MeCracken, Oral Markus, was born Dec. 27, 1896. He entered the service at Terre Haute in August, 1918, and was discharged Dec. 17, 1918. He was in training at the Indianapolis Technical School,


McCray, Clarence (55), son of Robert and Sarah MeCray, was born in Kentucky Aug. 21, 1898. Ile entered the army Sept. 26, 1918, and was sent from Kokomo, Ind., to Camp Custer, Mich., where he was assigned to Co. B, 418th Reserve Labor Brigade, Q. M. C.

MeDaniel, Nolen Emison (39), son of Mitchel and Lon Hobson McDaniel, was born in Russiaville, Ind., Dec. 31, 1892. After graduating from the New London High School, he at- tended Indiana University two years and the University of Colorado one year. lle was mar- ried Jan. 13, 1917, at Quiney, Ill., to Effie May Green. As soon as war was declared in April, 1917, he tried to enlist but was rejected. However, when the draft law went into operation, be was accepted at Quiney, Ill., and sent to Camp Dodge, lowa, in September, 1917. He was promoted to corporal and sent overseas in August, 1918, with Co. A, 337th Machine Gun Battalion, Eighty-eighth Division. Ilis contingent was not included in the sailing list until after midsummer, 1919.


McCreary, Virgil Roscoe (95), son of Alex. and Sarah Smith MeCreary, was born in Clinton Co., Ind., Oct. 5, 1897. He enlisted at Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 10, 1937, and five days after he was mustered into service at Fort Thomas, Ky., he was sent to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., where he remained five months. With the exception of time spent in drilling he drove a motor truck. Immediately after his arrival at Camp Merritt, N. J., he was sent to the hospital with the mumps. Upon his recovery, three weeks later, he was assigned to the 212th Casual Co., which sailed for France June 14, 1918. Seven days later he landed at Southampton, Eng- land, and immediately he crossed the channel to France. lle went then to the following piaces: Blois, Chanmont, Chatillion-sur-Seine, Recey-sur-Orce. At the last place he rejoined his old company, the Forty-second Field Hospital No. 48, which then had the care of the Ninetieth Division for four months. On Oct. 23, 1918, his company was transferred to the Argonne sector and located on the Mouse-Argonne front. After the armistice, he moved Nov. 13, 1918, to a German evaenation hospital, which was used as a sterilizing plant. On Dec. 7, 1918, he moved to Monteau (Yonne) and took charge of Camp Hospital No. 67. He left for Brest. France, March 18, 1919, and on April 7, 1919, he embarked on the German ship "Graf Waldersee," which reached New York April 20, 1919. After staying at Camp Dix, N. J., ten days, his unit was demobilized and sent to various camps to be discharged. On May 6, 1919, he received his discharge at Camp Sherman, Ohio.


McDonald, Donald (McBonel, Donel), son of Thomas and Rosa Knotts AleDonald, was born in Elwood, Ind., July 2, 1900. Ilis wife is Mae Inllinger MeDonald. On Aug. 29, 1917, after he had enlisted in Co. E, he was sent to guard munition plants in the Calumet district of northern Indiana. He was transferred to the 243rd Casual Co. and with them served overseas. llis last assignment was with Co. L, Fifty-ninth Infantry, Fourth Division. On April 16, 1919. his discharge papers were issued at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky.


McDonald, Earl Ernest (70), son of Aaron and Sevilla Geeting MeDonald, was born near Galveston, Ind., Oct. 18, 1800. He graduated from high school in 1911. On April 17, 1917, he was sworn in at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, just a few days after America entered the war. Throughout his enlistment he served with Co. B. Thirty-sixth Infantry, and was in training at the following places: Fort Clark, Texas; Debrio, Texas; Fort Snelling, Ming .; Camp Devens, Mass .; and Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. lle was discharged at the last camp March 14, 1919, after serving as supply sergeant one year.


