 Itis parents, John and Mary Eby. were natives of that locality, having been bary and raised there. John Ehy was one of a family of six children, four of whom are now hivmg
Mr. Chris Eby first came to this county with his parents in IS11, having spent the previous ten years in Dhin. The yrats uf 1852 mmd '53 be spent in California. nad soon atter his return was married (in November, 1935), to a lady in Kosciusko County, In- diana. They have four chundren, whose names are as follows : Anna Eby, Frank W. Eby. Samuel E. Khy, Paisy E. Eby.
Mr. Chris. Eby is one of the largest Innstow ners in this county, and the possessar of a most beautiful country home, which once scen is not soon forgotten. A line sketch of the place is given ou another page of this work.
MR. O. S. FERREE.
Among the most prominent citizens of Somerset stands Mr. O. S. Ferree, who has been during the last four years engaged in the drug business in that place. Mr. Ferree was born in Rush County in this State, and came to this county first in 1så6. In 1870 he opened a drug store in Somerset where he has built up a flourishing trade, and at the satoc time gained the admi- ration and esteem of all his fellow-citizens.
SCALE OF THE MAPS.
The township maps in this work are drawn on a uniform acale of two inches to the mile, or forty chains to the inch. Each sixteenth of an inch on the maps, therefore, represents ten rods of ground. As each quarter-section is one hundred sod sixty rods in length, a strip one rod in width will make one acre, ten rods len acres, and so on. With a little care noy one can make such changes in the maps as may be necessary from year to year.
IN CONCLUSION.
Having sketelied with some fulness the various ineulents of the county's history, and spoken of its natural characteristics, it remains for the writer to say a parting word.
The achievement of sulnjuing a forest or "entting & country out of the woods," as some have expressed it, has been acrom- plished. The trials, hardships, and labors incident to a pioneer life have been performed by a generation now passing away. Many of them, indeed, fell by the wayside, and laid them down to ilie ere the task was half accomplished. With those that remained, their hair is whitening, their cheeky growing furrowed, and their steps tottering, but their eyes still glisten as they recount in striking words and homely phrases the stir- ring scenes of border life.
Old men, and truel May your remaining days be made bapry by the kind offices of grateful descendants, aml when at last, wearied with life's cares and contliets, you sink to rest, may your memory ever be revered hy posterity.
But though these men did so much, though the achievements of the past forty years have been so great, who can set bounds to what is yet to be accomplished in the future? Already three-quarters of the nineteenth century are gone, and yet what may not be done ere the twentieth dawns ? New ocen- sions bring new duties, and the generation now entering the stage of action cannot afford to rest on the laurels their fathers bave wou. They would prove uuworthy sons of noble sires.
Small a space as thia little community fills on thio map of the globe, it is not too small to make itself felt in the coming years.
That its sons and daughters may make the most of the advantages which the sturdy pioneers have won with the labors of their lifetimes, it is necessary that they should follow honored and peaceful porsuits, ever shonning idleness and evil, and by striving to be good and to become better, live such lives that the world may be the better for their having lived.
BUSINESS NOTICES. THE OLD RELIABLE MARBLE WORKS.
Among the enterprising mumfactories of Wabash County we must not amit to mention the rytensive mmerhte works uf Mevars. Ily & Neo, situated at the corner of Main and Wabash streets. These gentlemen have been located here geer sare 1-15, and their trade his been steadily growing antd now, in amount and character of work produced, they are the leading establishment of the kind in the county. One reason is the superior quality of their work, bath of the firm being prartient men and understand- ing their business in all the various branches, and keeping them- selves fully posted in all the improvements and novelties. Messrs. Ply & Nye are rapaide and courteous business men, and have fairly won the confidence they enjoy.

FARM RESIDENCE OF ALONZO MASON SEC 22 T 27. R.7 LA GRO TP .. WABASH CO. INDIANA
WARREN AND ALONZO MASON.
WARREN and ALONZO MASON, whose residences are pictured above, and who live on farms adjoining each other in La Gro Township, trace their ancestry back, in one unbroken line, to one Sampson Mason, who was a soldier or dragoonman in the republican army of Oliver Cromwell, in 1642. From the few items of butory :has can be gatnered regar ling him, ho in all probability belonged to the famous " Irousules" regiment of cavalry which performed such prodigies of valor at the battle of Marston Moors, fought in 1641.
Sampson Mason came to this country about the year 1650, and settled in the early Pari- Lau town of Rehoboth. On account of his Baptist principles, we find it recordled that be was only allowed the privileges of a sojourner there though, in course of time, he became une of the foundera of the township of Swanzey south of Rehoboth, where the religious profes- sion of a Baptist-eveu at that day of per ccution for conscience-sake-did not debar any one from the enjoyment of civil rights. His wife, the mother of this branch of tho Mayon family, was Mary Butterworth, also a native of England. They raised a family of thirteen children.
Warren and Alonzo Mason belong to the seventh generation of the children of Stephen Mason, the aollier who fought under Cromwell. Their father, Horatio Mason, was born in 1797, in Fairfield, Herkimer Co., New York. He roarrval Amsha P'ernu, who was a year younger than himself, in Connersville, Ind., July 24tb, 1619. She was a native of Adams, LFLshire Co., Massachuset.s. Their children were: Mahala Mason, born March 19th, 1821 ; Waren Mason, boro April 11th, 1823; Alonzo Maron, born Nov. 13th, 1824; Amelio .. . . born U -. 1ch 1826. Warren Malon, the oldest son of Horatio Masou, was mar.
ried to Mary Hauley, March 2, 1845. They have had seven children, but two of whom are living, Oliver HI. Mason, boro Oct. 2Ist, 1857, Owen W. Mason, born Sept. 20th, 1865 Alonzo Mason, the second son of lloratio Mason, was married to Elizabeth Greeu, Septem ber Ilth, 1815. They bad five children, all of whom are living, viz,, Charlotte Mason, hora Aug. 15th, 1816; Albert Mason, boro Deo. 30th, 1548; Ernost Mason, born March 2d, 1851; Lawrence Moson, boro Aug. 22d, 1853; Marietta Mason, born Joue 4tb, 1863. Alouzo Mason came to this county in 1851, and Warren in 1853. Both are enterprising citrzons, model farmers, and ansong tho foremost men of the county. They are atauoch Republicana, and though never cecking office, have held many publie positions of responsibility and trust. Warren is now President of the New Holland Turnpike Company, and owns in that corpo- rution more than double tho stock controlled by any other member. Alonzo hus filled the trying and responsible office of County Coromissioner, and both have been County Real Extato Appraisers.
Alonzo Mason joined tho Christian church in bia youthful daya, and bas ever been a consistent member of that denomination; while Warren, though uot an active member of auy religious organization, has over thrown bis influence on the side of education, virt.1o, nud morality. Every worthy publio enterprise hay aiways found in thein most gongrons supporters. If moro than an ordinary success has been attained by them in the affairs of Life, and the accumulation of property, it furnishes to tho young men of the rising genera- tion a worthy example of what may be accomplished by earnest, energetic, and persovoring Inbore, quod management, atul a strict regard for the riguts and privileany of others.
