TAX DUPLICATE OF ISII.
In a little paper-covered volume of eleven pages is recorded the four hundred and sixty-seven taxpayers of Franklin county for 18II, the first year of its existence. They are listed for taxation in alphabetical order, their names being followed by the number of slaves and horses which they own, these being the only two kinds of property listed for taxation. Only three slaves were returned, one belonging to John Hall and two to James James. However, there were other people in the county who held slaves, although they may have called them bond servants. There were a total of eight hundred fifty-one horses listed for taxation, but the duplicate does not state the rate at which slaves and horses were taxed.