McDonald, Mark L. (71), son of AAaron and Sevilla Geeting McDonald, was born in Howard Co., Ind., Feb. 11, 1893. He attended high school two years. Ou Oct. 5, 1917, he went to Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., where he was a member of Bat. D, 335th F. A. On Nov. 12, 1917, he was ordered to Camp Shelby, Miss .. and assigned to Co. 1, 152nd Infantry. He set sail for France Oet. 5, 1918, and upon his arrivat overseas, he became a member of Co. B. 307th Infantry, Seventy-seventh Division. Ile was discharged May 22, 1919.


MeDowell, Guy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin MeDowell, was born Dee. 18, 1856. He was in the army from Sept. 21, 1917, to Dec. 9, 1918, and while at Hattiesburg. Miss., he was assigned to the headquarters company of the 152nd Infantry. At the time of his discharge he was at- tached to Co. E, Development Battalion.


McDonnell, Charles P. (29)), son of Frank and Bella Record MeDonnell, was born in Ko- komo, Ind., July 10, 159S. Ile had the honor of sailing on the first transport taking soldiers to France, and it is probable that he was the first Howard County soldier to reach France with the American Expeditionary Forces. He had been with Gen. Pershing on the Mexican Border since his enlistment at Indianapolis, Sept. 1, 1915, and was promoted to corporal of Bat. C, Sixth F. A. He was a member of the First Division and took part in the battles of Verdun, Soissons and Chateau Thierry. He was on the hring line the greater part of the time from October, 1917, until November, 1918. At one time he was a member of the battery that fired the first shot at the enemy in October, 1917, in the Luneville sector. He arrived in Kokomo Sept. 29, 1919, from Baltimore, Md.


McEntee, William Joseph, son of James and Mary Murray MeEntee, was born in Rush Co., Ind., April 20, 1891. He entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., April 26. 1915, and after train-

Ing at Camp Zachary Taylor with Co. D. 112th Ammunition Train, Thirty-seventh Division, be was sent to France. He had more than six months of active service and was stationed part of the time at Ambly, France.


MeEntee, Ross.


MeEwan, Neil Duncan, was born April 13, 1895. Ile enlisted in the army at Helena, Mont., July 16. 19I7, and was discharged Feb. 14. 1919.


MeFarland, A. Harold, was promoted to sergeant in Co. E, and after training at Camp Shelby, Miss., he went to France with the 152nd Infantry in October, 1918.


MeGail, Herschel .A. MeGarvey, Carl K.


MeGaw, Charles Edward (3), son of William L. and Bettie II. MeGaw, was born in Bel Air, Md., March 14, 1895. He graduated from the Kokomo High School in 1915. When he enlisted at Fort Benjamin Harrison in April, 1917, he was rejected on account of heart trouble and under weight. He volunteered to go in the draft of Oct. 5, 1917, to Camp Zachary Taylor, and was accepted and promoted to corporal of Bat. E, 325th F. A., Eighty-fourth Division. Ile went to France about October, 1918, and returned to receive his discharge March 1, 1919.


McGinnis, Charles Ross, was born at Medaryville, Ind. He was twenty-one years old at the time he was sent to the S. A. T. C. at the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. Ilis dis- charge was dated Dee. 17, 1918.


MeGowan, Andrew J., enlisted in the army Sept. 4, 1917, and left Camp Dix, N. J .. for England with the Eighteenth Co., Fifth Battalion, 153rd Depot Brigade, Thirty-fourth Division.


Melfale, Thomas Patrick (41), son of Martin and Catherine Mellale, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Sept. 28, 1803. Ile was one of the company of men who left Kokomo, Ind., April 3, 1918, for Fort Hamilton, N. Y. He was appointed wagoner of Bat. D, Seventieth Regiment, Coast Artillery Corps. After the organization of his contingent, he was moved to Fort Wads- worth, N. Y., and thence to France on July 14, 1918, on the U. S. SS. "Great Northern." On July 22, he arrived at Brest and was encamped at La Membrolle for the organization and training school No. 4, Angers, France, in which artillery truck driving was taught. Ile left France on the "Manchuria" Feb. 12. 1919, and landed at Hoboken, N. J., Feb. 22, 1919. Ile received his discharge March 12, 1919, at Camp Sherman, Ohio.


