Newby, Thomas Floyd, son of Joshua and Luella A. Newby, was born in Monroe Tp .. How- ard Co., Ind. He graduated from high school in 1915 and from Imisiness college in 1916. Ile went with the volunteers on Nov. 11, 1918, as far as Indianapolis on their way to the camp in South Carolina. The armistice having been signed on the morning of their departure, the recruits were turned back and mustered out of the army, after serving one day.

Newlin. Engene Morris (43), youngest son of Dr. W. H. and Florence Haworth Newlin, was born in New London. Ind .. May 12. 1809. He graduated from high school in 1917, and on Oct. 1. 1918, went into military training in the S. A. T. C. at Indiana University. Ile was a mem- ber of Co. D, Barracks No. 17, until he received his discharge in December, 19IS.


Newlin, Harry Calvin (82), son of Henry O. and Anna C. Newlin, was born in Kokomo, Ind .. Feb. 7, 1893. Enlisting in the aviation section of the army at Kokomo, Ind., April 25, 1918, he was assigned to the Fifty-second Balloon Co .. Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas; June 8, 1918, he was transferred to the army balloon school, Arcadia, Flo. Hle received his dis- charge Jan. 24, 1919.

Newlin. Roy Clarkson (43), son of Dr. W. U. and Florence Daworth Newlin, was born in New London, Ind .. Oct. 3. 1893. After graduating from the New London High School, he at- tended Indiana University one year. On Sept. 7. 1918, he entered the limited service at Fort Benjamin Harrison and on Sept. 20 he was ordered to East Chicago, Ind., where he served under the supervision of the Adjutant-General of Indiana in the infantry, unassigned. Ile was discharged in December, 1918.

Newman ( Neumann), Robert Louis, was born June 15, 1900. He entered the army at Madi- son, Wis., and was attached to the personnel department. Ile was discharged from the S. A. T. C. of the University of Wisconsin Dec. 18, 1918.


Newman, Waldo Emerson (19), son of C. P. aud Elizabeth Grant Newman, was born at Greentown, Ind., July 26, 1960. When he completed the third year of high school he enlisted in the army at Kokomo, Ind., JJuly 26, 1918, and was assigned to the 111th Ordnance Depot Co., Camp Grant, Ill. lle was promoted to corporal April 3, 1919, and discharged April 18, 1919.

Newton, Omer Orestus (20), son of Samuel and Rosa Newton, was born in Hillishurg, Clinton Co., Ind., Dec. 17, 1804. He was sent to Camp Zachary Taylor in September, 1917, and served as cook until Jan. 1, 1919, when he was transferred to Camp Mills, L. I.


Newyear, Rudolph O., was born at Pleasant Prairie, Wis. Ile was a member of Co. E, 152nd Regiment, Camp Shelby, Miss. 11is discharge was issued Feb. 2, 1918.


Neyhart, Floyd B. (83), son of E. C. and Lou Blair Neyhart, was born at Kirklin, Ind., Oct. 6, 1894. Ile graduated from the high school at Greentown, Ind., with the class of 1913. Ou May 31, 1917, he enlisted in the army at Fort Wayne, Ind., and was sworn in at Fort Thomas, Ky. lle was on duty as follows: Troop I, Twentieth Cavalry, Fort Riley, Kansas; appointed mechanic: Bat. E, Seventy-eighth Provisional F. A., Camp Logan, Houston, Texas; transferred to Fort Sill, Okla .; entrained for Camp Mills, L. I .; sailed for France July 14, 1918. He was discharged from U. S. Regular Army July 9, 1919.


Nighthelser, Guy Harmon.


Niekell, Frank Ona, was born at Coloma, ind., March 16, 1896. His first assignment was with the Forty-second Motor Ambulance Corps at the time of his enlistment at Indian- apolis, Ind., Nov. 21, 1917. After training at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., he went to France in April, 1918, and returned in May, 1919. He was promoted from private to first class private and then to first class wagoner. fle was on the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne fronts. llis discharge was issued at Camp Sherman, Ohio, June 5, 1919.

