TOWNSHIP HISTORIES.
INTRODUCTION
IN this department of our work. it is the purpose not to generalize, as in the 1. branch devoted to the presentation and discussion of the facts of local his. tory as they apply to the emody, as a whole, but to individualize, so to speak, confining ourselves, in the narrations to be made sonder this head, to the con- sideration of character, facts and incident- which belong especially to the sulmy- dinate divisions of the county, to neighborhood-, families and individuals. in their local relation exclusively, as coming within the range of adaptation to personal preferencer. This method is the more natural, since, in the early days of' our pioneer history, there were no immediate bendavies circumscribing our homes and settlements making ns especially inhabitants of a merely kowal juris- diction. We were five, ametable to the law- of our country as a nation, and In the great principles of inherent liberty and right, accepting the limit of fre- dlem to be the rarreise of personal prerogatives not in conflict with the rights uf others.