Mellrath, Arnold, son of Henry and Florence Morris Mellrath, was born at Russiaville, Ind., May 3, 18SS. le enlisted in the navy at Indianapolis, Ind,, June 28, 1918, and was re- lieved from active duty Feb. 10, 1919. From July 1 to Oct. 18, 1918, he was on duty at New- port, R. 1 .; then he was transferred to the officers' material school, ordered to New York, and after an eight weeks' course he passed the examinations successfully Jan. 27, 1919. For some time he was a cadet on the U. S. SS. "Joseph R. Parrott," Key West, Fla.


Mellrath, John Morris (13).


MeInfurf, Lloyd Irving (S), son of Samuel F. and Laura Bryan Melnturf, was born in Jerome, Ind .. Dec. 19, 1896. In 1914 he graduated from the high school in Kokomo, Ind. ITe enlisted in the navy at Indianapolis, Ind., Ang. 23, 1917, and at Norfolk, Va., passed the examinations in radio work and was sent to Harvard University for four months, after which he became a second class radio operator. Then he received instructions to take charge of nine men and three ships from Duluth, Minn., to the Atlantic coast. In June, 1918, when he went to France, he became a first class radio operator. An opportunity came in March, 1919. for him to go with supplies to Poland, and on this trip he went by way of Holland, the Kiel Canal and Danzig, Germany.


MeKay, Charles Odell (79). son of Cyrns J and Ella E. MeKay, was born May 26, 187G. at Hemlock, Howard Co., Ind. His wife is Mary Pearl Piatt MeKay. Ou May 13, 1599, he enlisted in the Spanish American War and left Indianapolis for the Presidio, San Francisco, Calif. On July 31 he embarked for Manila, P. I., and arrived at Fort Santiago, P. 1., Sept. 3. He was promoted to corporal and then to sergeant of Co. L, Twentieth U. S. Infantry. 'The chief battle in which he was engaged while on the islands was at Toba, Batangas Province, Dec. 7-8-9, 1901. In March, 1902, he came to Fort Sheridan, Ill., and was discharged there May 12, 1902. At Columbus Barracks, Ohio, Oct. 2, 1908, he re-enlisted and was given a special assignment with the Thirty-sixth Coast Artillery Corps: then he was transferred to the 144th Co., C. A. C., at Moultrieville, S. C., where be served as chief observer. In Feb- ruary, 1911, his contingent was sent to the Mexican Border and mobilized as infantry, but on Oct. 1, 1911, he was returned to Moultrieville and given a discharge. In the World War he was in the eall of Oct. 11, 1918, but on account of influenza his departure was delayed until

Nov. 11, 1918, when he left for Spartanburg, S. C., with the last company of men who left Kokomo, Ind., on the day the armistice was signed. He was discharged on Nov. 12, 1918.


MeKay, Norvin Panl (4), son of Charles D. and Jessie Louise Mckay, was born in Howard Co., Ind., Feb. 29, 1896. lle is a graduate of the high school at Russiaville, Ind., and at the time of his enlistment in November. 1917, he was a senior at the American School of Osteopathy, Kirksville, Mo. Ile went from this place to St. Louis, Mo., and then to the Great Lakes Training School, but was transferred to the radio school at Harvard University. After spending a few weeks at the Wakefield Ritle Range and Bumpkin Island, Mass,, Naval School, he was transferred to sea duty and served in the North Atlantic during the months of July and August. 1918. On Sept. 9 he was recalled and sent to Pelbam Bay, N. Y., to finish his training as a cadet. On Dec. 2, 1918, just one year after he reported to the Great Lakes Station, he was commissioned ensign in the U. S. Navy, and in January, 1919, he was assigned to the U. S. SS. "West Apaum" for duty in foreign waters.