Norris, Richard Daniel (18), son of Jesse A. and Almetta Gano Norris, was born at Mid- diefork, Ind. Ile graduated from the Young America High School in 1916, and after attending the Muncie National Institute, he taught two years in high school. On April 27, 1918, he married Ova Ridgeway. Ile entered the army Sept. 4, 1918, and was a member of the Fifth Battalion, Light F. A., Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. lle was mustered out of the army Dec. 9, 1918.


Norris, William E.


Norris, William R. (72), was born in Union Co., Tenn. He enlisted in the army at Ko- komo, Ind., in June, 1917, and went overseas with the 318th Ambulance Co., 305th Sanitary Train.


Norris, Rufus.


North, Aorel R., was one of the company sent in the last quota, Nov. 11, 1918. Although he was mustered out Nov. 12, 1918, he had the honor of serving one day in the army.


Norton, Harry O., was sent in the draft of Sept. 1, 1918, to Purdue University. He was transferred to the Tenth Casual Co., First Provisional Regiment. His home was in Chicago before coming to Kokomo, Ind.


Norton, Harry Otis (51), son of James Otis and Minnie B. Owens Norton, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Ang. 17, 1890. llis wife is Blanche Waldsmith Norton. Although he was mar- ried and perhaps coukt have been exempted from military service, he did not ask to be re- lieved from what he considered his duty; he came from fighting stoek, for on his mother's side, his grandfather, great-grandfather and five great-uncles bad served in the Civil War. After his enlistment, he was sent to Camp llancock, Ga., and there assigned to the Ninth Co., Third Detachment. His last assignment was with the Tenth Co., Third Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade, Camp Sherman, Ohio. Ilis discharge was given Jan. 26, 1919.

Nunemaker, William Henry (70, son of Joseph and Sarah Ann Holley Nunemaker, was born in Huntington Co., Ind .. Feb. 26, 1895. On July 21, 1917, he enlisted in Co. E at Kokomo, Ind. He was later attached to Co. E. 327th Infantry, Eighty-second Division.


Nunns. Charles Frederick (21), son of Charles and Mary Gertrude Nuuns, was born at Wesion. Staffordshire, England, April 19, 1808. He moved with his parents to Kokomo, Ind. On April 19, 1916, he enlisted in the Canadian Army at Windsor. Canada, and was assigned to the Ninety-ninth Windsor Battalion, called the pride of Essex County. In July, 1916, he ar- rived in England, and a few weeks later reached France. Nearly all of his regiment were either killed or wounded, and while he was not seriously hurt, he bears sears on his legs. which he says do not count. He was not permitted to enter the first line trenches until he was nineteen; then he was transferred to the Twentieth Canadian Battalion and was in the severe fighting on the western front. He returned to Kokomo in the summer of 1919.


Nutt, Leslie Edmond (63), son of Samuel N. (deceased) and Tillie Nutt, was born in Benton Co., Ind., Sept. 15, 1891. He entered the army at Kokomo. Ind., Sept. 21. 1917, and was at Camp Zachary Taylor until he was transferred to the aviation corps as a mechanic at Kelly Field. Texas. Corporal Nutt was also at Americus Field, Ga., as chief crew man on airplane motors. He was mustered out Feb. 4. 1919, at Southern Field, Ga.


Nutt. Ray Sanford (62), son of Samuel N. (leceased) and Tillie Nutt, was born in Benton Co., Ind., Feb. 16, 1894. He was in the second quota to go to Camp Zachary Taylor. From Sept. 21, 1917. until his transfer to Kelly Field, Texas, he was attached to the 325th F. A. Sergeant Nutt was transferred from Kelly Field to Camp MeArthur, Texas; and then to Camp Greene, Charlotte. N. C. After going to Middletown, Pa., he was promoted to top sergeant of his squadron.


Oakes, William.