MeKay, Othe L. (94), son of Norvin G. and Rachel Eaton MeKay, was born in Tipton Co., Ind., April 23. 1879. He was graduated from high school and dental college Ile enlisted Sept. 8. 1917. while at Windfall, Ind., and was discharged July 15, 1919, at Camp Sherman, Ohio. Ile had been commissioned first lieutenant, dental corps, and assigned to the 113th En- gineers, Thirty-eighth Division. Camp Shelby, Miss. On April 19. 1918, he was advanced to captain, and in March, 1019, was promoted to major. Ile arrived in France Sept. 28, 1918. and left there June 12. 1919, attached to the headquarters of the Seventh Division. He served in the Army of Ocenpation from April 24 to May 29, 1919. His wife is June Holman MeKay.


MeKee, Jolin Dukes (10), son of John E. and Anna A. Dukes McKee, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 4. 1899. Ile graduated from high school in 19is, and enlisted in the S. A. T. C. at DePauw University, where he was in training from October to December, 1918.

MeKinney, Horace R., son of Will J. and Ida D. Graves MeKinney, was born at Bourbon, lud., Oct. 31, 1801. Ile graduated from high school. His wife is Lum P. Bennett Mckinney. On May 2, 1918, at Logansport, Ind., be enlisted in the U. S. Heavy Tank Corps and was sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio, and then io Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pa., where he was assigned to the 303rd Battalion. He landed in England Ang. 29, 1918. On Dec. 20. 1918, he arrived in New York from England and received his discharge Jan. G. 1910.


MeKinney, John.


Mckinney, William Cart (60), son of William Willard and Golding Mckinney, was born near Greentown, Ind., April 29, 1893. He enlisted in the army at Kokomo, Ind., Feb. 15. 1918, and began his military training at Camp Funston, Kansas: then he was sent to Camp Stanley, Texas. While in France, he was stationed at Montagne with Co. B, 323rd Field Signal Battalion. On May 24, 1919, he returned to the States after having been in service fifteen months

MeKnight, Jesse James, was born July 27, 1902. He served from June 26, 1918, to April 1. 1919. with Co. D. Fourteenth F. A. In October, 1919, be re-enlisted and was assigned to the Third Field Artillery, Camp Grant, Ill.


MeKorkle, William Donald (96), son of William D. and Musedora MeKorkle, was born in Kokomo. Ind., July 7, 1896. He graduated from high school in 1936. on May 14, 1918, he was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo .. and there ordered to Camp Hancock, Ga,, and attached to the Third Casual Co., First Provisional Regiment, O. T. C. In September, 1918, he went overseas with Co. A. Eighth Provisional Regiment, Ordnance Battalion Detachment from Watervliet Arsenal, N. Y. He returned to the States and was discharged in July, 1919.


MeLain, Albert L. McLean, John Il.


MeLeland, Herman A., son of Arthur and Youtha MeLeland of Russiaville, Ind., was born in Scircleville, Ind. He was educated in the high school at Richmond, Ind., and attended Indiana I'niversity. Ile enlisted in the army in February, 1918, and was sent to Fort Oglethrope, Ga .; and then to Camp Merritt, N. J. In September, 1918, while serving as a nurse in the embarkation hospital at Ellis Island, N. Y., he contracted influenza, which developed into pneumonia and caused his death. His body was returned to Russiaville for burial.


MeLeland, James Roy, entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., March 29, 1918. Ile was pro- moted to field sergeant of the Twelfth Co., Third Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky.

MeMahan, Olaf Archie (83), son of Arthur and Dortha Brattain McMahan, was born at El- wood, Ind., Dec. 17, 1896. He has a college education. His wife is Ella Maloney McMahan. On April 26. 1916, he voluteered at Muncie, Ind .. for duty on the Mexican Border and was at Llano Grande from July 15. 1916, to March 20. 1917. In the World War he was commissioned second lieutenant in the United States Army and served in the infantry. His home is now in Kokomo, Ind.


MeMullen, Lester F., was born at Idaville, Ind., March 2, 1887. On Jan. 9, 1918, he en- listed in the army at Fort Thomas, Ky .. where he was assigned to the Twenty-second Co., Sixth Platoon. Upon his arrival at Carruthers Field, Texas, he was placed in the 208th Aero Squadron. His discharge was issued at Camp Grant, III., Feb. 15. 1019.