Obenauer. Victor Jackson, son of Victor J. and Edwina Elizabeth Shaw Obenauer (both de- ceased), was born at Detroit, Mich., Dec. 31, 1896. He attended school at Dayton, Ohio, Indianapolis and Logansport before entering the University of Wisconsin. He had completed two and one- fourth years there when he enlisted in the air service at Chicago, Ill., Nov. 17. 1917. He was in training at the ground school, U. S. S. M. A., Urbana, IL .. Jan. 5 to March 2. 1918; Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas, March 9 to March 31. 1918: Ellington Field. Houston, Texas, March 31 to May 27, 1918; bombing course, June 1 to Ang. 31. 1918: Dow Field. Arcadia. Fla .. flying cadet and officer; commissioned second lieutenant R. M. A. A. S. A., Ang. 13, 191%; Brooks Field (fying instructors school), Sept. 1. to Oct. 1, 1918: Park Field, Memphis, Ten., flying instruc- tor and later commander, Oct. 1, 1918, to March 14, 1919; Carlstrom Field, Arcadia, Fla .. final test pilot and officer in charge of flying instructors training, March 20 to June 11. 1919. He was discharged in September. 1919.


Oden, Francis Osborne, son of Willard O. and Amyrillis mhlen, was born May 1. 1903. in Howard Co., Ind. He joined the navy at Kokomo May 27. 191%, and was sent to Camp Decatur, Great Lakes, III. On June 14. 1918, he was ordered to Camp Dewoy, and on June 18 went to Camp Ross. One week later he left for Hampton Roads, Va., and on July 5, 1918. went to Liverpool, England, on the U. S. SS. "lowa"; later he served on the U. S. SS. "New York." He received a discharge in July. 1919, and enlisted in the aviation section of the army at the Speedway, Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 21. 19I !.


Olenkirk, Kenneth Gaylen (70), son of Dr. Gaylen II. and Anna Powers Odenkirk, was born in Detroit, Mich. His wife is Enid D. Carter Odenkirk, He enlisted at Muncie, Ind., Feb. 12, 1918, and was instered in at Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Hle was first on duty at Camp Greenleaf, Chattanooga, Tem .; from March 1. 1918, to Jan. 16. 1919. he was in training at llattiesburg, Miss,, and there received his discharge as a first class private.


O'Donnell, Charles L, (9D), son of Neil and Mary O'Donnell, was born at Greenfield, Ind .. Nov. 13, 1884. He received an A.B. Degree from Notre Dame University and a Ph.D. Degree from the Catholic University of America. At the time of his enlistment for military service as a chaplain, he was editor of the Notre Dame Scholastic, and Professor of Literature at the university, as well as a poet of national reputation. Father O'Donnell has submitted the following military record: "Commissioned Feb. 1. 1918. Notre Dame, Ind. : sailed for over- seas Feb. 27, 1918: served as regimental chaplain with the 117th Engineers. April to June. 1918. Baccaret sector and the Marne; chaplain with 332nd Infantry, July. 1918, to April, 1919, in France, Italy, Austria and the United States. In battle of Vittorio. Veneito, Italy. Returned to the United States in April, 1919. Honorably discharged April 23, 1919: first lieutenant - chaplain."


O'Donnell, Robert, son of John and Kate Stewart O'Donnell, was born at Broad Ripple, Ind., March 12. 1891. In 1910 he graduated from the Carmel High School. Beginning April

26, 1918, he was for three weeks at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky .; then he was transferred to Bat. C. 136th F. A., Camp Sheridan, Ala. With this organization he went to France, where he served nine months, one month of which was on the firing line. lle came home in March, 1919, and was discharged at Camp Zachary Taylor, April 8. 1919.


Offutt, Claude Arnold, son of Demetrice and Maggie Offutt, was born in Elkton, Ky., Dee. 23, 1895. When he enlisted in the navy he was assigned to Co. I. Fifth Regiment, Camp Perry, Great Lakes, 111. At the time of bis discharge he was stationed on the U. S. SS. "Illinois," Navy Yards, Norfolk, Va.