MeMinn, James H., was born Sept. 19, 1895. lle enlisted at Fort Wayne, Ind., Sept. 19, 1917, and was discharged June 20, 1919.


McNally, Michael Thomas.


MeNeal, Raymond L. (43), son of Dr. George L. and Mrs. MeNeal, was born in Miami Co., Ind., Aug. 11, 1896. lle graduated from the Kokomo High School and was a student in the school of medicine at Indiana University when war was declared. Immediately he enlisted in the medical department of the army on April 11. 1917, and left Bloomington, Ind .. for Jeffer- sonville, Ind., where he was on duty until ordered to Camp Shelby, Miss. Finally on Oct. 4. 1918, he embarked from Camp Mills, L. I., for France. After the armistice he was stationed with the American Army at Ringsdorf, Germany, until placed on detached service at the University of Beaune, France. Ile was mustered ont of the army upon his return to the United States, May 5, 1919.


MeNeeley , Ross.


MeNew, Earl Fay (87), son of Jerry and Mary Jane McNew, was born Jan. 23, 1SS7. llis wife is Mabel Nunemaker McNew. When he entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., Sept. 2, 1918, he was sent to Camp Grant, Ill., and remained there two months. He was in England for one month working in a munition plant. His discharge was received at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., Jan. 17, 1919. Hle was a first class private.


MeNew, Floyd Gilbert (20), son of Jerry and Mary Jane McNew. was born in Tipton Co., Ind., Dec. 2, 1892. He came to Iloward County to live when he was twelve years of age. He could have secured exemption from military service on agricultural grounds, but when re- minded of this, he said, "I am no better than the other boys. It is my duty to answer my country's call." He hired another to take his place in the fields, and enlisted March 18, 1918. From Camp Greene, N. C., he went to France in May, and from July 11 nutil he was fatally wounded Sept. 28, 1918, he was on the firing line, and a participant in some of the most famous drives of the war, such as: The Second Battle of the Marne. Chateau Thierry, Soisson, Belleau Woods, St. Mihiel, Verdun, Hill No. 64 and the Argonne Forest, in which he lost his life. In March, 1919, the parents received word from the war department that their son had died Oct. 6, 1918, from wounds received in battle.


MeNew, Fred L., was in France with Co, E, 199th Infantry, Fourth Division.


MeNutt, Ebert Leroy (48), son of John HI. and Minnie A. MeNutt, was born Feb. 22, 1895, in Kokomo, Ind. He completed three and one-half years of high school work. When he en- tered the army Sept. 21, 1917. he was assigned to Bat. C. Twenty-first F. A., Camp Zachary Taylor. From Sept. 12 to Nov. 11, 1918, he saw active service in France in the Vosges Moun- taius and the St. Mihiel sector. After the armistice he was billeted at Berange, Germany, at- tached to the Fifth, or "Red Diamond," Division. He came home about August 1, 1919, after serving sixteen months overseas.


MeNutt, Harry Edison (91), son of John H. and Miunie A. MeNntt, was born in Kokomo, Ind., April 24, 1899. While in his senior year of high school he enlisted July 5. 1918, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He was ordered to Camp Joseph E. Johnston, Jackson- ville, Fla., and appointed military postal clerk. Hlo received his discharge Jan. 9, 1919.


MeReynolds, Clarence S. (68), son of W. H. and Viola MeReynolds, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 20, 1890. Ile is a high school graduate. On April 8, 1918, he entered the army at Bagley, Minn,, and was sent to the auto mechanical school. University of Cincinnati, C'inciu- nati, Ohio; then he was transferred to the field replacement depot, Camp Jackson, S. C .; Jater he received instruction at the artillery brigade training center, Fort Sill, Okla. He was there appointed motorcycle instructor, promoted to first class sergeant, and later he was placed in full charge of the school. Ile was mustered out of the army at Camp Dodge, Iowa, in March, 1919.

MeReynolds, Everett Raven (11), son of Charles R. and Mary Belle Henderson McRey- nolds, was born at Cassville, Ind., July 31, 1803. After graduating from high school in Ko- komo in 1913, he spent one year at Purdue University. On May 14, 1918, he was sworn in the Naval Auxiliary Reserve, but was not called to the service until Sept. 9. 1918. He was first af the detention camp. Co. No. 546 B. 954, Camp Luce; then he entered the deck officers' school at the Municipal Pier, Chicago, where he remained six weeks. He returned home soon after the armistice was signed.


MeReynolds, George M. (16), son of W. IL. and Viola MeReynolds, was born in March, IS97. He is a graduate of the Kokomo High School. When he entered the army Sept. 1, 1918. he was sent to Indianapolis to take an electrical course at the Arsenal Technical High School. Detachment No. 3. Upon the completion of this work he was transferred to the signal corps and attached to the Forty-second Co., Engineers, Fort Benjamin Ilarrison, which contingent was ready for overseas duty when the armistice was signed. He was discharged Dec. 15. 1918.


MeReynolds, Howard Nelson (+), son of Charles R. and Mary Belle Henderson MeReynolds, was born at Cassville, ind., Jan. 17, 1896. He attended school in Kokomo, Ind., the Starkey Seminary, N. Y., and Dehance College, Ohio. Ilis military training began in September, 1917, at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. He was appointed mounted orderly to Colonel Bundell. In April, 1915, he was transferred to Greenville, S. C., and soon after placed in the ordnance de- partment. In June he was sent from Camp Sevier to Camp Mills and embarked for France from there with the Thirtieth ( Wildcat) Division, largely made up of troops from the Caro- linas and Tennessee. Ile was in action with the 115th F. A. at Mt. Kemmel and the Meuse- Argonne region, both on the east and west banks of the Meuse. His division was decorated and highly praised by Goperal Haig. He returned to the States in March, 1919, and was dis- charged at Camp Zachary Taylor in April, 1919.


Me Reynolds, J. Wesley (39), son of J. R. and Rachel Pence MeReynolds, was born near Kokomo, Ind., April 23, 1804. After graduating from the Kokomo High School he attended Indiana University two years. On May 8, 1917, he enlisted in the army and was commissioned second lieutenant. Ile was stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor several months; he was also at Camp Shelby, Miss. While in France he was a member of the 308th Supply Train. His dis- charge was dated Oct. 1, 1919, at Camp Dodge, Iowa.


Me Vety, Lester O. (66), son of George and Ellen Webb McVety, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Jan. 14, 1890. Ile was in East Chicago, Ind., with Co. E, but completed his training at Camp Shelby, Miss,, and Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. As a member of Co. 4, 328th F. 1 .. Eighty- second Division, he went to France. He did not return home until June. 1919, and was dis- charged in July. Immediately after his return from overseas he married Gladys Johnson.


Mead, David, son of Selar (deceased) and Margaret E. Mead, was born in Kokomo, Ind., June 4, 1898. He graduated from high school in 1917 and was attending Purdue U'niversity when he entered the S. A. T. C. He was also at the O. T. C. at Fortress Monroe. Va., but he returned to Purdue when the armistice was signed and discharged there Dec. 19, 1918.


Mealey, Frederick.


Meatzie, Brittan (14), son of Nelson and Sitta Graham Meatzie, was born in Festus, Mo., July 13, 1897. IIe was married Jan. 5, 1018, to Pora M. Underwood. On Oct. 15. 19IS, he went to Rolling Prairie, Ind., with the members of the contingent who were indueted into the S. A. T. C. Ile was there five weeks and then transferred to the motor transport corps at Valparaiso and discharged there Dec. 21, 1918.


Meck. James Edgar (SD), son of George Edgar and Margaret O'Brien Meck, was born in Kokomo, Ind .. June 29, 1890. Ile graduated from the Kokomo High School in 1910; then he attended Purdue University one year and Ohio Wesleyan University one year. lle enlisted in the first O. T. C. at Fort Benjamin Harrison May 12, 1917, and was discharged July 3, 1918. because of underweight and a weak heart. Ile had been attached to the Ninth Co., Ninth Provisional Training Regiment.