O'Flaherty, A. E., enlisted in the medical corps of the army at Zanesville, Ohio, He was discharged April 5. 1919. Ile came to Kokomo, Ind., in August, 1919, after taking graduate work in Chicago, Ill.


Ogburn, Donald M. (70), son of W. L. and Ivan M. Saylors Ogborn, was born in Converse, Ind., Oct. 12. 1895. Ile was sent July 1, 1918, in the selective draft to Valparaiso, Ind .; then he was transferred to Fargo, N. D., and next to Camp Sherman, Ohio, where he was as- signed to the Fifth Co., Second Battalion, and promoted to corporal.


Ogden, George Thomas (75), son of Thomas A. (deceased) and Florence S. Seidell Ogden, was born April I, 1491, in Kokomo, Ind. He was in the Kokomo High School three years. "Tubby." as he was familiarly known, enlisted in the navy and was stationed at the Great . Lakes School. llowever. he was not to remain there long, for he soon became a member of the "Four Singing Sailors" quartette which toured the country with a naval band at the time of Red Cross and Liberty Loan drives. He was discharged Jan. 5, 1919.


O'Grady, Clyde R., was born Jan. 3. 1891. Ile was a second lieutenant in the 334th In- fantry. He enlisted at Indianapolis, Ind.


Oilar, Arthur L. (18), son of Martin L. and Rachel E. Oilar, was born in Kokomo, Ind., June 9, 1801. Ile graduated from the high school at Russiaville, Ind., in 1908, and from In- diana Medical College in 1913. In May, 1918, he was commissioned first lieutenant, medical corps, and on July 12, 1918, he reported for duty at Camp Ilaneock, Ga., and was assigned to Infirmary No. 703, C. M. G., O. T. S. He was discharged at Fort Ontario, Oswego, N. Y., Ang. 5, 1919.


Oilar, Harry Otis.


Oilar, Levi Harry (25), son of Henry C. (deceased) and Elizabeth Jones Oilar, was born in Russiaville, Ind., Oct. 6, 1895. In 1913 he graduated from the Russiaville High School and in 1917 he received his B. S. Degree from Purdue University. While a student in college be was a member of the university cadet corps and was advanced to first lieutenant and captain. After he was commissioned at the O. T. C. at Fort Benjamin Harrison, be reported for duty at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., Ang. 27. 1917, and until Jan. 1, 1918, he was a member of the Fifth Co., Second Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade; then he was appointed assistant instructor in the O. T. C. at Camp Zachary Taylor. Upon the completion of the school be was again on duty with his former company from April 20 to June 15. 1918; except for a short period when he was assigned to the Seventy-second Co., Eighteenth Battalion; he served as adjutant until Oct. 25, 1918; then he was commissioned first lieutenant, infantry, and appointed assistant camp personnel adjutant. Ile received his discharge Feb. 28, 1919.


Oldfield, Tipfon B. (94), was born in Kentucky June 17, 1895. He enlisted in the army June 13. 1917, and was placed in the coast artillery; on Aug. 1, 1917, he was transferred to Co. G, Forty-seventh Infantry, and one month later he was promoted from corporal to ser- geant. Ilis last assignment was with Co. B, Tenth Machine Gun Battalion. Ile received his training at Hull, Mass., Syracuse, N. Y., and Camp Mills, L. I. While in France he was wounded twice and his regiment was cited for bravery in Angust, 1918. After the armistice he went to Germany. Ile returned to Kokomo in August, 1918, after having served seventeen months overseas.


O'Maley, Elmer, Omhaker, Charles.


Orem, Julian Paul (26), son of James P. and Minnie F. Orem, was born in Vevay, Ind., Sept. 21, 1SOS. On April G. 1915, he enlisted at Indianapolis, Ind., and was sent to France with the Eighth Co., Fifth Regiment, Second Division, U. S. Marines. In April, 1919, he re- turned to America and was assigned to duty at Norfolk, Va The marines added to the glory of the American Forces a wonderful record of bravery and achievement.

in Kokomo, Ind. One month after he went to Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., he was ordered to Camp Sheridan, Ala .. and was transferred later to Camp Upton, L. I., June 27. 1918. There he entrained for Montreal, where on the following day he began his voyage on the St. Law- rence. Thirteen ships were in the convoy leaving Halifax, N. S., and they were escorted by the battleship "Devonshire." When the danger zone was reached they were met by several destroyers or little "speed demons." After his arrival at Camp de Songe, France, his regiment practiced on the big guns on the range until Sept. 23. 1918; then they left for the front lines, and on Oct. 17, 1918, he went into active service with Bat. D. 136th F. A. His discharge was issned at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., April 8, 1919.


Ormsby, Wilburt C. (69), son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ormsby, was born in White Co., Ind., Feb. 26, 1896. Ile enlisted in the hospital corps at Kokomo, Ind, June 1, 1918, and was as- signed to Co. B, Medical Dept. No. 429, M. S T., New York, N. Y.


Osborn, Bert A. (26), son of Solomon and Eliza Osborn, was born in Madison, Ky., Oct. 14, 1890. On Sept. 21, 1917, he was sent from Kokomo, Ind., to Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky. He was promoted to corporal and chief wagoner. Before going to France he had instruction on the range at West Point, Ky. After his arrival in France, he was assigned to the medical de- partment headquarters of the 306th F. A., Veterinary Cuit. In April. 1919, he was on duty at the American Remount Depot No. 7. Merignac Base Section No. 2. He returned to Kokomo in July, 1919, as a casual. He had been kicked by a mule, but the injuries did not prove to te permanent.


Ormsby, George Joseph (301, son of George E. and Bridget Smith Ormsby, was born in White Co., Ind., Dec. 10, 1890. He married May D. Hale. On Aug. 1, 1918, he entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., and was called to Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 15. 1918, where he took medical instruction for two months. While at Fort Wayne, Detroit, Mich., he was attached to the air service. His discharge was issued Jan. 28, 1919.


Osborn, Dewey (43).


Osborn, Floyd Everett (29), son of Algie L. and Mattie Armfield Osborn, was born in Greentown, Ind., March 17, 1891. On Oct. 3, 1917, at Los Angeles, Calif., he enlisted and was sent to Camp Lewis, Wash., for infantry training; two months later he was returned to Cali- fornia and assigned to the mobile ordnance section at Camp Kearney. For six months he remained with this branch of service; then he was transferred to the 372nd Bakery Co., and was ready to leave for France when the armistice was signed. As a first class private he was mustered out of the army Jan. 1, 1919.


Osborn, Frank R., was commissioned first lieutenant. During part of his service he was stationed at Camp like, Ark., with the General Remount Depot. Among other duties, he had charge of the shipment of mules from other states. lle was released from service in September, 1919.


Osborn, Fred, son of Mrs. Ella Osborn, received his military training at Camp Zachary Taylor and Camp Knox, Ky., beginning in September, 1917.


Osborn, Gurna R., son of Mrs. Sarah Osborn Ware, began his army training at the can- tonment at Lonisville, Ky., April 26, 1918.


Osborn, Virgil R., son of Jesse L. and Sarah J. Osborn, was born in Kokomo, Ind., Dec. 8, 1892. When he entered the army at Huntington, Ind., he was assigned to Bat. E, 139th F. A., Thirty-eighth Division, Camp U'pton, L. I.


Overholser, Charles A. (44), son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Overbolser, was born near Darwin, Ind., Oct. 31, 1894. He enlisted Dec. 2, 1917, at Kokomo, Ind., and was sent to Camp Shelby, Miss., where he was attached to Co. E, 152nd Infantry. He left New York for overseas service May 2, 1918, and landed in Brest, France, May 10, 1918. Within three weeks he was in the trenches, as he was sent with other replacement troops to the Twenty-sixth Division and as- signed to Co. B, 102nd Infantry. On July 28 at Chateau Thierry he was severely wounded and spent the next five weeks in a hospital at Nantes. Upon recovery he was ordered to a rest camp at Tours; then to Blois; and finally to Chaumont. As he was unfit for duty at the front he was sent to headquarters for light work. Before he went to the trenches, he wrote: "I could hike twenty miles with full pack and not mind it much, for I am as hard as a rock." At the Bellean Woods offensive he was burned with mustard gas and about half of his com- pany was sent to the hospital. Ile returned to the States late in June, 1919, and was sent to Camp Mills, N. Y., where he received nis discharge in Inly, 1919.


Overton, Earl IT., son of William and Susan Overton, was born near New Albany, Ind., Dec. 22, 1899. On April 26, 1918. he entered the army at Kokomo, Ind., and was assigned to

O'Toole, Joseph Francis (76), son of Thomas J. and Rose E. Kiefer O'Toole, was born near Kokomo, Jud .. Oct. 19, 1892. He graduated from the high school in Kokomo in 1912. On Sept. 23. 1917, he enlisted in the army and was mustered in at Fort Thomas, Ky., and then sent to Madison Barracks, N. Y. From Jan. 11, 1918, he was with the A. E. F. in France, at- tached to Supply Co. No. 306, 2. M. C. He was returned to the States and mustered out July 29, 1919.


O'Toole, Thomas Paul (6), son of Thomas I. and Rose Kiefer O'Toole, was born near Kokomo, Ind., March 24, 1895. Ile completed one year of high school. He volunteered Oct. 19, 1917, and was sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio, where he served his entire enlistment. One month after he began his military training he was transferred to the school for bakers and cooks and assigned to the adjutant general's department, detached from the Q. M. C. His discharge was dated July 14, 1919.


O'Toole, William Clement (60), son of Thomas J. and Rose Kiefer O'Toole, was born near Kokomo, Ind., Sept. 10, 1885. Ou Sept. 19, 1918, he was appointed army field clerk at Camp Sheridan, Ala. He served in the headquarters department of the adjutant-general until the camp was closed, March 27, 1919, when he was honorably discharged.


Owen, James P.


Owen, Ralph Cartright, son of Fred B. and Jennie E. Chalfant Owen, was born at Indi- anapolis, Ind., Sept. 1, 1895. Ile married Frances Jeannette Jackson of Kokomo, Ind. He en- listed in the aviation section of the army at Frankfort, Ind., and upon being mustered in at Fort Thomas, Ky., he was sent with a trainload of troops to Kelly Field, Texas. A special course of training in the welding school at Jersey City, N. J., was his next assignment, and upon its completion, he returned to Kelly Field and was promoted to erew chief of airplanes. The authorities next sent him to the Massachusetts School of Technology for four months of intensive training, after which he was commissioned second lieutenant and returned to Kelly Field, where he was placed in charge of the erecting and repair shop at Field No. 2; later, as officer in charge of instruction in the aero motor department, he was on duty at the air service mechanics school. On Jan. 23. 1919, he received his discharge and accepted a commis- sion in the Reserve Army.


Owens, Ralph J., was born in Howard Co., Ind. lle was twenty-one years of age when he entered the army at Camp Zachary Taylor. Ky. Ile received his discharge there Sept. 9. 1918, because of physical disability. Ile married Sigfried Duncan.


Owens, Roy, was born March 28, 1893. lle entered the army Sept. 19, 1918, at Indianapolis, Ind.


Ozenbaugh, Harry Burns, was born in Howard Co., Ind. On Nov. JI, 19IS, he was or- dered to Camp Wadsworth, S. C., but the signing of the armistice caused him to be returned home upon his arrival at Indianapolis, and he was mustered out of the army Nov. 12, 1918.


Packmayr, Frank L., was the son of Mrs. Helen L. Packmayr. of Kokomo, Ind. Although his home was in Kokomo, he entered the army June 5, 1917, at San Francisco, Calif. He went to France with the Headquarters Co., 302nd Infantry. Ile died from wounds Sept. 28, 19IS, but word was not received from the war department for several months. Ile left a wife. Mrs. Cora Gay Packmayr, and three small children.
